The offense looked ok. If you look at the stats we should have blown OAK out of the water. 19 Pts will not beat better teams. Missed TD catch, fumble on the 4, getting sacked out of FG range... The offense looked better than last year, but still needs to improve!
Geno just has to sharpen up his game and cut down on the little things. Obviously not taking huge sacks and not fumbling balls inside the 5 yard line. Other than that I like the way he's progressing. These next couple weeks are going to be big tests but I think Geno is going to be a player in this league.
Also, I can't say enough about the performance of our D, particularly the secondary. Walls, Allen, and even Wilson deserve a lot of credit. I know it was against a rookie QB with not a ton of talent around him but those guys took a lot of heat all preseason and all 3 stepped up. Pryor and Landry played great as well.
Week 1 is alway sloppy. I anticipate game 2 we will see a much more disciplined Jets team. 19 points wasnt great, but the Salas drop and the Geno fumble on the 1 wont happen every week. Thats an extra 14 right there. I'm feeling pretty good about the Jets right now. The fumble hurt, but if Geno can throw at an 80% clip every game, that would be awesome.
Geno's 19 yard loss on the sack we really painful but I have a hard time pinning the whole thing on Geno. There were Raiders in his face about the time he caught the snap. He needed to throw the ball away the instant he caught it. The instant he spun to avoid/evade it was over. He had zero chance to throw it away after that. If it was an outside rush he could of evaded by stepping up then it would have been a lot worse on Geno. But this was a jail break in his face that required an instant decision to bail on the play. Which he should have, and probably will next time.
Strongly agree. While our expectations are high, getting more on such short notice isn't reasonable. Happy with how the corners performed, as well as the D as a whole. They'll certainly be tested this upcoming Sunday. Hope that they're ready to answer the call.
How about the ref #4? He was the one callin the penalty's like the offensive PA on decker I think? No way was that PA . The Wr barely breaked off the line ? Only teams like the steelers only get a 15 yd unnecessary roughness call while jumpkicking the other teams punter. I seen at least 3 holding penaltys that were not called in the Pitt game.
WOW look around the league yesterday and count how many veteran QB's throw more then one pick and were saying Geno has to learn from a GREAT play from their Defense. I think Geno played one HELL of a game and he was night and day ahead of what he was last year. REX double the damn push up and cut down the penalties and we will be just fine. PLUS did anyone see the Hawks shred the Packers Defense running the ball. I think we are catching GB are the right time. Granted its an away game but HEY look what the Bills just did in Chicago.
Great QB's throws picks all the time. But more times than not they are productive. If Geno leads scoring drives and is sharp then that's fine.
I'm still trying to figure out how we ran up over 400yds total offense but only 19pts against one of the worst teams in the league. Mindboggling to say the least. Stats certainly are deceiving in this case.
Passing the ball on first and second down when you are on the opponents 5 yard line will explain that.
That's the best time to spread it out and pass it. They are expecting the run there. You have a short field there, it makes no sense to bunch it up even more and run the ball you are hurting yourself. By spreading it out and passing you aren't making yourself one dimensional. Green Bay and NE kill people with the pass in that situation. Look at the Johnson TD. Brilliant pass playcall at the opponents 5 yard line. Why you choose to ignore that?
Chris Ivory is one of the most violent runners in the league.. He excels in goal line situations.. Why risk a fumble by Geno (which happened), an interception, etc..... Pound the rock 3 downs in a row and we get in every time.
except he doesn't really excel in goal line situations.. which is why they had to use their defensive lineman last year to pound the ball in the end zone. It's not completely Ivory's fault. The play in general is stupid. Why bunch yourself up and run it in obvious running situations? It isn't about skillsets so much as playing the odds. Look at that Kelly in Philly. They run the ball up and down the field. Extremely effective running game they have. When they get in short yardage or the red zone they throw it in.. why? because it makes more sense. Also, about the only thing Geno Smith could do right all of last season was drop back to pass and tuck the ball and run for the end zone. Makes sense to want to play to your strengths.
I think Smith is durable, which is to his credit, but he's got to cut down on putting his body at risk. No one can afford to take too many chances before your luck runs out. As for other takeaways... Allen was imo the player of the game. He continues to impress, and while he was only up against the Raiders, he made the plays asked of him. still as I said on his thread I hope they can return him to safety when the roster allows. Coples probably still needs to show us he's really improved his pass rushing skills, but that tackle of Jones-Drew was imo the defensive play of the game. The offensive play was Ivory's run, and it ended up being the game winner. Also great runs by Johnson. Decker was also impressive, as expected, as was Kerley. But I have been down on Cumberland, and must admit he looked pretty decent yesterday. The OL committed too many penalties, but mostly kept Smith's suit clean. Winters got called once, but he looked pretty good. Thank God. As someone who really wanted the jets to hold onto Salas, I was very disappointed he could not haul that ball in there. But it was not an easy catch. Smith played within the game plan, with a couple of muffed plays and two turnovers. Still he's looking better than last year, and I hope I will be shown to be wrong about him. Overall there were too many penalties and missed opportunities. Against a better team taht performance would have ended in a loss. Happy to win, seeing some positives, but still apprehensive about the upcoming stretch. At least Rex did not sugarcoat what was a somewhat concerning way to win a game.
I think the best takeaway from this game was how furious Rex was in his postgame presser at the penalties and turnovers, haven't seen him that annoyed in a while, even the postgame locker room speech he brought up the penalties to everyone, I hope the team got that message loud and clear.
