He's had a lot of great, physical plays, and more than a few ugly ones. The dude is as talented as they come, and really cares, but he had too much put on his plate too early. With a guy like Decker taking away that pressure, we'll see what he can do.
But aren't you concerned about his injuries, and low yard totals? It seems like he's often missing games, dropping passes, and overall he just hasn't been a consistently good or even decent player. I feel like some of these new wideouts are going to out-hustle him and take his roster spot away unless the proverbial light bulb turns on for Hill this year.
The thing is people don't realize how much he improved from 2012 to 2013. Yes, he was not great in 2013 but he showed significant improvement from the pile of crap he gave us in 2012. There were a lot of factors that led to minimal production in 2013, not the least of which were injuries to an already weak receiving corp around him. There were times when he was the only one of our top 3 WR's active, and those were some of Geno's most horrific showings. I'm not touting this guy as the next Demaryius Thomas but he doesn't even have to improve at the same rate as he did from 2012 to 2013 to wind up as our 2nd best WR. The fans have been extremely impatient with him, but I'm telling you I've seen serious improvements in his route running, hands, and WR/QB chemistry from his rookie year. Production will come with development from Geno, and less pressure due to Decker and the improved running game.
You honestly think if it comes down to Saunders vs. Hill for a roster spot that Rex & Idzik choose Hill over Saunders? I think you're being naive here. It's very rare that teams cut 4th round picks in their rookie season. Idzik drafted Saunders, not Hill, and it seems Rex never wanted to pick Hill to begin with. We can also discuss special teams.
Sanders can contribute on ST. If Hill doesn't step up, Sanders will have more value to the team and Hill will be gone.
Hill won't be cut this year..when the season is over it will probably be a different story unless he shows improvement, he still has 2 years left on his rookie contract.
Both right on the money. Hill needs to show ability to play outside this year or the Jets will keep another piece that helps the team. There's no room for third year projects on a roster that is trying to come together this year and compete and the Jets are trying to do that. The rookie wage scale and free agency have made a mockery out of developmental multi-year picks. I'm not even sure you can justify keeping a QB on the bench for a year or two any more.
Again ... Stephen Hill will be taking the 1st team reps in a couple weeks. Ppl forget ... Hill never lost his starting job last year ... He was placed on IR and Kerley replaced him. Hill has been praised for his work ethic go read all the quotes on Hill's work ethic and preparation. Ryan has praised him, MM has praised him. He's a good kid trying to figure it out. He came from a school that had a run-option offense. He'll be with the 1st team, and while the rooks, Nelson, etc may have a chance to knock him off I just don't see it ... Anyway ... He was a camp standout last year why would his 3rd year be different. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
I don't know if you've noticed but Rex and MM praise everyone. I remember when Rex said Eric Smith reminded him of Ed Reed. That was awesome. First team reps in June mean nothing, especially when you have as many WR's as we do competing for roster spots.
The receivers the Jets just drafted all exhibit a trait that Stephen Hill does not: toughness. Hill will be on a very short leash and will have to be absolutely outstanding to make it on to the opening day roster.
As far as NFL WRs go, on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being excellent and 1 being useless) how would you assess Hill's ability/performance thus far as a blocker? Just trying to get a handle on the actual extent of your football awareness and knowledge....
Bocking is more of a "nice to have" for a WR than a reason to draft or keep them. Maybe you would use it as a tie-breaker between two guys all other things being equal but it's not really what you're looking for in a WR.
Without a doubt. The specific purpose of the question, however, was to qualify the overall value and integrity of the opinion(s) of the quoted poster with respect to Hill. Even for someone with an admittedly negative bias towards Hill such as yourself, you are also willing to put forth objective and honest assessments (if or when merited) so as to make you someone whose opinion, whether I agree with it or not, is deserving of full notice and respect. Others, it is not so evidently clear, ergo the question....
Its funny listening to people declare that a certain draft pick means the end for one individual player. If Stephen Hill has a great TC and PS he'll be on the team and a guy like David Nelson for example could be cut instead. We don't know whats going to happen until things play out. It's obvious the Jets have lost confidence in Hill, but he could always win them back over.
Hills problem is that he doesn't know how to use his size. He is 6'4 but acts like hes 5'8 in jump ball situations.
I don't understand so please help me out here. Exactly how does a 6'4" player act like he's 5'8" in a jump ball situation?
