I would say that Sanchez has a lot of intangibles. He certainly wants it and has the work ethic, and I think his teammates respect him, so he has leadership qualities.

I also think too much has been put on his plate so far. Tom Brady was spoon fed for most of his 1st season (lots of running and high percentage passing plays). They won by with dominating D and a running game that kept the ball away from the opposition in the 4th quarter.

I really thought that was what we were gonna see from the Jets this year. Lean on the D to make the big gamechanging plays and play a controlled offense.

I never wanted Stafford in the first place, due mainly to the fact that he was a somewhat inaccurate QB in college and that translates poorly to the NFL. I'd much rather have Sanchez than him, although I think they both have issues with the situations they're in at the moment.

Stafford has, and could have all season, typical rookie stats and nobody would bat an eye because he's on the Lions. Bad teams and bad rookie QB seasons go hand in hand and are often followed by better on both counts.

Sanchez on the other hand is on a mediocre team, that many people (including myself) vastly over-rated after the hot start. He's putting exactly the numbers you would expect a rookie QB in a weak offensive system to put up and half the fans seem to want him gone already because he wasn't Dan Marino right out of the box.

My best guess right now is that Stafford is out of the NFL in 4 years and Sanchez is still going, but it could be the reverse.

You really think a 25 year old QB with his natural talent won't be able to find a job in the NFL?

That's just crazy talk, especially when guys like Carr, Grossman and Harrington all found jobs after initially flopping. Hell, Dan Orlovsky found a team that wanted him.

Barring injury, both of these guys will definitely get another shot somewhere else if things don't pan out in their current situations.

Neither Stafford or Sanchez were typical top 5 quality at QB. I think it's pretty likely that one of them is gone from the scene by the dawn of the 2015 season.

Of course being as objective as you are in this situation, you apparently forgot that Stafford was playing with a separated shoulder( left) and that his team is very bad compared to our team. His OL plain and simple: sucks. Where is his run game? Outside of Calvin Johnson, tell us about his receivers. Also that defense of the LIONS never gets the ball back for him ala the Jets. Does their Special Teams ever shorten the field for Stafford as ours does for Mark?

Now please tell us how you feel SANCHEZ would be with the LIONS with the current personnel that Stafford has. Thank you.

I don't think Sanchez season would be much different going from the Jets to the Lions. The offensive personnel just isn't that different between the two teams. On defense there's a fairly large difference but there aren't any defensive players on the field at the same time as the QB. Stafford would be having a worse year on the Jets given what has transpired so far.

The one thing the Lions have consistently done this season on offense that the Jets haven't is to use a checkdown receiver and make sure that throws go to him when nothing else is open. There are 3 TE's on the Lions all headed for a 30-45 catch type season. The starting tailback is going to catch about 50-55 balls.

Sanchez season would look a lot better right now if he hadn't lost Cotchery for several games, Leon Washington for the season and had Dustin Keller have such an up and down year. That's his 3 best receivers and they're all part of the problem at times, not the solution.

Part of the reason for Sanchez's struggles is that the CS is treating him like a veteran instead of the rookie he is. He should be limited to 20 or so passes a game and have been able to rely on the running game and the defense to carry the team. If the OL and the defense failed, the blame for losses would fall on veterans and not on a player who should be a college senior.

I still think the downfall started with the Buffalo game when the CS had Sanchez flinging the ball all over the field when all the Jets had to do was protect a 13 point lead against a team that couldn't stop the run at all and couldn't move the ball. Sanchez should have been protected in that game. Then his only "bad" game would have been the Patriot game, and that would have been excused somewhat because of the circumstances - playing a pissed off, superior team on the road coming off a loss.

Jet fans need to start treating Sanchez like the rookie he is instead of expecting a finished product.

This is an excellent description of the problem the Jets and Sanchez have at the moment.

The reason you protect a rookie QB (other than an absolute can't miss guy like Peyton Manning) is that sooner or later he's going to make unforced errors. It's part of the learning process for a young NFL QB, and some of them can't get past that stage and never become good QB's. By protecting the QB you reduce the potential for him to make those unforced errors as he otherwise acclimates himself to the NFL game and figures out how to make it all slow down and become manageable.

When I saw the bomb Schotty called on the first play a few games ago I was outraged. I was outraged when the ball was thrown, long before it was intercepted. Why? Because the Jets gave Sanchez a huge opportunity to make an unforced error right at the start of the game before anything else had been established, and they did this knowing that he was already having typical rookie issues with picks and consistency.

The best result on that play was a one-shot score with everybody getting to feel good about the rookie for a series or two and Brian Schottenheimer looking like a risk-taking genius who mixed things up on offense. High on the list of bad things that could happen was an unforced turnover, a score by the other team on the ensuing series and Sanchez looking shaky at the start of the game.

That play was all about making Brian Schottenheimer look good with Mark Sanchez taking the fall if it went bad. That's so bass-ackwards in terms of what the Jets should be doing to develop their rookie QB.

I like Clemens better for our future but Pennington would probably be better right now, but since he is injured I guess Clemens should start but what about Ratliff?? Ratliff to Clowney all day.

I had to smile at this - the Lions forced and recovered a fumble on the opening KO this week.

