Coleman is holding his own? If you mean he has his hand in his jock, fine. Burleson beat him like a drum. Burleson had only 8 targets, but had 7 catches for 113 yards and a TD. Holding his own... sure. Double face palm maybe.
Maybe the Steelers will trade them? Polamalu rarely plays man coverage and the Steelers secondary plays a lot more zone. The Jets play more man coverage and Pool and Leonhard at times wind up covering tight ends.
The reality is every single defense in the NFL has a major weakness including the Jets and Steelers. The jets defensive weakness is basically quick passes over the middle by default. Teams have no choice but to perfect that area of the field b/c of the outside coverage, unique blitz packages and our outside Lb's athleticism on the edge. The good news? When an offense lives and dies w/ attacking the middle of a defense, eventually turnovers will occur. There is too much traffic and too many hard hits in that area of the field..and when you rush throws to that area...that makes things all the more dangerous. I'm not saying this shortcoming isn't a concern..All I'm saying is that there are much worse weaknesses a defense can have.
One bad game, for sure, but he had been solid the past 3 or 4 before that after replacing Wilson in the nickel. I would give Lowery a shot, though. I don't know why the coaching staff hates this guy so much. He's pretty fundamentally sound, sure he gets beat, but he's been playing well this year.
I really can't believe Coleman is a better option than Wilson inside. I also think our FS (Pool and Smith) are very similar to each other in terms of what they can bring to the table... I'd like to only keep one (E. Smith for his ST value) and find a true center-field safety... that would really help this D. The inside is our weak spot against the pass...
Wilson needs to stop practicing like some slap-dick practice squad player and get his ass on the field. I won't feel very confident in the playoffs if we have Drew fucking Coleman as our NB.
I agree on the Wilson part, but Eric Smith and Brodney Pool are not that similar to me. (Outside of both of them being black)
Pool and Smith are not comparable in the least. One is a short white dude that can hit but can't cover. Pool at least can cover.
No doubt he had a shit game against Detroit. The statement that he was holding his own extends past this one game. He hasn't been much of a liability so far this year. He sure did get abused by Burleson but that doesn't take away from his performance the rest of the year. Also, I don't think all of those stats came against Coleman. I am pretty sure I saw Leonhard on him for one of his big catches but I may be wrong on that. Either way it doesn't matter because your right that he got burned a lot against Detroit. I think that as far as slot corners go we could be doing a lot worse for what Rex asks of his corners. It also wouldn't hurt to have Wilson figure it out and be able to step in as an upgrade before heading into the playoffs.
If you heard Rex's presser, he knows that those crossing patterns is now how teams will attack his defense. He said in so many words, they don't want to throw to the outside at CRO or Revis, so they will attack the middle. Rex made some adjustments, like that near INT that bounced off Pouha's face mask when he actually dropped into coverage on that one play. Then when Coleman had trouble keeping up with Burleson on those crossing patterns in man coverage, Rex showed some zone. A team with a good QB like Stafford can attack the middle like that. I don't know if Cleveland can do it. McCoy could make some costly mistakes if the Browns come out attacking the middle. I think Poole may be cheating up more in the future to help out whoever is playing the nickle DB slot.
cannot argue here - our perimeter speed is average at best though teams still have a hard time outside the hashes......mainly because of scheme. i would imagine that they will focus on the front seven during the next offseason or 2 and gather a crop of younger faster players to groom. jil
It's pretty obvious that the 2011 Draft needs to bring at least 5 new defensive players. Youth at FS, OLB, DL, and ILB is required out of this draft.
I just wish the pass rush had an animal like Clay Matthews. It seems like The Jets don't get consistent pressure on QB's without blitzing.
I'm sure every team in the league wishes they had the leading DPOY candidate. Also, 3-4 teams aren't built to get pressure without blitzing. I feel like I've typed this 400 times on this board.
