Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it had anything to do with Babe Ruth. I'm just saying that people EXPECTED the Sox to lose, and in heartbreaking fashion. The idea that the Sox might never win again is what was passed on, not necessarily the Ruth thing.
That's perfectly said. And I resent Dan Shaughnessy collecting another royalty check every time someone utters the word "curse." It wasn't about mystical forces. It was about decades of mediocre drafting, poor management, and playing in the same division as a team that went the extra mile. Let's be honest, the Red Sox FIRST World Series in 86 years wouldn't have been possible prior to 1994. It's the same reason the Yankees were shut out in the 1980's - no division, no title. The wildcard changed the AL East more than any other division, I think. A long string of bad luck is fairly easy to achieve in this division.
