Wow shocked, this great pick which the media labeled as the best QB in the draft and the next great thing to hit NY and most people agree he shouldn't even start for a year or two. May I ask, on a team which has so many needs how do we justify drafting a player who may never see the field? If we are going to wait for a year, why not draft a guy we can use now, and draft a QB next year who is better and could start day one? Oh, I forgot Rex and Woody are in the house and there are seats to be sold this year.

I say start Geno, and maybe by next years draft we will realize we need a real QB that doesn't need to look to the sideline to know which WR to throw at.

i didn't vote. i was looking for the "open compensation" option.

if he is the best qb on the roster he should start

    Why they shouldn't start Smith:

    1) Holmes will resume being a problem the first time he gets less than 5 passes thrown his way. He will be gone at the end of the 2013 season, no reason to start building "rapport" here.
    2) We have no idea how good Hill is yet.
    3) You can't have a successful passing game purely throwing to the slot receiver (Kerley).
    4) Jeff Cumberland... enough said.

so if you have to build around this new QB for him to succeed, why not use the pick to build around Sanchez who is already paid? Then if Sanchez still can't get it together, at least we have a piece for the next QB. Next year is going to have a handful of QBs which are already rated higher than Smith. I say it's all about the seats.

If it were about the seats Geno would've went 9th overall. He didn't. They risked letting him go to another team in order to follow the draft board. If he went 9th overall this would be a different conversation.

Second, Sanchez is mentally shot. His problems are fully mental, not physical. Sanchez is a very talented quarterback. Sanchez has developed David Carr syndrome and that is a direct result of constant changes in personnel and failing to protect him. They threw him into the fire with a team built to win now rather than built to be sustainable for the next 10-15 years, then simply expected him to improve on what the Jets had done with all those win now pieces walking out the door. Sanchez wasn't ready and they took away the targets he did know.

The roster management after drafting Sanchez was nothing short of awful. I don't want to see these mistakes repeated with Geno Smith. There's no rush to get him in there. Develop him.

Mornhinweg loves this guy..says he is perfect for the west coast offense..I am guessing they drafted him to start.

If he wins an open competition then that's fine. I just don't want him handed the job like Sanchez was.

Start him so when every sees how lost he is we can get quicker to finding a real solution for QB.

I'm actually looking forward to this. It's amazing how Jets fans watch a YouTube video and have convinced themselves this is their new hero. 40 years of misery can make people reeeeeallly desperate to believe.

id let his play in camp or preseason decide that. dont think it should be preconcieved. we dont need him to start. let him play whenever he is ready. be in game 1 or game 17

This is an ongoing debate amongst analysts right now. Some say wait, others say start him immediately. I feel we should make that decision all based on how the offseason goes. If he does well in training camp and we give him weapons, I don't see the harm in letting him start.

Some players will be ruined if started immediately, but some just need that initial snap to start to feel comfortable. I can see Geno feeling very comfortable after getting that first snap off.

It's prob in the best interest to sit this guy down. Still have no TEs or WRs, still haven't addressed any needs in a crucial draft - we need to score points. This organization just baffles me.

Sit him. Let him learn what it takes to be a pro and learn about the NY media.

I'd start him from game one. If he can play, he can play. Personally, I don't think he's a Pro Bowl caliber NFL QB (and would not have picked him) ... but if he is, he'll show he can play from day one. Luck played on a team last year with the least talent in the league and almost put them in the playoffs.

Our team is going to blow (on offense) regardless of who plays, so we might as well see what Geno has. It's not like losing a few games will cost us a Super Bowl this year.

Let him sit. Let Gerrard or McElroy start. Cut Tebow & Cut/Bench Sanchez. Year 2 or maybe half way through this year if he shows promise, he should get a serious look to start.

Spot on post... the roster management after Sanchez's rookie year was downright terrible. When you lose multiple starters on the OL, a 1500 yard rusher, your #1 WR, his change of pace wildcat QB and have 2 shitty offensive coordinators in 4 years you are going to struggle. Physically Mark has all the tools but you are right, mentally he is shot. A lot of that falls on Rex and Tannenbum for neglecting the offense year in and year out. They finally added a WR last year in Hill who was raw and needed to adjust to the pro game and couldn't seem to stay healthy. Instead of drafting a quality OL they draft a project, instead of drafting a TE they sign converted Fullbacks, they traded multiple picks for Edwards only to let him walk.

As far as Geno does it really matter if he starts this year or not? He is not going to be a good QB so better to learn it now rather than be stuck with him for 4 years. He has many of the same issues Sanchez had, locks onto targets, can't read a defense, overthrows his WRs. He also doesn't have two top flight college WRs to throw to. He never took snaps under center in college and he played in a gimmick offense. He isn't RGIII athletic wise and despite having a big arm a good majority of his passes where screens and dump passes. At the end of the day he'll just be another QB failure this team drafted high.

WAIT. Dear God, please wait. Geno, I don't think, is one of those step in right away guys in any situation. Placing him in the situation we have on O could be disastrous. Plus I think Garrard would be a very good QB for him to learn behind for a year.

Think a lot of us are worried about screwing up the development of another young QB prospect. Although the majority of Jets Nation wants Sanchez replaced, there's still debates on whether Jets screwed up the development of a promising young QB.

Sanchez starting in his rookie year is imho a big reason many want Geno Smith to sit out the beginning (or entire) first season.