I agree, unless they are a complete failure, like the names mentioned, they will find backup jobs at least. Stafford and Sanchez have at least shown something.

Top 10 QB's are a bit better than 50/50 to get another job if they flunk out on their first go-round. For every David Carr there's a Tim Couch, for every Joey Harrington there's an Akili Smith.

Based on the history you can make arguments for either Stafford or Sanchez being a survivor if they flop out on the Lions and Jets. Overall #1 picks almost always get another chance, the main exception being Tim Couch. Top 5 QB's who are not #1 have a higher lack of acceptance after their first gig.

The countervailing factors here are primarily the level of the prospects themselves. Stafford really was not that highly regarded coming out of college. Most teams were glad they did not have to make that call on a $70 million dollar contract. Sanchez was also not considered a topflight prospect, but he was seen as more likely to pan out - although maybe not with the upside that Stafford represented if things went perfectly.

My gut tells me that Sanchez will likely get another opportunity somewhere if the Jets blow his development. He's a latino QB in a league that really wants to get that demographic on board and there are a bunch of teams (like anybody who happened to wind up in LA in 2014) who would probably take a look at him on that basis alone.

Stafford's chances if he doesn't pan out with the Lions are basically going to be based on whether or not he shows flashes of maturing into a good QB and the consensus is that the Lions screwed things up with him. He really was not a very accurate passer over his college career so inaccuracy early on will weigh against him more than it would for Sanchez. This is not particularly fair given that Sanchez only had one season in an offense geared to produce good QB numbers but it is a factor.

One thing to think about with both of them is that JaMarcus Russell actually had a better season accuracy wise as a senior than either of them had. So one season doesn't tell you much. They're both going to have to get the numbers up near 60% to be seen as a good QB to build around.

First off we are developimng a QB for the future not just this year. if the goal was to just try to win this year they'd let him hand off 30+ times a game and he wouldn't develop.

Second, he's had a GOOD year overall. He's had 3 atrocious games that skew his #s but he's shown he can move this football team on a weekly basis w/ the exception of those 3 weeks.

You have to be able to run and pass and he gets better pretty much every week. He's done everything we could have asked of him. It's amazing how much criticism he gets.

You are STILL complaining about that great call against Jax? What was to be outraged about? wanting to get him off to a great start by folling the defense? He threw it short, it happens. He came back strong and led us back to take the lead late.

I suppose the INT yesterday was an awful call too b/c Sanchez threw it a little behind Edwards. Just b/c a play doesn't result in something positive doesn't mean the call was bad. We are in the home stretch of his rookie year, it's foolish not to show some trust in him.

That was a horrible call. We probably win that game if we score the first TD and instead we effectively punted on the first play of the game and got Sanchez off to a rocky start.

You absolutely cannot do the things that would look great with an established pro with Sanchez in his rookie season. If Vinny was the QB then a call like that is a good risk. The worst thing that happens is Vinny get picked for the 200th time in his career, puts his head down and comes back to the bench because he knows he screwed up but he (and everybody else) also know that's part of the price of doing business in the NFL.

Going into that play Sanchez had recovered nicely from the debacle against Buffalo, with two straight games and 51 passes since his last interception. Since that call he has thrown 7 interceptions (to get back on the bad rookie season track) in 68 passes.

It was a horrible call and it derailed Sanchez in the process of being a horrible call. Deal with it.

We have no idea how the game goes after that. We don't even know if we get a 1st down and you are assuming TD? The D had a chance to stop Jax, they couldn't. We didn't set them up at our 5. They had the ball at their own 45- great FP but hardly a lock to score a TD but our D blew it just like they did after Sanchez led us to the go ahead TD.

It was a great risk, he just underthrew the ball. He bounced bakc to have a good game overall and should have had his 1st comeback win if our D could have stopped Jax.

He gets a lot of criticism because he is the biggest reason the offense falters when it does. This is to be expected because he is a developing rookie, but thats the fact of this season. He is the weak link. He has tons of potential and thigns look very bring for the future. For this year, a lot of the losses are on him.

To continue to call the Jacksonville game good only shows your bias. He threw two picks bad picks that lead to short feilds. He was bailed out on the 1 yard line after a pick put Jacksonville inside the red zone, but you conveniently forget about that because it does not suit your agenda. The final drive was 44 rushing to 33 passing. He did a great job of letting the running backs and offensive line bring us back in that game. He did not do it.

This past week against Carolina was a example of him playing a good game. Most of his throws were on the money. He made an effort to not put the ball up for grabs by running or taking a hit when he had to. He let the defense and ball controll offense do its job.

Jacksonville is a example of him not taking care of the ball, not being accurate whit his throws, and being a big part of why we lost. You'll never see that though, because your not looking to evaluate, your just looking to argue with people.

I have to agree with this one...... while I usually like the "ballsy" play call, that was stupid. This season has shown that bad things come in bunches for Sanchez, as his confidence suffers.
A few drive sustaining plays to help get him into rhythm and let him get a feel for the game would've been the way to go. If anything you make that playcall on their 1st possession of the 2nd half, or at least after he's made some sustained progress moving the ball.

He led us back from a 21-10 deficit to take the lead. he played well overall, don't just look at the stat sheet and see a porr rating. if the D plays well we easily win that game. He did not lose us that game.
