Mangold is another subject. Imo there's no current interest in going after him. Maybe next off season. As for Ferguson, whether he gets "much" or not as an FA is an open question. I merely am trying to make the point that whether he might think he might get more from another team than the Jets offer him in a new contract, and whether in fact he might get that, is something we simply do not know. And not knowing we can't assume he wouldn't. That;s all I am saying that is different from your assessment, that and that it means the Jets may well hold some cards in leverage, but they do not hold them all.
Obviously we have to put a dollar figure on him that is competitive, we can't force him to take the Vet min. But the idea of cutting him and saving 9 million does not bode well for his cause.
Cutting him and saving 9 mil is not the only effect. Cutting him also means the Jets do not have a starting LT. Not that they can't get one. But they would then have to. Along with all the other things they have to do.
Yes I understand, but in regards to leverage he has very little and basically has to take a pay cut. I understand that we would have to find a new Left Tackle and I would ideally want him to come back at a reduced price because we would be hard pressed to find one but its not impossible. Cutting and signing a new left tackle is plan B in my opinion.
I agree the best move for the Jets is to have Ferguson come back with a new and cheaper contract. That is precisely why I say he has some leverage, and the Jets do not have all the leverage.
Its amazing to me how top heavy the Jets contracts are. Revis and Wilk alone are 20% of the Jets cap. Because of that, the Jets currently only have about $4 mio in space and that is without resigning Fitz or having a decent QB on the roster. If you cut all the guys we have been thinking that only gets you an additional $8.5 million: Breno (+4.3) Kerley (+1.3) Cumberland (+1.9) Geno (+1.1) I would think if guys like Brick, Mangold, Marshall and Decker want to make a playoff run, and if they want Fitz, they all need to go into an office with Mac and restructure a bit. They should drag Meevis into the office with them.
Yes, but the owner are not just gonna eat those costs. They're going to pass them along to the fans in terms of higher seat licenses, higher season and individual game tickets, higher concession prices, higher parking prices, etc. Some owners don't have the deep pockets that others do, and they're in it more as a business, and probably don't care if they win a SB. They'll simply stop paying those ridiculous prices, and go with very young teams. It will hurt the quality of the league overall.
The NFL has a salary floor so owners can't pull a full out Jeff Loria. Also, they raise prices because people are willing to pay.
As much as I dislike Brick, cutting him won't help. He isn't worth the money and needs restructured. What if we cut him? What we save, won't buy back someone better than him, so we won't gain any money without a play drop off. Same situation for Mangold. Ivory and maybe Powell, won't be back. Harrison doesn't look like he is coming back. When we finish dropping Kerley, Cumberland, and whom ever else, we won't save enough to help much. Our only hope is if the league raises the cap number. We need about 20 million or more to work with. Cut Brick, Mangold and mevis, and we would have plenty, but look at the holes it would create. I don't know what to do.
Mevis gets $17 mil guaranteed. Cutting him saves nothing. As much as we could use them Brick, Mangold, and Wilkerson make a lot of money and losing any or all of them would buy us breathing room to sign Snacks or outside free agents. Keeping all three means we have very little room for anyone else. While we have several contracts that we could re-work to backload the money I think it would be a bad idea to do so because winning a SB is unlikely if we did go all in this year and patience could allow us to build a great team over the next couple years.
I disagree. As bad as Brick's play was last year, I think any number of LTs could take his place, play better, and would be cheaper. Still, it would probably be best to let him finish his career as a Jet. He needs to be told that this is his last season and that he will take a $5 million pay cut this season. Mevis cannot be cut. The team would take a huge dead money hit to the tune of $25 million. We would lose $8 million in cap space, not gain anything.
I don't buy the LT talk but could see them cutting Breno and letting him take over at RT if we don't find a replacement in the draft.
