The one thing Mac has going for him is his first round successs whether lucky or not. How many prior Jets GMs couldn’t even get that right ? They even put a video montage on utube about all their crappy picks and the fans reactions .....other then Tanny hitting in 06 with Brick and Mangold and then 07 with Revis then Harris later the first round was usually a nightmare . Using Woodys logic - hey he’s done very well with the top 5 picks ......the later picks are crapshoots anyway.
If that's who he is (and I hope its not) then he is simply a poor General Manager. Anyone really can do well in round 1, especially when you are picking so high in round 1 - 3 top 10 picks in 4 years - as MacCagnan has had. Its time to bring in some talent outside of that for once. Draft, free agency, I don't care but bring in some talent. Otherwise anyone here could do his job, just grabbing a good player with the top 10 draft pick every year and little else
Unless Mac has Gase and Williams checking his Homework we are screwed..thats are only hope starting next week I dont trust him as far as I can throw him IMO Mac should take a seat and let Williams pick a Pass Rusher and Gase push for the right OL and WR for that matter. At least Mac has put out we want a possible trade down and will pursue Bell. OTOH If there is NO trade partner Mac has to take the HC advice who we select at 3. In Free Agency, he cant do something stupid with Ring Ding the Ding Dong. Sign T Coleman if all else fails The interest for Bell may be on the wane...if he comes to us Mac has a big opportunity to enact a coup by signing Leveon for less $
You have to wonder what our scouting department spends its time doing when we miscalculate so much on drafting players. Does anyone know how our scouting department spend compares to other teams in the league? Are we penny pinching on scouting and is this reflected in our drafting?
I thought Macc revamped the entire scouting dept. with his hand picked guys. He really has no more excuses or fall guys to blame for his ineptitude should he fuck this draft up past the 1st rd.
I'm no Macc apologist and if he doesn't ace this draft he should go. I just wondered what actions the Jets are taking to correct their abysmal scouting/drafting policy. I would have thought that we would have committed more money - as its outside the salary cap - to getting some good talent evaluators in the organisation. Thats why I wondered what our scouting department spend was compared to other clubs.
The Jets haven’t had good scouting for as long as I can remember. They’ve had a few good drafts in 25 years. At least, that’s what it feels like. The fact that it hasn’t changed under Mac doesn’t bode well for his long term future with the team.
When Mac was hired he got ownership to revamp how the organization approached scouting, and to increase the effort, spend, and resources in that area. Remember scouting also goes beyond the 7 rounds, and includes pro personnel as well.
He also does well with undrafted FA's once the draft ends. It's almost as if his round 5-7 choices would be better off not picked at all, then signed later.
He's missed on too many round 2-4 picks as well. That needs to change fast or Darnold's rookie contract will be over before the team is ready to be a contender.
Mac has to stay away from these small school long shots ala Nickerson, Cannon, Shepherd, Fatucasi. He drafts like he wants to find the diamond in the rough in stead of going for more sure things.
Better he draft from Alabama Penn State Cal Clemson Michigan Ohio State Louisville Baylor Texas A & M. Right? It had NOTHING to do with schools. It has to do with talent that translates to the NFL.
To identify what the Jets problem is within scouting requires a much deeper analysis. There's some moving parts so without being behind the scenes it's hard to exactly identify the true issues. The lower level scouts are typically information gatherers who cast the wide net with initial player grades. However mainly what they're doing is filtering the preferred prospects up to the top scouts as in Director college scouting/personnel exec's/GM who get much more detailed & specific with grades/potential fit/positional rankings. As the process winds on through December the lower scouts jobs become more specific & fine tuned. The Senior Bowl,Combine, pro days digging through their contacts to try & figure out question marks in players, etc. The Jets are said to have a well respected group of lower level scouts. I think where they lack is developing any of them into top scouts who play a major part in shaping a team identity & architecture over several seasons. John Wooten with the Cowboys, Dick Hailey with Steelers,Eric Decosta Ravens. Jets have tried with more seasoned top scouts like Demoted Terry Bradway, Rex Hogan, Old Dick Hailey, etc. The Jets badly need to develop that guy in their college scouting/player personnel department. The team needs to take a long look at prototypes & what a Jet looks like. They've lacked an identity for far too long. They need to eliminate the gray area & get someone as voice beyond the GM that can provide some clarity in stacking a draft board as well as building a roster. That said...a scouting dept can grade players, stack a board & find fits till their blue in the face but if the GM follows his own conviction it all goes out the window for better or worse. Given the number of poor picks we all knew were bad picks as soon as they made them I'd venture to say thats been a source of the personnel issue. The decisions/strategies on draft day have been puzzling & questionable for far too long to be a coincidence. Player grades/draft boards differ greatly from team to team & it just seems like whatever the jets have been looking for in players to help shape their grades has not been working by any stretch.
Mac did revamp their scouting dept after the first year. And Leicester Jet brings up a great point - one I brought up before. The scouting dept does research the players and then makes their case to the GM who probably then sorts through all and makes his final cuts so to speak. You can say they’re not good at their jobs but MAC put them in place - he hired them. Mac is running out of the built in excuses ...
It really comes down to the mid round picks. Mac has hit on all his first rounders (I will include Leonard because he’s not a bust). Later rounds (5-7) haven’t been that bad considering it yielded the likes of Eli McGuire, Cannon, Shell, Peake (special teams), Lac Edwards, and Henry Anderson was acquired for a late pick. He really needs to change his approach in the middle rounds as I think it’s more a factor of decision making/draft strategy than scouting ability as he’s proven to find decent talent later. Hopefully worrying about one less position at QB Mac has freed up some of that time and effort to make sure he finds talent there.
ESPN recently had a pretty good article mostly about the in's and out's of the over emphasized combine, but it also touches about how imperfect and random drafting players can be : http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...se-dull-dread-here-really-happens-nfl-combine
How long have I been banging this drum??? That person IS NOT CHRIS JOHNSON!! All Chris should be doing is watching the games on Sundays, counting the profits and cutting checks for salaries. Let a REAL FOOTBALL PERSON do the football stuff.
