Just raided the office liquor closet for some Laphroaig 18 year old single malt. I would have broken beer bottles over someone's head for drinking such an obnoxious pretentious thing thirty years ago.
Can't enjoy the Islay Scotches like Laphraoig. It smells like they aged it in a vat filled with old gym sneakers.
+1000. I literally have a hard time even bringing them up to my nose. Someone bought me a dram last year after I told them I couldn't stand them and still they insisted and I couldn't even get a sip down. _
I didn't start drinking scotch until my 40's and didn't start on single malts until I turned 50. Its kind of like beer. 10-15 years ago I was drinking a lot of good German lagers and Pilsners but as I got older, the hoppier I liked my beer so now I'm doing tripels and IPAs and belgian ales and hefe weizens. Tastes evolve. _
Yes it's funny. I used to hate onions. I don't like IPA's yet but some of the beers I used to like taste like just dirty water now.
Remember how great Heineken was? Corona? Now they taste skunked. The Heineken in Holland is nothing like the swill they serve here. _
I was with you until the hefeweizen thing...... but it's still hard to beat a cold German lager or similar pilsner on a hot summer day
oh, to get this back on track....... try grilling your lobster tails on the half shell with a garlic lime cilantro butter.... SON
Clearly. I started drinking great hefe weizens in Germany when it was cold out and they really hit the spot. I'm not drinking them in the summer in NJ. My favorite hot summer day beer is still Spaten. _
I dont like them anytime. I like full bodied beers, but I want to drink it, not chew it, and I think the wheat taste is fucked up..... I dunno, maybe it's me. My Dad's 1st gen american, Becks is still is fav. (I prefer warsteiner) and his fridge is usually full of it. Yeah, it's brewed in STL now, but that just means it's cheaper. Which is good, because it goes down WAY to easy on a FL Sunday afternoon. (esp considering I go there during the season to watch the JETS on a tv outside on the porch)
Yeah I get the chew factor, it was a long story health thing in Bavaria that got me liking them. Had to be there My Dad's first "German" beer was Lowenbrau which was basically Miller in a fancy bottle with tin foil atop. _
1st Gen. as in Opa was fresh off Das boat Funny you mentioned that as Lowenbrau came up in conversation the other night. Miller F-ed it up so bad Lowenbrau took it back and it's now German beer again... and 6 pack costs more than a 12 did 10 years ago. Havent had it since, but in college I would. That was my "baller beer" at one point.
