Biggs get a grip. Idzik is not paying millions to a starter, to surf, or play somewhere else, and bank his career as a GM in his first year, to a guy that hasnt been on the field for two seasons, and a rookie thats only run the airraid. Sanchez does not need to be resigned. hes signed through 2016. With no downside for the jets after this year. But THIS YEAR...he gets 8 mil. So, if youre idzik...are you really contemplating Garrard, Smith...and paying Sanchez 8 million to not play, when one guy is an injury waiting to happen, and the other guy never ran an NFL offense. No. Sanchez plays, Garrard carries the clipboard and Mentors Smith, until Injury or bad play dictates otherwise. And, why are all the Geno fans eager to not have him compete with Sanchez? Ps...Sanchez had a better Senior year than Smith. Dont buy the hype.(similar points in time, Sanchez was the better player)
If Smith in fact is excellent, which we should all hope for, I think it would not make sense to use a high pick next year, or even worse packaging picks, to get one of those great prospects at Qb. Why? because the Jets have too many holes elsewhere. Conversely if Smith does not have what it takes to be a top 15 NFL Qb, the Jets will want to know as much as they can about that (conceding one year's performance is likely to be somewhat incomplete as a source of info) before entering next year's draft. I frankly think the logic of this is flawless. The only downside is that "seeing what Smith has" means he will not have the luxury of sitting and learning. But realistically unless the Jets are lie 7-4 (6-5?) with five to go, the fans will be demanding Smith on the field, anyway.
No downside? 13,100K cap hit in 2014, 15,600K in 15, 13,850K in 16. Unless Sanchez turns into a beast top 6 he is going to be cut after next year.
The coaches will be able to see what Smith has without him being on the field. Further, even if Smith does work out, the jets STILL need to keep drafting QBs. Sanchez has no future here, Garrard has no future here, McElroy has no future here, and Simms has no future here. Its not enough to have a franchise QB... the Jets need depth. They don't need to go crazy pursuing Bridgewater or Manziel next year... but if its early-mid second round, it absolutely makes sense to draft someone like Tajh Boyd. The Jets should draft a QB every year until they have a long term answer at starter, 2nd string, and 3rd string. That won't happen overnight.
Depth is nice, but what teams that want to contend in the playoffs really need, even with good to great D's, is a top 15 Qb. The Jets will want to know if Smith is looking like that kind of guy by next off season, and no, you can't tell just looking at performance in practice. Cause if he's not that kind of guy, the Jets may in fact be well served next off season by going crazy and trying to land one of hte top prospects.
Top 15 QBs aren't born, they are developed. If you look at most (not all) of the top 15 QBs in the NFL right now, they were not top 15 QBs in their first season. Eli Manning, two Super Bowls, some didn't even think he was a top 15 QB after his first one. It wasn't until the second that he got the respect he deserves. Drew Brees got run out of San Diego as a bust. Now he's a top 5 QB in the NFL. The difference there was coaching and the talent surrounding him, as well as time. Tom Brady WAS a top 15 QB by his second season, but he was also drafted in the sixth round so its safe to say nobody saw that coming. Big Ben did win a SB his second year, but they played it ultrasafe with him that year. He effectively managed the games without screwing them up, letting the rest of the Steelers win it. He developed into an elite QB later. Aaron Rodgers fell the way Geno did and sat for a bunch of years before being given his shot. The only guy in the NFL who really has lived up to his billing as elite from day 1 is Peyton Manning. There are a lot of QBs out there that people like such as Matt Ryan, but he hasn't done squat to put the Falcons over the top even with all the talent around him. Then you have someone like Cam Newton for all his talent and excitement and the Panthers don't win anyway because the supporting cast isn't there. Its unrealistic to put Geno Smith in from day 1 and expect big things or even an idea of what big things might come later. Take it slow with him, and put him in when he's ready. If that's day 1 then great... if not, there's no shame in bringing him along slow and smart.
geez and when he does it'll be under the largest microscope since namath, todd/robinson, pennington, and sanchez..... i hope smith surrounds himself with the right people and support staff - both connected with the jets and not. i hope for his sake and the jets that this doesn't turn into a vince young/ryan leaf part 2. its really a true crapshoot with him. that being said - the jets october schedule is brutal on paper and seems to ease off the second 1/2 of the year. if all things look OK in preseason and stuff he gets a nod somewhere after october.
Nowhere did I say that playing a Qb in his rookie year tells you all you need to know about someone. But it tells you something, and I would be VERY surprised if Smith does not see the field in the coming season.
If anything I want to wait so we can get him Marqise Lee or somehow end up with a monster in Clowney. Let me stop from drooling
I mostly agree but to nit pick, Roethlisberger didn't win the superbowl as a rookie. It was his second season.
There's only one David Carr. The only guy ever to get decapitated by Vernon Gholston (even though it was a roughing the passer penalty in the preseason - classic).
Give it a fucking break, man. How long are you going to keep this going? Idzik is not paying millions to a starter. Period. Sanchez is not out starting QB. If he somehow magically starts, which I would say has about a 3% chance of happening, he wont be starting for the entire season. Sanchez in college was surrounded by a much better team and defense and did not put up as good of numbers as Geno. The only stat thats noticeably better than Geno's is yards per attempt, which is completely dictated by the system. Its obviously not a telling stat because Sanchez's YPA have been absolutely atrocious in the NFL. He is averaging 6.5 YPA, which is 75% of what it was in college. You [few] Sanchez supporters should not bring up stats, because Sanchez loses every time in the NFL.
Best case scenario for the Jets: Geno starts and goes 9-7 or 10-6 in his first season. He obviously would have the makings of a franchise quarterback. We then proceed to trade up to get Clowney. Our defense INSTANTLY becomes feared. We add an elite WR and TE. All of a sudden, our offense is way above average. We become Superbowl contenders for the next 5 years.
Usually I'd have an opinion or good guess as to what's going to happen with this QB competition, but I have absolutely no clue what's gonna happen. Does Idzik take the chance of repeating a Sanchez situation by starting Smith Week 1? Or does he have Geno sit and learn this year. If the Jets are really done with Sanchez, do they start him yet again this coming season if he wins the competition?
8+ pages of people providing opinions on something they know nothing about. The answer is simple - If Smith wins the starting job then he should start. If Smith doesn't win the starting job then he shouldn't be the starter. There is no way to know the answer at this point because its way too early to know whether Smith is able to win the starting job.
