I know of one way that the Texans might deal with us. They're in the market for a RB. LT has already said that he wants to go try to win a ring. He might come here as a 3rd RB, freeing us up to trade Thomas Jones. It would be a very easy way for the Texans to get the back they want to pair with Slaton when they stand to lose Robinson either way.
^That would be a terrible deal for the Texans. Dunta Robinson for Thomas Jones? We better be tossing them more than a 31+year old HB coming off of injury concerns. Also, I don't see Tomlinson as anything better than Jones. If we're giving up Jones the replacement should be an improvement.
Two things: 1) Tomlinson is NOT better than Jones. However, he could still have enough left to serve as a 3DRB. I'd be more than comfortable letting Greene and Washington take over primary duties next season. 2) It's not a typical trade, and you can't think of it as Jones for Robinson. You're right, that would be terrible. As the article said, the Texans are about to let Robinson walk. This would allow the Texans to get SOMETHING for him, as opposed to the nothing they're currently resigned to getting. It would also allow Robinson to head to a Final 8 team, something currently closed to him. If I'm Tanny and I'm reading that news, I'm exploring that option with the Texans immediately.
Isn't there language in the final 8 rules to prevent exactly this type of thing? edit: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/02/15/final-eight-plan-limitations-apply-to-trades-too/
Ah. Yep, now I see it. I hadn't read past Section 6 as I assumed the remaining sections were simply definitions (as Section 6 is). Section 7, however, forbids a Final 8 team from trading for a player due to become a UFA. Oh well.
1) I was not saying Tomlinson is better than Jones. In fact, he's been injured far more often than Jones. A veteran price tag with worse health than the guy we are trying to let go is a terrible idea for a trade. 2) EDIT: NVM, you said it yourself.
