A couple of years ago I vowed not to follow that Yankees again until Steinbrenner is no longer with the team. If he fires Torre, I won't follow them again until he's dead.
Torre has been great but I suspect it is time for him to go. Let's face it, if Billy Martin hadn't been in that car accident, Torre would have been replaced years ago.
I like this if only because it means Piniella isn't the new Cubs manager. Might even mean that Torre is...that would be acceptable.
We don't need K-Rod, Giambino or Shef. And scrap the whole pitching staff except for Wang and Mariano. And although I love Sweet Lou for his history as a Yankee, what exactly did they win the last time he managed the Yankees?
He's right, Torre is not a great fit for a bunch of superstars. He was a great fit for a farm-built dynasty.
Well as far as people not blaming Torre for this collapse, I disagree. If he is as respected as is supposedly true, why didn't he say anything to this team at some point? We heard nothing about closed-door meetings before the games. He spent the entire series hanging out with his coaching staff and not speaking a word to the players in the dugout. What good did he do? From everything I saw, he didn't cause the collpase, but he also didn't do anything to change the pace. I have said over and over I want him gone, and I don't want Pinella. Lou has taken a superior team and done nothing with it (Seattle.) He has done nothing on any of his stops around the majors. Girardi is my choice. He already has respect from the leftovers of the dynasty years. He understands players, and knows how to motivate a team with lesser talent to do big things. I think he'd be the perfect fit for us. If this team turns into an ARod's team, I think the Yankees can kiss their ticket sales goodbye. All the "96ers" will jump ship and jump on the Mets bandwagon. I talked a lot about this series being the last straw for me, and while I woke up this morning with a better attitude, I'm not sure I could continue to watch every game all year with ARod as the centerpiece.
You think a closed door meeting is what the yankees needed? it's jo's fault these guys couldn't hit? Come on. It's the poor construction of the tam built around chokers, isntead of following Jeter they follow ARod's lead.
Couple of things. Joe made up the lineups. Instead of sticking with what got him there, he chose to go with his flashy repaired toys. You stick with what got you there from the start. Chemistry is key in sports. Yes, closed-door meetings matter. That's what he did after that 19 run debacle. He's done numerous other times in his tenure, and it's always worked. If he is the master motivator he so often gets credit for, why didn't he use that? And to just be standing there in silence with his coaches while the team was getting pounded is just ridiculous. You have to take your position as manager more seriously than that. Sometimes even the best need a kick in the ass. That's what these guys needed, and no one gave it to them. Yes, this team followed ARod's lead. However, Joe allowed it.
Personally, I don 't think it has anything to do with choking. The Tigers had the best pitching in the AL this year, and they pitched like it the last two days. Conversely, the Yankees went on a two game road trip and started over the Hill Randy and Jared Wright. Johnson gave up 5 runs the last three starts before Friday. Why would people think it would be different. Wright was never good. Ever. Maybe half a year in Cleveland. Instead of bringing in big names, the Yankees should trade big names for pitching prospects. Outside of Rodgers, the Tigers staff were all prospects a short time ago. Oh.....and GO METS!!!! Thought I'd throw that in.
Hell yea im happy as hell about that. I like Lou Pinella. He has a lot of fire like Larry Bowa and he knows how to manage a bullpen.
Piniella won the World Series with the Reds. If Girardi couldn't get along with Larry Beinfest (who is one of the better people in the sport), then I don't think I'd want him managing my team.
Really? When? I don't remember that. (Not saying it didn't happen, I just don't recall it.) But he does get along with everyone in the Yankees organization. Plus, he's already a friend to the dynasty leftovers. Either way though, as long as Torre is sent packing, I am satisfied for now.
Piniella won the WS as manager of the Reds in 1990. He also got into a fight with Rob Dibble in the clubhouse (not sure what year with that). That is a classic clip. One of the funniest sports moments.
When they swept Oakland? That was Pinella? Crap, I remember that being my favorite WS as a kid. Why didn't I remember it was Pinella that led it? Time to start taking that Ginko...
