I too have questions about this, but not because I think he doesn't possess it, or is limited, but because he hasn't been in a lot of situations that demand creativity. And of course this aspect "football IQ" is really hard to measure. It's the biggest thing we "armchair GMs" don't have any data on - we don't get to interview them or see them up close. On this aspect I have to trust that Douglas knows how to measure this.

I too liked the AFL and all that it bought to the game. I also like how they gave HBSU players a chance. I also agree with the rest of your post about how the Jets did the exact opposite of where the NFL was going. The league has been geared to score with the rules changes. Here we have the Jets drafting defensive slugs at defensive tackle every year instead of playmakers. I hope Saleh and LeFleur see this and get some offense going on this team. I can't remember the last time the Jets had a decent offense.

I think I understood your argument quite well because you just re-worded what I told you your argument was to make it sound like less of a fool's errand. The problem with your response to me is assuming I'm pumping Wilson at the 2 like the rest of the people your are aiming your one-dimensional argument at. I'm not. I haven't really wholesale supported any of these drafted QBs, the idea of trading Watson or the idea of trading down. I think that if handled the correct way, any of those scenarios could work (minus the Watson thing which became a non-reality when he went from the Michael Jordan of the NFL to the Bill Cosby of the NFL), although the way things are setting up with FA it seems like the only way drafting any of these QBs at 2 would work is if they sat the QB while the O-line got some reps and synced up.

This team is not only overhauling the roster, they are installing new schemes everywhere but STs. That means there is going to be a mandatory period of adjustment while the offense especially gets their feet under them and learns how to play together. In the very unlikely scenario that Trevor Lawrence, everyone's hero of the draft, fell to the Jets at 2, I think he would also need to sit for at least half a season but probably more. I would think that rookie Andrew Luck and rookie Patrick Mahomes and rookie Drew Brees and rookie Tom Brady would need to sit also. And any of the other QBs you think should start. Because plugging any rookie QB, no matter the skill level, would be placed in position to fail with this offense as it stands.

Your argument only takes into account the perceived skill level of the QB and draft position to determine if they should start, which makes it one-dimensional and motive-driven. And therefore wrong.

My argument is not just skill - its draft value.

To me there is a big difference between sitting the first part of the season and sitting the entire season. Perhaps this is where our opinions diverge. If there is no training camp or preseason like last year I could be inclined to agree with you more. Which is why I think we both agree its just better to wait a year to build and have the time to gel before grabbing a QB.

I never thought you were a Wilson guy. Where I strongly disagree with your view is that taking a QB that has to sit a year is worthy of the 2nd pick, when we could take a QB with much less draft capital next season that would be ready by at least week 6. Or sooner.

Is there a strongly reputable report saying that? That’s not pure speculation?

If the Jets draft a QB at #2 or even in the top 10, they're not going to keep Sam regardless of how he plays this season (if he's still here). If they draft a QB in the top 10, they are making a commitment to him that he is the future.

I’m sure the 49ers are simultaneously exploring trade up options in the draft. Rap is usually pretty good but it’s not like he bats .100. I’ve noticed he’s been off on some rumors lately. In some ways he’s an insider but in others he’s a mouthpiece for certain GM’s and agents.

Maybe the 49ers really aren’t interested but we’ll see

It's possible. seems like the jets are holding onto to sam until they feel like there is a QB in the draft they want. Also seems like the niners might just want to draft one as well. 12 isn't bad to pick for a QB this year and they can move up
