Dearth is on the roster as a long snapper anyway. We have some 2 TE sets that will be used regularly, so Pociask and Franks will both be backups.....prob with Pociask on the PS
Dearth isn't a TE anymore, he's a Long Snapper, and a very good one at that. I voted Baker and Franks. I think Keller is more WR then TE, but that's just me. Franks is almost a mandate, to keep Favre happy and in tune with the Jets playcalling, at least for now.
FiremanEd Dearth is only a special teams guy. He really shouldn't be counted among the TE's. In fact I'd encourage you to assume we have 3 special teams players on the roster: P, K and long snapper. That way Dearth doesn't confuse the TE discussion.
In theory I think Pociask is a better candidate for the roster spot than Franks. Pociask is younger, cheaper and was good as a blocking TE last season. And this summer he has shown much better hands. So I think he could be the #3 TE with no problem. Franks has shown unpredictable hands (numerous drops in camp) and has a reputation as a player in decline. However with Favre on board I think Franks has to stay, at least for 2008. Whether to translate the playbook for our new QB or to provide a familiar target in the red zone, Franks role takes on increased importance. So I think the smart thing to do is carry Baker, Keller, Franks and Pociask this year. That prepares the team in case Franks leaves after this year (as is generally expected). If Franks revives his career and looks really good, then Pociask can be released next off-season. If Pociask is dropped now I think it's mandatory to put Schable (UDFA from South Dakota) on the practice squad. The team has to have a young TE in development.
I didn't have the ability to be at my computer for the amount of time it took to put these up for the past week, and the Jets have made their cuts. It was pretty poor forethought on my part, but next year I'm sure I will organize this better.
You know what, that's not a bad idea. After I get hammered, both tonight and before/during tomorrow's demolition of Coastal Carolina I'll start this back up.
Fireman Ed: I saw every one of Bubba Franks games and no way is it 236 games, not even sure it was 136. No big deal just thought I would point it out.
