I'd be happy with any of Winston, Mariota, Cooper, White or Fowler. I really want one of the QBs but think that is extremely unlikely at this point. Anyone else at 6 is a huge disappointment.
Ray's the kinda guy the Steelers move up for and he's a 15 sack man. But maybe not at 6 The need for a sack artist is up there behind the need for a QB and maybe it's elevating guys like Beasly and Ray, with the media anyway. Gregory and Fowler are prolly the more rounded edge guys. It's a tough call on who's gonna be that elite sack guy tho. I like Ray more than Beasly. I hope they get a QB out of that pick myself, and am thinking Cooper or White are the safer pick over the Edge Defender. Who knows?
I don't think shocked is the right word, it's not a huge reach for him at 6th. The question is whether or not people will be happy.
I disagree. I think it would be a fairly big reach. I wouldn't be happy at all, at least not initially.
Well it depends on who is available and if we have the opportunity to trade down or not. Don't get me wrong: I don't want to draft Ray, I just don't think it's a huge reach for us to pick him at 6th. I'm not sure Gregory is a good idea and Fowler probably doesn't drop to 6th. But, yeah, my initial opinion wouldn't be a particularly good one if we ended up with Ray at 6th overall.
Offensive line needs help also. I'm not all that interested in Ray, he doesn't seem to have the physicality of Beasley, Fowler or Gregory. I think Ray however, has the best motor. I think Fowler will be gone, so I think Beasley could be the Jets answer @ 6 if they go pass-rusher. I would take Cooper over any pass-rusher, I believe I would take Mariota over any pass-rusher as well. White, I wouldn't pick over any of the players listed above. He's a 1 hit wonder. Fowler will be in all downs on defense, can't say the same for Beasley or Gregory.
I think he's a big time reach @ 6. I would take Gregory over Shane Ray. I don't know if I would be happy with that selection.
You're right of course that if Mac, Bowles and the Scouts like Ray, it could happen if they're determined to get an OLB/pass rusher they like at #6. We agree that Fowler probably won't drop and that Gregory isn't a good idea. I would be totally shocked if Mac rolled the dice on Gregory, and less so on Ray. At least Ray had a ton of production at the collegiate level and has a great motor, even if he doesn't have the prototypical size and speed you'd want. I think a LOT of fans would go ballistic if the Jets drafted Ray and left Cooper or White or even Mariota on the board. I think there would be pretty much the same reaction if they drafted Leonard Williams. While I agree with the draft pundits that there would be better value in getting a top OLB prospect at #6 over getting a top WR prospect, many Jets fans are sick of all the #1 picks going to the D and none to the offense. I can understand that and have some of the same feelings myself. My rational mind says that the OLB would be the better value and that they could still get a very good WR in the 2nd or 3rd round, however. One thing is for certain. I think it's going to be very interesting to see how this draft goes for it should be an interesting and entertaining season.
I understand your thoughts, but you know what? I'd rather have Ray than Gregory. I just don't trust Gregory. He is obviously stupid and has some real character concerns. Ray is a hard worker and has a great motor. While I'd worry that due to his lack of size and speed he might not be as effective in the NFL as he was in college, I know at least that he'd be busting his butt trying and wouldn't have to worry about his character. I can't imagine a rookie GM making Gregory his first pick ever in the draft. A scout or two thought he had the potential to bust even before the character concerns surfaced. I might roll the dice on him if he fell to the 2nd round, but sure wouldn't make him my first pick.
Maybe it's paranoia but the whole Gregory marijuana thing has me spooked off him, at least at 6th. From a talent perspective he's absolutely above Ray but seems less likely that Ray is suspended for a year or out of the league due to substance abuse issues. I also question the dedication and intelligence of Gregory to get caught for drug use at the combine when he knows they are going to be tested for it. That's just plain stupid. I think it's entirely possible or even likely that Fowler and Beasley are gone ahead of us and that Ray and Gregory are the best two pass rushers at our spot so if we are really pushing for a pass rusher then I'd take Ray over Gregory. As I stated, I'm not in love with the idea of drafting Ray but we could do a lot worse.
Usually in the draft I have a very strong feeling on who we should pick up and really care what side of the ball it is on. This year though I sort of more have pools of players I would really like (Fowler), I'd be pretty happy about (Beasley and Mariota with no trade up), I'd be cautiously optimistic about (White and Ray) and wouldn't really like (Dupree, Gregory and anyone via trading up from 6th).
Gregory won't fall to the 2nd round. That guy has far too much potential and his tape is outstanding. He only needs to bulk up, other then that he has pretty good speed and long arms. He's athletic and relentless w/ good technique. Plus, the way he uses his hands to disengage defenders, I think that's a good tool. Shane Ray, I think his game is predicated on his athletic ability and speed alone. I also believe Ray will have trouble getting off blocks at the next level. http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.co...015-nfl-draft-prospects-shane-ray-de-missouri Appears to me he can get lost out there. Just strictly on ability alone, not really going into the off-the field specifics, you are right about his off the field issues - If a trade down were to happen, I would certainty consider Gregory. I think @ 6, the only pass-rushers I would consider are Fowler or Beasley at this juncture.
I wouldn't take a pass-rusher at all if Fowler or Beasley are off the clock. Both Ray and Gregory are reaches IMO - but Gregory is a better player. I'd immediately start looking at offensive line, or trading down.
I agree that Gregory won't fall into the 2nd round. He has too much talent and some team will take a risk on him. I just can't see a rookie GM and HC being willing to take a risk on him. The danger with him is not only his off field issues, but that they may affect his on field play, or he may not be available to play because he's suspended. I agree with you that there's a good chance that Ray will struggle some in the NFL, but at the same time I thought the same thing about Ryan Kerrigan a few seasons ago. I didn't think he had the speed or strength and he's done pretty well.
Obviously there are a lot of variables but if the specific scenario was a choice between drafting Ray at 6th or trading down I would be all for trading down. If we trade down and Ray or Gregory are available in the 12-16 kind of range then I would take them or maybe some offensive line help. So we're ultimately on the same page. I don't really think in the grand scheme of things Ray is a reach at 6th but he depending on who is available he wouldn't be my first and probably not my second choice (trading down).
