It was ok. Movie theater was half full on a 4:05 Saturday showing which is all things considered not bad for Waterford. I rate it about where I rate the third movie in the original Star Wars trilogy: satisfying but leaving me thinking it could have been a lot better. As people have mentioned it will be a good date movie. Wrath of Khan's position as all time best Star Trek movie still safe by a wide margin.
Went to see the movie today. Never watched any of the episodes or any other previous movies. Never got into Star Trek, but decided to go watch this and surprisingly I really loved it. It was perfectly done.
Just got back. Loved it. The characters were spot on & I absolutely loved Simon Pegg as Scotty and John Cho as Sulu...My girlfriend who never liked Star Trek loved it as well...
went and saw it today. graduation meant no one would be at the theater tonight for the 7:25, so me, gf, and roommates went. its better than episodes 1-3 of star wars for a prequel, thats for sure.
Just got back from seeing the flick. Well done prequel definetly. I liked how they paid homage to the original series and weaved in the new at the same time. Chekov's character needs a better russian accent though. The new Uhura was pretty damn hot although Denise Nichols had better gams back in the day. Loved the throwback unis as well and the NCC-1701 detail was impeccable. Not overdone, not underdone either. I have a feeling they're gonna resurrect this franchise. I just hope they don't follow the original movie genesis and try to do a Wrath of Khan episode next. I think that Romulan might be Kirk's new arch nemesis if they can somehow explain how he survived the black hole/red matter thing. I'm glad it was Nimoy and not Shatner giving the epilogue to the movie. I hope there's more to come this summer as far as decent action flicks.
I'm going to see it tonight. I've heard nothing but praise so I'm looking forward to it. I've never seen any Star Trek movies or anything so hopefully I can get what's going on.
The movie was great, but the Trekkie nerds in the audience kept applauding every little thing, which annoyed the living hell out of me.
This is why I never see a fanboy-attracting movie too close to its release, unless I'm one of the fanboys. In this case, I am not. I've never seen an episode of the show but I've seen Star Trek: First Contact and enjoyed it.
I didn't notice that when I saw it, but I hate it when people clap or talk during a movie period. I went to see it last night and probably a third of the audience was kids and kids are loud and annoying. I thought the movie was great though. I was surprised.
I went to see one of those Trek movies years ago on the Friday it came out, there were people in costumes, and they laughed LOLed at every stupid one-liner or inside joke that one of the characters said. Yeah, been there. We're seeing it Wednesday afternoon.
Me and the girl went to the 10:45 show last night and most of the crowd was quite embarrassing... to the point I almost stole my own lunch money just for being there....
Saw it in the dome at the Arclight and thought it was great. I've never been a Star Trek fan, just kind of ambivalent, but I liked how they allowed for a reboot of the franchise. Thought it was well done. VERY MINOR SPOILER ALERT I also liked how they maintained the social commentary that Star Trek was known for. I read something a few years back about how Star Trek's sci fi genre allowed it to criticize society in a way that was generally frowned upon for TV at the time. While we certainly don't have that issue today, it was nice to see them take on the issue of terrorism and "global" intervention. Nero reminded me a bit of a less developed version of the Iraqi guy in Three Kings.
pretty good movie, but i feel like this is going to be 2009's ironman. entertaining and mildly amusing the first time but won't stand up to repeat viewing with the nonexistant/ridiculous plot.
The one thing that bothered me about the movie was the 'old spock'. I know he's the guy who plays the original spock and that's cool but he was doing some serious overacting. And those dentures definitely didn't help.
I dunno, maybe I had my Trek "beer goggles" on, as I just couldn't get the taste of the last two ST movies out of my mouth until I watched this and remembered what a well done Trek movie should look like. What you see as a weak plot, I see as a campy, enjoyable reboot. This movie was never meant to compete with other notable reboots such as Batman Begins/The Dark Knight. Those movies HAD to be dark to make up for the over-the-top gayness that was the previous Batman movies (hellooooooooo bat-suit nipples). I think JJ Abrams knew the direction he needed to go with this movie and he did it well. Was the plot convoluted? Sure! And I must confess that I might have poisoned the well on my part as there is actually a "prequel" comic book that came out a few months ago that gives the back story on the Red Matter and sets up the whole Spock/Nero thing, so I don't really know how well the back story and motivations panned out on screen, as I had all the necessary background plot points already in my head coming in, so if that piece was poorly executed when looking at the movie as a solo project, then I somewhat understand some of the complaints...but I still maintain that if my Trek-hating wife wants seconds, SOMETHING went right in the movie
