sleeper this year is houston. defense is coming togather, a decent running game, a decent qb and a legitmate threat at wr position.

Haha, death, taxes, Raiderjoe...Give credit where credit is due. He's always done exceptionally well for a chimp. In fact, he's brilliant. Since when can chimps type in quasi-sentences? Let's be real here.

Well we all know the Bucs are on the rise, drafting the best CB and QB in the draft.

What are you even talking about? When did I say anything of this? You're the one who praises every move the Raiders make year after year, and say how great the Raiders are going to be, and then they end up being terrible.

I at least wait until my team makes the playoffs before I say they might be decent. Year after year the Raiders are in the basement, and yet you still predict great things for them. Why can't you just wait and see what happens, so you don't look like such a fool?

Probably for the same reason he wears a bite ball and a leather mask while watching football on Sundays.

    Here is Hasty's take:

    Teams on the Rise

    1. Jets had a strong offseason in free agency and will have an easy schedule this year. Winning the AFC East might be a stretch but the wild card should be attainable. 4-12 won't be hard to beat either.

    2. Matt Leinhart had some growing pains but if Kurt Warner can stay healthy the Cardinals might just take the NFC West from the Seahawks. They managed to have a nice draft while keeping Dansby, Fitz, and Boldin on the roster.

    3. The Vikings pulled off a coup for their defense with Jared Allen. If they get anything out of the QB position this year they are looking at a serious playoff push. Without Farve to stand in their way the NFC North is theirs for the taking.

    4. The Eagles managed to keep Shepard and they get McNabb back as well. The NFC East may be the toughest division in the league with all four teams keeping most of their players and drafting well to boot. In a weak conference both wild card spots may go to the East.

    5. The Browns missed the playoffs by a very small margin. Looking to shore up their weak defense with not one but two stud DTs, the Browns are ready to make some noise this year. If they lose the dogfight to the Steelers, look for the Browns to take one of the wild card spots.

    Teams on the decline

    1. The Baltimore Ravens moved into position to take Flacco. With the untimely departure of McNair a week before the draft, they had little choice but to position themselves for thier second favorite QB in the draft. Reaching for a need is never the way to win in the draft. They used their other picks well but their stars are getting older. They will win their share of games but will fall further behind the Steelers and Browns.

    2. The Packers have a good young core of players but will need at least the better part of a year to sort out their QB situation. The Vikings and Bears will be happy to tee off on the winner of the QB derby.

    3. The Broncos got their left tackle in the draft but lost a pro bowl CB in the offseason. Denver's shaky defense has gotten worse while their division can only get tougher this year.

    4. The Patriots still have a ton of talent and are the favorite to win the AFC East but they have lost some serious talent and had a very weak draft as well. Crable was the only good value in their draft and Victor Hobson isn't scaring anyone. They are good enough to get away with one bad offseason but another one like this and the AFC East is up for grabs.

    5. Last year the Browns lost the numbers game in the AFC wild card race. This year the Titans won't even get that close. The AFC has gotten tougher and the Titans have not. With the loss of both starting guards and a weak draft the Titans still managed to miss out on a stid WR that their QB desparately needs. With the Colts and Jags in their division, the Titans will look to the wild card but the Patriots, Steelers, Jets, Browns, Colts, and Jaguars will be there to stop them.

Besides the obvious (Miami has to be better, New England has to be worse), I'll say Tennessee and Green Bay don't make the playoffs while Chicago and Baltimore continue to decline.

    In the East....

NY Jets - As much as in pains me to say it, I think the Jets had the best off-season this year. The FA additions you made were very solid, and should go a long way in making you better on both sides of the ball. If the QB position gets solved, I think the Jets make the playoffs....

Buffalo - The Bills are a team you can never underestimate, and they've improved quite a bit under coach Juaron these last couple of years. They still have questions at QB, but they are a physical group that always plays hard for 60 minutes. I think they'll be very tough in 2008 and beyond. The Bills are rising no doubt....

Miami - Nowhere to go but up, and now that Parcells is running the show, I expect a much more disciplined / focused / well prepared team. The playoffs are still a year or two away, but you can be sure that Miami will be a tough team to beat from now on....

The road to the playoffs for the Jets would see us with a better record than one of the following teams:

    New England
    Indianapolis
    Pittsburgh
    Jacksonville
    Cleveland

The Chargers are a playoff lock as they are in the AFC West which looks to be the weakest division this year. Assuming the Titans, Broncos, and Bills falter there are only two wild card spots for the losers of the three stronger divisions. All five of our rivals for an AFC playoff spot are very good.

The development of our younger players is more important than our playoff / SB aspirations this year but the Jets won't be a team that anyone on the playoff bubble wants to face.

    1. Jacksonville - If there is any team in the NFL that I love the way they are built, it is Jacksonville. Power and size - the Jags have more of that than any other team in the NFL. I see them as being the modern day Steelers, and this is the year where I believe they really shine. I see Jacksonville going 13-3 and making a deep push into the playoffs.
    2. Buffalo - Personally I loved the Bills draft and further, they're a team that has been on the brink of busting out in a big way. The team should be healthy this year (biggest injury woes in '07 of any team). I can see Buffalo as being the reason why the Jets don't make the playoffs this year and in the future. If anyone is going to challenge NE this year, it is them.
    3. Miami - Hate to say it, but Parcells is going to whip that organization right into shape. I don't think they're going to have the epic turn around that the Jets had from 1-15 to 9-7 because Parcells isn't actually coaching... but I can definitely see them going 7-9 this year, and being in the playoff hunt next year.
    4. Jets - I think the Jets have done enough to get back up into playoff contention, but I don't think it's going to be enough to actually get us in. Our QB and OL depth questions really have me concerned. I peg the Jets to go 9-7, still a huge improvement over last year.

    Fallers
    =====
    1. Oakland - will be the #1 overall pick in next year's draft. Rumor has it that submanagement in Oakland is looking into being the first team ever to use the #1 overall pick on an owner.
    2. Seattle - Seattle has teetered around 10-6 for a while but they just aren't getting any better. Combine this with the fact that Mike Holmgren's retirement is imminent, I can see this team falling apart and dropping to 6-10.
    3. Cincinnati - This is a team that needs a true house cleaning, and they will go from being bad to dismal this year. I have the Bungels pegged to be back in the top 5 picks this year.
    4. Chicago - A bad team that didn't fix it's problems. This situation is going to continue to deteriorate as Chicago falls to the bottom of the NFL.
    5. Patriots - If the Patriots lose three games this year, then they have fallen. Even though they have the easiest schedule EVER this year I still think teams will use the Giants blueprint and find ways to defeat the Patriots. I predict they go 13-3 this year.
    6. Giants - I don't see them taking a massive tumble but I think the NFC East is just too good to expect them to repeat. They are a quality team but the final stretch down the season was pure momentum. They are going to need to fight very hard to stay up top.

Well said from a Phins fan. I feel like in a few years the AFC East is going to be bar-none the most competitive division in football. Miami's personnel who were brought in this offseason show they're not clueless like they were last off-season, the Bills are due for a breakout year, and the Jets have been building a foundation that, while I think they may only be on the brink of the playoffs this year, they'll be contention for a very long time if the QB situation is solved this season or next offseason.

Oh, and up the irons! \m/
