If Winston becomes the next Big Ben and Mariota becomes the next Rogers who gives a fuck if they aren't the next Luck. It's the ultimate red herring, if said propsect isn't Andrew Luck then you can't draft him top 10? So stupid. Hey, Tom Brady was a 6th rounder, no need to draft a QB in round 1!! _
In week 17, the Bucs benched their starters in the second half and they were up in that game by double digits. Doesn't that qualify as "tanking"?
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ers-tank-to-secure-top-pick-in-2015-nfl-draft I'm suprised more wasn't made out of this story, the Bucs were up by thirteen and benched their two best Wide Receivers , along with their All pro linebacker. I don't believe players tank, but I do believe that, front offices/some coaches have tanked in the past and the Bucs are just an example of this
'"Yeah, I'm Kevin Costner. Wanna come to my basement dive/den of iniquity?" "Really?, okay!" Hahahaha
Yes that's tanking. Like I said in your quoted reply the players and coaches will never do it. GM/Owner is different especially when the HC is not on the hot seat. Also, one half is not half the season. When we were eliminated most fans included myself began to cheer for tank. #SuckForTheDuck was pretty popular but players and coaches continued to play for their jobs.
You're quoting a movie, it's not real and it wasn't anything close to what happens on the day of the draft. Those trades were so full of shit it was unwatchable. I'm glad I saw it for free and not in the movies and waste my money. You're so wrong. Tanking doesn't guarantee your team is going to get a franchise player. Consistent solid mgmt and coaching builds a winning team, not throwing the towel for an unknown commodity.
imagine a scenario where the knicks and sixers were playing the final game of the season, winner get okafor. Pretty good draw for an otherwise horrible game between two bad teams
You're right, I seriously doubt a team will ever throw half a season away, but I just wanted to point out that teams have indeed tanked in the past. Tanking in the NFL is no where near as bad as it is in the NBA or NHL and it doesn't happen every year, but I'm sure there are more examples of teams (such as the Bucs)" that threw away a game away in week 17 or week 16 to secure a higher pick.
I'm not saying that under no circumstance do you take either one of these QBs but this thread brought up tanking for one of them. There was a reason why no team did.
No one has ever rightly suggested tanking "guarantees" you anything. Even having the first pick of any particular draft doesn't guarantees you a franchise player. But having a higher draft pick guarantees that you have a better chance of picking the player you would prefer to have and not have to chose what is left over. In round one and every round thereafter. It provides more options for picking players you want or giving you better ammo for trading up or down. That's guaranteed. You're a Jet fan. Consistent solid management and coaching has been a foreign concept to this franchise for decades. Suggesting that our solid management and coaching is more important than higher draft picks in every round is a bit idealistic. _
It wasn't THAT bad. It wasn't good. Movie fans totally overrate how bad Ishtar was. The Kenny Obrien of bad films.
I'm not so sure. They played a lot of games close late in the season. Just didn't have the talent. And as much as I think he's an overrated coach I'm pretty sure Lovie Smith wouldn't be on board with his team tanking.
I've never been for tanking until this past season when I knew the Rex era was def over.I wanted to tank to insure Idzik got fired with Rex .Only a guy like Luck or Manning can change the franchise "one player" isn't gonna solve our problems unless its someone like them.Tanking for a linemen or someone like that is pointless.
Don't you know that great players can be found all through the draft and that the 29th pick in the 6th round is just as valuable as the 6th pick in the first? At least that's what some Jets fans think. [Sarcasm off]
6th pick? 16th pick? 36th pick? Who cares you can get good players all over the draft. That's why trading up doesn't cost anything and you don't receive anything for trading down. Hell, if all of our picks were in the 6th round we COULD get all really good players. Tom Brady! Proof!! _
I was actually at that game. It seemed more like NO was tanking on purpose to screw a divisional rival out of the top draft pick. Brees was picked off once inside the 30, then twice at or near the goal line. We were all wondering why the hell would Tampa intercept him: they were jeopardizing their #1 pick. Had they swatted the balls to the ground, then it would have looked like tanking. Sure, TB laid down in the 4th, but if their opponent wasn't going to compete for 3 quarters, who blames them. It was a full house on the final day of the season for the last place team, and everyone wanted a win.
