"Rex Ryan will remain the Head Coach of our football team. I believe that he has the passion, the talent, and the drive to successfully lead our team."

    Direct quote from Woody.

I know a lot of people have said if a new GM comes in it will be the end of Rex but that doesn't ALWAYS happen and that has been argued several times the last couple weeks.

Rex staying is a good thing and I truly believe Rex will be the man for this job for years to come.

I think that is Woody's statement, so unless he backs out of that statement, Rex is going to be here

Yes, it is confirmed. It is being reported by all of the NY Jets beat writers:

    Conor Orr
Mike Tannenbaum fired as #Jets general manager. Rex Ryan will remain head coach

    Manish Mehta
Jets have announced that GM Mike Tannenbaum has been fired. #nyj

    Brian Costello
Rex Ryan is staying as head coach, Johnson also announced

Does anyone know if Bradway and Cavanaugh are gone too?

Head coach is irrelevant next season. 2014 is what counts. If Rex didn't have 6 mil coming to him then his fat ass would be out the door with Tannenbaum.

You don't know this. The new GM may be given Rex for a yr (and if they don't make the playoffs, then the GM can fire him). Pretty sure Holmgren did something similar.

    No,......you are.
By keeping Rex, we just narrowed the prospective GM pool to about 2 guys who said, "yeah, sure.......I'd have no problem working with the most polarizing coach in the NFL who makes the most questionable game day roster moves."

OH please, no other coach would have got more production out of this roster than Rex did. He got the absolute most out of the talent he had on this team and that talent was horrendous to begine with, even before the big injuries.

Rex is a great coach and he is somebody that can get us to where we want to be, which is champions. I haven't felt this strongly about a HC in a very long time and to throw that away already would be a mistake.

I'm glad that he is staying and it will be a great thing as long as we are getting the talent needed to stay competitive we will consistently be contenders with Rex as HC. Continuity is key and I think Johnson finally realizes that and wants to build on that.

I applaud him for this decision.

Hobbes, you need to change your routine. The non-stop personal attacks are getting stale. Hopefully you get laid tonight and come back a new man in 2013. :)

What a lot of you need to realize is that you all already have pre-determined that Rex is a bad HC. You view him in a certain light, but not everyone feels the same as you. A lot of fans can see that Rex is a great HC and someone that deserves to be here and can do some really good things for this team.

Other canidates will see that Rex was not the problem the last couple years, sure he has made some mistakes but nothing that hindered this team in the long term. There will be top canidates willing to take on Rex because they will see that he is a great coach and a guy that has brought the very best out of some really crappy talent. A guy that has gotten this team to two straight AFC title games with an average at best offense and good defense.

It's not as bad as you seem to believe. Not everyone shares your views.

Well maybe if his GM gave him a competing NFL roster he wouldn't have to make so many game day decisions.

Rex Ryan has officially become a lame duck head coach. This has all the makings of the standard "1 year leash" -- similar to Mangini.
So lets just torture ourselves for another full year watching someone make rookie mistakes in his 5th year of coaching on game day roster actives, replay challenges and zero 2nd half adjustments.

    Only the Jets.

He might be a great coach but he sure as hell isn't a great head coach. At least not yet. I want him canned because of the way he handled his head coaching duties, not how he handled the defense. Don't you think there is a HUGE difference between the two??

There is no money next season to buy Rex talent. 2013 is irrelevant until we clear the cap space. 2014 is what counts.

Dressing Tim Tebow and not dressing Greg McElroy when you are still in the playoff hunt vs Tennessee is 1 of the many that come to my mind to show how Rex has no idea how to be a head coach.

    Did you watch any games?
