In a moment of boredom I had a look to see who has been the winningest coaches for the Jets (in terms of average wins over their career) over the last 40 years - in order: 1. Bill Parcells 2. Al Groh 3. Herm Edwards 4. Rex Ryan 4. Eric Mangini 6. Joe Walton 7. Bruce Coslet 7. Walt Michaels 9. Todd Bowles (assuming a 5-11 finish) 10. Rich Kotite
This post needs to be stickied and then mailed to One Jets Drive. Now can we do the same thing for GMs?
Yeah, me either. I have heard that too though. Makes me think the Jets could trade back if they pick at #3. Good post. Yeah, makes sense to me.
So our ceiling is an unlikely 1 But what’s our floor? 6? I can’t do the math. I’m too dumb. Thanks for info
Lower than that. Say the Jets win their last two games. Then they're 6-10. Also: Arizona and Oakland do anything; they can't get past 5 wins no matter what. SF loses at least one of games against Chicago and Rams; they're 4-12 or 5-11. Jacksonville loses at least one of games against Miami and Houston; they're 4-12 or 5-11. Atlanta loses to Carolina, beats Tampa Bay; they're 6-10, but (at least now) have a weaker SOS than the Jets. Detroit loses to both Minnesota and Green Bay; they're 5-11. Tampa Bay loses to both Dallas and Atlanta; they're 5-11. Giants lose to both Indianapolis and Dallas; they're 5-11. Buffalo loses to both New England and Miami; they're 5-11. The Jets then pick 9th or 10th, depending on the SOS with Atlanta.
I'd be shocked if Bosa fell to us, if there was some QB talent, it could have been possible but there's not much there. The Jets absolutely need to upgrade the O line and skill positions, but you absolutely can't pass on Bosa if he's there.
This is looking like a draft where the Jets would be better off picking 8-10 than 3-5. At 3-5 we are looking at an edge rusher or DT type being by far best available. I know we desperately need an edge rusher but I do think that can be filled in FA. Do we really want to draft a DT... again? The 8-10 range opens up more possibilities like Jonah Williams or Greg Little or one of the WRs that we desperately need. We really need to draft offense early and often and this is the range to do it. As far as the trade down possibility, this doesn’t seem like a draft that will have too many teams if any at all clamoring to pay the price to get into top 5 but maybe some team would be willing to pay less to get into top 10. I know it sounds crazy but if you really think about it, it makes sense. Let’s go Jets!
It won't hurt to have 2 EDGE rushers. I would target Lawrence at all costs and if there's another EDGE rusher where we are positioned, pull the trigger. Chances are that EDGE rusher taken in the draft won't be offering substantial production for a year or two anyway.
Bosa seems like a lock to go #1 overall unless a QB prospect really destroys the combine and process and someone like the Giants trades up.
Btw, look at how the Colts have turned around in virtually 1 year. Luck has been getting killed for years. They hit gold when they drafted Quentin Nelson and Braden Smith (with our pick) and Ryan Kelly was playing really really well before he got hurt. Luck is remaining upright and playing some of his best football. Lowest sack rate in the NFL. Fix the line and this will be a different team.
You understand that drafting a guard or a tackle early does not insure success. Ereck Flowers went to the Giants at 9 and he was thought of as somewhat of a reach but still a really good prospect. He failed miserably. https://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2015/05/nfl_draft_2015_heres_how_the_giants_ereck_flowers.html
I hear you but why wait until 3rd day to pick OL regularly past 4 years? Wait, are you defending Macc? Lol.
That's his philosophy. Mid-round linemen picks are what he considers the best value in the draft. He is constantly drafting on what he perceives as "value". I made a detailed post couple months back about why this logic is flawed. Let me see if I can find it.
There seems to be a consensus on this board that Mac " ignored " the OL. He was quoted a couple of years ago saying good OL talent can be found in lower rounds or something like that. A lot of folks took that as him saying he would never select an OL with a high pick. That's not what he was saying. I remember him trying to trade up for Larry Tunsil and I tend to agree with your thought process - there have not been many OL prospects worthy of a top selection the last few years. And that has been what has contributed to the decay of the Jets OL ( among other teams ). That and the fact that a lot of teams recognize the importance of the position - say LT and lock up their pending FAs before they can test the FA waters....Mac has put the OL together as kind of a patchwork setup until he can address it more permanently as in actual higher draft picks. I think that is coming this offseason.. Now that the Jets have finally found their franchise QB ( or so we hope ) I think OL is going to be a top priority. The Colts were able to fix their line in an offseason I hope the Jets can do the same...
Making moves that don't work out is not ignoring something. He tried to fix it. Got the best FA tackle in Beachum that year and hit on Shell in the draft, then brought in multiple centers after center became the biggest weakness on the team. It's not easy.
