Is there any position more prone to injury and a shortened career than a RB? I hope Leon returns to form, if not everyone has to move on. TJ might have been pretty upset because he was advising LW against signing the deal on the table. Who knows? We can only wonder what went on behind the scenes.
yeah i always wonder what these guys are thinking not signing a contract when it is in the ballpark. was the extra million a year really gonna hurt leon's life? now in the unlikely event he doesn't get back to 100% he will never see that 5 million he was offered over the summer.
hindsight is 20/20... easy to judge from where the story is ending up, but if he had had a big year and stayed healthy he could have gotten big dollars... we'd all be saying how he's a greedy genius.
I disagree. Leon got an offer that was about as good as any #2 RB in the NFL ever got. Now... he's screwed, and has likely lost millions. Now, should we say he's a greedy idiot?
I saw the posts by Keels on another thread (assuming it was him, as it appears to be). No, I disagree....Leon was taking a big risk....why hold out, how much more money was he going to get ? Nobody gives big $$$ to scat-back running backs and KR's.....how much more money than the Jets were going to give him was he likely to get IF he had another career year and IF he didn't get hurt and IF the Jets didn't bury him on the depth chart if they or Sanchez struggled to a 6-10 year and IF another team needs a player like Leon and IF they have the cap room and IF they were willing to pay that much. That's alot of IFs !!!! Keels should have told Leon, assuming Leon was the one saying no the the contract, "Look, it's not a GREAT contract but it's a generally FAIR contract....you're getting 80-90% of the money you might eventually get, why hold out for a bit more ?" There WAS NO WAY that Leon was gonna get an extra 30-50% more than the Jets were offerering him......he isn't worth that much and I doubt another team would pay it IF they had the cap room. Well, maybe Snyder would.
I think he should have taken the deal myself, but that is the business. sometimes you choose to roll the dice and you don't always win. it's fair to call him a greedy idiot... sure.. lol I don't have any sympathy for him.
Leon has been relatively healthy, and he's not the every down back so when you think about it, maybe they didn't judge it as being as big a risk as we are all saying it is. Before he got hurt I wasn't hearing anyone harping about how big a risk he was taking every game. I would have liked to have seen him take the deal... seemed fair enough to me, but this is the business. Not everyone sees it the same way, and in a sport where careers are short as they are I can't fault someone for trying to get all they can out of their careers.
Keels is like Crabtree's agent, who fed his BS to Deon Sanders when there is no way anybody was paying him that kind of money. The tampering charges are BS. Like Tannenbaum would tell Parker that.
Does anyone remember the deal turned down by Washington? and why given the year that TJ is having, are people so quick to move him. That does not make any sense. When LW comes back we will have a nice three headed monster with TJ, Greene and LW. Who is the buyer that is the subject of the thread?
To bad, so sad. It's Leon's fault, ultimately its his decision. I hope he comes back and makes $ but if he doesn't its his problem. I work for IBM and worry about my job going to India every freaking day. Got not one second of pity for anyone, even players I love. Should taken the money, he overrated himself. How many TD's has he scored this year.
It's unfortunate that a season ending injury occurred. Washington's only leverage was that if he wasn't extended and had a good year and a CBA is worked out, he becomes a UFA. It was pretty good except the CBA piece, but he got injured. Regardless of whatever advice his agent gives him, he's still responsible for the decision. He's the boss.
I'm not entirely sure about that .... IF TJ keeps putting up decent numbers and end in the top 3 in the AFC, you might very well get someone to bite on a 3rd rounder ... He'd have back to back seasons in the top 3 in the AFC ... Also as hard as it is to believe, TJ has to most yds on the ground of ANY RB in the NFL except for Tomlinson over the past 5 years ( As per the announcers on last weeks game - They put up a graphic about it )
I wish Leon the best, but Keels and/or Leon dropped the ball on the deal. We had a rookie QB and no proven WRs outside of Cotchery at the beginning of the year. Defenses were going to focus on the run and Leon probably woudn't have a great year to get an extra 1-1.5 million per year. Even if he stayed healthy, I don't think he could do enough to earn the extra money.
Honestly can't blame the agent, was trying to get his player the best deal, injuries happen. Not like Leon has the biggest injury history ever
It wasn't worth it....this is the contract that sets Leon up for life.....he's making $500K per year and was about to get 10X that amount...you don't hold out to make it 12X......if Keels told him to take the deal or told him he was taking a big risk, then blame Leon. But from what I know about Keels, he's slimy enough to have told Leon he's worth more. Check out Keel's asinine analogy on another thread of an NFL player -- with an average career of 4 years -- to selling a house, which can last 50-100 years. The guy is clueless. Of course, if he has 20 NFL clients and one goes ker-blooey, thats a risk HE'S willing to take, as opposed to signing a contract that gives him a bad rep as an agent and hurts his recruiting at the next combine. You would NEVER EVER see Leigh Steinberg -- an agent I respect -- hold out or keep a player form signing over an extra 10-15%. He'd split the difference, hammer it out, or tell the player to sign. The only time Steinberg would hold out for that last dollar -- and he told me this personally years ago -- is when the player was already financially secure, usually going for his 3rd or 4th contract, and with 7-10 years of playing and earnings behind him. I never liked agents -- Rosenhaus is a real sleazebag -- but I admired Lee Steinberg. Not sure why he isn't active anymore (used to be THE QB agent), probably not willing to play the sleaze and games necessary to be an agent today.
