Nobody is a sure thing and that question is very difficult to answer because we don't know who will be available at no. 6. BUT I'll take a stab..... There's nobody really that jumps out at the level of those players you are mentioning, yes, but it's also fair to note that Mariota doesn't look like Peyton Manning or John Elway or Andrew Luck as prospects either. So your post is a quite unfair - when looking at the other players we shouldn't have compare them to the greatest prospects of all time to determine whether we want them over Mariota. I'll say the 2 WRs, particular Cooper who I especially like, has equal or less question marks as prospects for their position than Mariota. They both might be better players available at 6.. There are good players in that block of OLB/DE combo-type players that are projected around no.6, some I like more than others, and some I think are better prospects at their position than Mariota, some I don't. Dante Fowler for example, possibly available at 6, I think is a better prospect if we are position agnostic. However- the Jets shouldn't be position agnostic. QB is the most important position by far and oh, it just so happens to be a major need. So that should give Mariota the nod, but I will listen to counter arguments for other players and I wouldn't even burn Woody Johnson's house down if they look at Mariota and pass.
I'm not suggesting folks need to accept my opinion as gospel, but the question I posed was about "sure things". We can't take Mariota because he isn't a "sure thing". I guess that means we're passing up a "sure thing" at another position. There is not one other player in the top 10-12 prospects that I look at as franchise changing, once in a decade, sure thing prospect at any other position. So if we can' take Mariota because he isn't a "sure thing", why are we taking anyone else at that spot that isn't a "sure thing"? Mind you, I like Cooper but he doesn't appear to me to be any more of a sure thing than Mariota and there could be a better WR or two in this draft. I just don't get the logic of it. _
The 2 QBs should be #1 & #2 on our board. If either one is available we must take them. IMO they'll both be off the board by the time we choose
It doesn't matter if they can't miss..ask yourself this, do you want to spend another year with Smith or take a chance one of these guys is the real deal? Assuming of course one of them would be available at 6 which I highly doubt. There are at least two GMs in this league who are willing to take that chance.
evojoe67 said: ↑ WTF does " the Jet are not in the mood to take Mariota at #6", mean LOL I had to do a double take at this too.........the one thing that will NOT be a factor in regards to the Jets taking Mariota will be somebody's 'mood'.......LOL
If the Jets make this deal, it needs to be for a lot of early draft picks. Foles will probably be included in this rumored deal, but I wouldn't take him if it costs the team a higher draft choice. La'el Collins, Bud Dupree, Parker, and DGB would be my targets.
Foles would be a good piece in the deal but not in place of the 2 1st rounders. He's established that he can play in the NFL but he hasn't established that he can play in a normal pro set.
I has to be 2015 swap 2015 2nd 2016 1st 2017 1st Chip Kelly only cares about building a strong OL and having his QB. Everything else in his system offensively is plug and play. For the Eagles defensively they can build around the Cox, Alonso, Kendricks. They also have a ton of cap space right now. They are the team that can afford to make this trade
Given the huge value differential between pick 6 and pick 20 a practical question would be whether the Eagles have any players under contract that we would want in addition to draft picks. Thoughts?
There is of course no 100% Guarantee and one season lost to injury with Clowney is just a little premature on saying that it didn't work out. Even IF Clowney never takes another snap we'd never know if he would have been a superstar or a flop in the NFL, Injuries are unpredictable and can derail any career....especially a running QB's career. So if calling Clowney a pick that didn't work out then Mariota has a fairly high probability of injury as a running QB, never mind questions about his ability to adapt to the NFL or the time line of his learning curve. Now that said, If the Jets get a really rich offer to trade down with Mariota on the board does it guarantee this years first pick will be a star? No, but gaining multiple high picks vastly improves the chances of getting one or more true star player. Drafting is, by it's nature, an inexact science and the more you can diversify and increase your pool of picks the greater your chance of hitting on one, if not multiple, picks. If the Jets are extremely certain Mariota is the man then no, they shouldn't trade down. But if the Jets aren't sold on him they should explore opportunities to expand their potential. It's always dangerous when you fall so in love with a player that you're blind to other possibilities. The biggest mistakes on draft day are made by being subjective rather than objective in evaluation of not only a certain player but by having tunnelvision that blocks seeing other options that may be more beneficial....especially for a team that is more than 2 or 3 parts short of being a good team.
First of all, I don't believe any draft related rumors for a hot minute, certainly not this one. If it was true, the trade some are mentioning is just not nearly enough. We best be getting more than the Rams got to even consider it, a lot more.
Mychal Kendricks. ILB - very good cover linebacker - I wonder if we could get him also. Everyone mentions Foles as well.
Exactly.... "if no on else fits that mold of a sure thing, why are we taking anyone at 6" That's why I'm hoping we trade out to get more picks later and in future years.
Yes ...No one on this Board sees the Forrest because the Trees are in the way! WHY DOES KELLY WANT MARIOTTA??? HE IS VERY TALENTED WITH HUGH UPSIDE. We need 2 QBs one from FA one from draft!!!
Jets hopefully DO NOT take a Snake and FIsh Oil deal like this. Foles is ok and played well.He showed flashes but what if more body parts break and he , of course, is not getting any younger. This better be a smokescreen by our FO. MM has brilliant skills and big upside....don't pass that up
If this "trade" is possible I would pull the trigger without blinking. I'm not sold on Mariota and I am one of the few that still thinks Geno can be a good qb. I want more draft picks/more high draft picks to build this team. At 20 we go BPA and then with possibly two 2nd rounders we can really upgrade this team. I just don't want to walk out of this draft without a WR taken in the first three rounds preferably round one or two
Mariota best succeeds in the Eagles offense w/ Chip. That doesn't mean he's the right QB for every other team. Titans may pass on Mariota. There's a reason.
