To get rid of Rex. I don't think the draft had anything to do with it. I think Idzik wanted to be able to go into Woody's office and say "Well, we gave it two years with Rex, just like you wanted ... and he hasn't been able to accomplish anything with the roster we gave him." What Idzik didn't realize was that the NY media was going to bash Idzik over the head with the fact that the roster (and pretty much all the personnel moves Idzik made) was terrible. And the media destroyed him. And Woody, who doesn't know anything about football, is overly swayed by conventional wisdom and "buzz"; thankfully, this time, conventional wisdom was actually right.
I agree. I find it hard to believe he had a serious "vision" for the future. Besides signing third tier players to contracts and believing Dimitri Patterson had a future. Guy had no clue how to evaluate players or how to draft.
yeah but failing to replace someone is very different to telling the team to go out and deliberately suck.
Contrary to popular believe, "tanking" is not "telling the team to go out and deliberately suck" ... that never happens and will never happen simply because players have no incentive to play poorly intentionally. Their next paycheck is determined by their level of play; they are not going to sabotage their next paycheck. "Tanking" is deliberately causing your team to "suck" - to lose games. And what Idzik did (imho) was deliberately cause his team to suck.
