So what are the rankings based on? Paper? Previous years performance? Offseason activities? No matter what way you look at it, we do not end up at 23. I would say in the upper half. I liked Pat Kirwan's articles, but these rankings are absolutely nuts. If he based it on paper, we were 9-7 team last year and added more than we lost. If he based it on previous years performance, he is then insane. If he based it on off season activities, again, we gained more than we lost. If he simply based it on how the QB situation is in a team, then I wouldn't mind our rankings, but what about Chicago's ranking? They got a probowl caliber QB, and they were 9-7. I would rank them somewhere in the top ten. And I certainly wouldn't rank the Pats at #2 after Brady's knee surgeries. I don't really give a shit about the rankings. we were ranked at 29 and 28 last yr., even after all those acquisitions. We played aweful the yr before I understandably agreed with the rankings until the new additions showed something to the table. But the same thing can be said this yr. We had a winning record, added a few key players as starters, and lost a bunch of backups with the exception of Favre and Coles. Stuckey and Clowney will be better since they have more time under their belt. Same for KC as its another offseason. I expect us to match our win totals from last year. I mean we had debates of who's a better QB, KC or Chad, when KC was in his second yr. It will now be his 4th yr. KC won't be Brees I believe, but he will be good enough to be a starter in the NFL, maybe not on this team.
I see the Jets as a 16 and 0 kind of team dominating on both sides of the ball. It's possible that some idiots look at the last 5 games of the season when we went 1 and 4averaged 16.4 and gave up 24.4 and concluded we weren't very good. Real Jets fans know the end of last season was a statistical anomaly that only happens 1 out of every 14 billion seasons? It's also possible that these dopes don't realize how much better we are with our off season moves and how much more the rest of the league fell behind in the off season? Many of these same experts don't realize that Clemen's knows Shotty's Offense cold and Shotty's offense when managed by someone who actually knows it will dominate the league. They also don't know if Sanchez actually beats out Clemens in TC wow the Jets are going to kill people because now we aren't just running Shotty's O as it was designed to be run but we are running Shotty's O with a dynamic QB who can not just kill people with Shotty's O but with his own improvisation. They also don't know that since Rex became HC, Gholston has been put on a strict diet of Wheeties for breakfast. Everyone knows that Wheeties is the breakfast of champions. After 43 years of Jets football I have heard all the nay sayer professionals proved wrong over and over again. Underestimate the Jets at your own peril. Nuff said. Jets R #1.
I don't know why anyone takes these rankings seriously. Look at any preseason rankings from last year and I am sure you will find 5 of the 10 top teams did not even make the playoffs and 3 or 4 of the bottom 10 did. In fact you will probably find Arizona in many of the bottom 10.
Rankings are way over valued on this board. They mean nothing. Especially in May. No need to even get remotely upset about it.
Seems to me rankings have value if there is good reasoning behind them. I think most of the reasoning behind the low ranking concerns the offense. Most here vividly remember Favre not playing well as the season wound down. But neither did the rest of the team. I think that is partly behind the low assessment. Favre also played well in the middle of the season. Arguably better than we will see from either Clemens or Sanchez. I sure hope not, but it remains to be seen that they can and will at least play up to Favre's level of play mid season. Without doing so, replicating last year's overall record will not happen. The O was fairly good at the starting position, but imo has below average bench strength. The OL went the entire season without a major injury. One starter goes out, who replaces him? We all hope things settle down with the RB's, but right now there's a certain up in the air aspect to the roster. TE is definitely weaker than last year. I personally don't think by all that much, but it is hardly improved. Keller is another one who played quite well in the middle of last season. Toward the end? Not so much. You can say that is Favre's fault, but perhaps so was the mid season play to Favre's credit? No one really knows at this point. Wideout. Ugly. It's the most important reason the prognosticators do not think the Jets rate out that highly. I think we will see the D improved, particularly the interior. But it remains to be seen who starts at DE opposite Ellis, whether the Jets can pass rush any better, and whether #2 CB will really be filled by Shepard and Lowery. I personally don't expect miracles overnight.
The 9-7 team no longer has it's highly respected and aging QB at the helm and went 1-4 down the stretch which would have been 0-5 without a major brainfart by the Bills. I think Sanchez is going to be a great QB and we're well above 23rd in the league, probably more like 13th, but I understand perfectly where that 23 rating comes from.
I believe these rankings are the final straw. The Jets are done. Don't even bother showing up Jet fans, it is over.
Seahawks have the return of a proven leader in Hasselbeck, the acquisition of TJ, the draft of Curry(a solid LB right away) Bengals have a really favorable schedule, the return of Palmer, Mauluaga,Andre Smith Jaguars shouldn't be better than the Jets...idk what the logic is here... Packers had the best draft imo...getting Raji and Clay Matthews...they will compete for the NFC North title As far as the Redskins...their defense should be top 5 with the acquisitions of Haynesworth and Orakpo so i can see some of those teams being better, but why speculate?
9-7 or 8-8 sounds about right for these Ny Jets. To many question Marks. All it takes is one of our Offensive linemen or Chris Jenkins to go down and we will be a top five team in the draft. Hopefully there is a Rex Ryan factor in place that can pull a game or two out of his hat.
And so begins the inevitable procession of offseason power ranking threads and cries of 'No Respect'. It never fails. The only teams that ever get any respect in the power rankings are the ones that win.
Bingo, well said. That's my same reasoning for why I think Sanchez's GQ photo shoot wasn't smart. Don't seek out the expectations and high profile until you're sure you can meet them.
So turn down marketing opportunities and more money? These guys have to think about their money as well.
Expectations are lame. I don't care what we rank, as long as this CS can turn this team into a dominating team, that is all I want. Make something out of VG as a bonus, throw some sugar on it, and call it a day.
Winning is a crutch. Real powerhouses can move up the rankings based solely on how their fans feel about them.
From the article: The Dolphins could be ranked higher if they stick with Chad Pennington this season. Anyone else how far we could have gone if we stuck with Chad, instead of trying to sell PSL's?
Even when Chad was healthy, I don't think we were ever ranked as high as the Dolphins are right now. Although I like our chances better than Dolphins this yr.
