BTW: Anyone who watched the Chargers-Chiefs game last night had to be impressed with the Chargers going for 2 to win the game, rather than settling for OT. Does anyone here believe that Bowles would EVER do such a thing? If anyone answers yes to that, please refrain from driving or operating machinery until your drugs wear off. That play epitomizes why Bowles will never be a SB coach. He is so risk-averse, insurance companies seem like flagrant gamblers in comparison. Kudos to the Bolts for having the balls to try and win!
Looks like I can go operate heavy machinery. Exactly. But to be fair, the season is over so the risk of losing wasn’t that great. I’m skeptical that he would have done that if we were in playoff contention. But yeah, he literally just did it.
To put a finer point on it, in the Chargers case, they could've settled for a tie and gone into OT, and based upon Bowles history, I'm sure that's what he would've done. In the Jets game, there was no real option for him: there wasn't enough time - even in his world - to kick a FG and then count on getting the ball back and score a TD. I stand by my original contention.
now we are going into hypotheticals ... more than likely he does kick a FG there. There is always that small chance he goes for it.
I wonder what Bowles face and thought process was when the first person asked "why didn't you challenge the spot on Cannon's third down run?" I honestly feel like he had no idea until he was asked.
"I like egg-creams. Especially made with Fox U-Bet syrup." You're not alone, Todd. You're not alone. . .
I'm still flabbergasted that he didn't challenge that! And flabbergasted that he wasn't fired on the spot. The man HAS to go!
I went to college with Mr. Fox's grandson - he was able to supply us with all the U-Bet we wanted. He let us in on the secret of using the Kosher for Passover version all year round, since it was made using cane sugar rather than corn syrup.
This one annoyed me to no end. First I didn't know Rontez Miles was back. Bowles decided to start Roberts again FS, Where he's shown he's definitely NOT. He got beat on the Hopkins first TD and had a few more gaffes. Suddenly I saw more of Miles on the field, then voila, Miles finally returned to his normal spot instead of not being out there, or acting as a roving S/LB. The pass defense improved a bit with Miles there. Just not sure why this didn't happen for the whole game. And Roberts def needs to be back at corner and let Skrine sit on the bench.
To be fair, going for 2 isn't just a coin flip. It depends on how good you are at it. If the Chargers are >50% to convert, then it should be an easy decision, especially on the road against a good team. Bowles has NEVER had an offense with a >50% chance of converting a 2-pt. conversion. Which he (and Mac) must take responsibility for. But in the moment, if you only have a 30% of converting the 2 points, then it's an easy decision to kick and go to OT.
Maybe it's a matter of the more you try, the more you succeed. I believe that Bowles's risk-averse mentality leads to a lack of belief on the part of the players.
Right. Every decision should be seen through the lens of Expected Value, i.e.: what actually gives us the best chance to win the game. Sounds insanely obvious, but we still see coaches making errors in this area all the time, and it's almost always being too conservative. Punting on fourth and inches when leading by three points late, etc, etc.
