i'd be willing to let vilma come back if this wasn't the last year in his contract. i just don't see him resigning with us. he's gonna want 04-05 jon vilma money and we're gonna wanna pay him 06-07 jon vilma money. so i say trade him if we can get something for him, even if it turns out to be another anthony schlegal it's better then nothing
No it's not, it's the equivlent to nothing. Let's see how Vilma recovers and plays before we give him away for nothing. If he's no good we don't resign him, if he's good we do.
We don't have to trade Vilma. If we can get a 1st or a good 2nd round pick, I would move him, but otherwise, keeping him is probably the best bet, unless his rehab isn't coming along well.
so you'd be willing to give him the money he's gonna want for what 100 tackles maybe 1 sack and a forced fumble? i'd rather plug another barton in there then end up over paying for a vet past his prime. (wayne, curtis, drob, ellis, chad...)
I dont know if he'll go ape shit for money unless he has a good season in which case we should re-sign him.
My thought is that if this team is terrible this season and Mangini gets canned, at the very worst, we have an excellent young middle linebacker in Harris and Vilma can play the weak side. You simply don't quit on players as committed and talented as Jonathan Vilma. -X-
hmmm, i don?t think that there?s any way that Vilma can play OLB in the 34. What positions would that leave open for him? Safety? Is he really quick enought to play Safety? and more importantly, is he willing to learn a totally new position in his contract year? Nickel/Dime LB? He?s too good to only be out there in certain situations, and i doubt he wants to ride the bench, especially in his contract year. Other than ILB the best way to use him is as trade bait...
We're a year away from having to make that call, so let's make it with the knowledge and information that the next year will bring. See how he recovers, see how he plays, see what he wants and what we have under the cap. Why just assume the worst and jump the gun now, and give him up for nothing?
Here's the crux of the Vilma isssue: Do you want him for one more year? He will be a UFA after this season and not under contract. He does not really fit our defensive scheme, he needs to be in a 4-3. He will leave to go to a 4-3 after this year. If we do not trade him, we will get nothing for him. Is he worth losing a 2nd or 3rd round pick this year just for one more season?
First of all, the man is (was) a top 5, 4-3 MLB. (I say was because we don't know the extent of his injury. If he fully recovers, he is worth a lot to a 4-3 team. Second of all, He had 1.5 years to prove what he can do in our system and it didn't work. We should get all we can for him now, provided it is in the first three rounds. Given the choice between a year of mediocre play or a 2nd or 3rd round draft choice...I take the draft choice. Assuming we will fczk up the pick just because we drafted one bust in the third round last year out of all our picks is just ridiculous. A third round pick is still a good value.
i?m with you, because i don?t think he wants to stay in a 34 after his Rookie contract, but we could still franchise him next year (only of course if we don?t need the Tag as a "negotiation tool" for Rhodes). We could also still trade him after we franchised him (you can trade a franchised player, for whatever you want, right), but that would mean, we would get a pick in 2010 instead of 2008. If i would be Tanny, i would talk to him about a new deal right now, and see how he responds, if he shows the will to stay here, give him a new deal and put all those things to rest, if not, deal him before the draft. but on the other hand, offering a player, that is hurt and doesn?t fit the system and didn?t benifit the team that much, due to that, a big long term contract a hole year before his current contract expires doesn?t seem like a smart move, either. this is really a fucked up situation.
I'd rather take the chance and see what he can do playing alongside David Harris. That's the difference from the first year and a half he was here in the 3-4 with Mangini. Harris takes a lot of pressure off of Vilma, you have a chance to have a really dynamic corps of LBs, but you have to give it a shot. Even if it doesn't work, trying it is still worth more to me than a draft pick who may or may not be anything.
Yup not bad at all. Hopefully he can come back as close to his old self as he can after such an injury. Besides, if he was traded this off season, what kind of value can you get in return for him? The team is probably better off keeping him unless someone comes over with an offer that the FO can't refuse.
Who said the Jets can only get a draft pick for him? Seems to me they could get a veteran in return. The Broncos need a MLB. They played D.J. Williams in the middle this season, but he's better on the outside. Their OLBs were awful. Javon Walker doesn't want to be there anymore. I'm just sayin'. All that said, let the record show that at this particular time I have no good idea what the Jets should do with Vilma. The Jets apparently do not even know what is the best way to handle this yet.
That would be more acceptable to me, but given the risk/reward I'd rather keep Vilma. The risk is losing out on a draft choice or an unhappy veteran, the reward might be a great LB tandem for the next 5-10 years. Worth a shot.
How about this as a series of reasonable hypotheticals in the Case of the Injured Vilma: the front office knew, even before every fan was screaming he was a poor fit, that Vilma was not going to be a good 3-4 ILB. Maybe they thought he'd turn the corner in his second year, but surely by the time he was hurt they knew he was never going to be a good 3-4 ILB. So then he gets hurt, but it's not really that bad of an injury, let's say it's a partial tear of a knee ligament. Now they say to themselves: look, next year is his contract year, we KNOW we're not going to resign him, so we're going to have to trade him this offseason. We have three choices: continue to play him and hurt the team, bench him and hurt his trade value or put him on IR. Obviously, the casual fan thinks that the injury lowers his trade value, but actual, real professional teams rely on their doctor's evaluations, not just some stupid classification like "he was put on IR" so the doctors will be able to look at the injury and give it the ok because they can see that the injury is not serious, so while options A and B do in fact hurt his trade value, putting him on IR does not. So they put him on IR, fully expecting to trade him for full value this offseason. Is that so farfetched?
No, not at all, and thats what I was suspicious of when the whole thing went down. The whole interview with Beningo on WFAN was just too weird. He was saying he wasnt injured and he could have played, and then the next week he's out for the season on IR. I thought it was possible that the groundwork for a trade had basically been worked out with another team and part of that deal was just to keep him off the field and get him whatever surgery he needed or whatever it was. I'm not sure if that's what went down but that's my conspiracy theory
Just curious, which quote tells you he may be traded? This one: or this one? Because that's the only quote that refers to Vilma.
I'm personally in the camp that believes that Vilma can flourish in the 3-4 if we get a damn adequate line in front of him here. I also think with Harris doing what he did this season next to him for next season as well as someone opposite Thomas in the pass rush (and moving Thomas back to his side from 2006) that he'll have fewer blockers concened with him and thus be more open to make plays. Seriously, draft Gholston in the 1st, Dre Moore or someone else for 3-4 end in the early 2nd(Kentwaan Balmer as well as a few others fit the bill here too), sign either Ethan Kelly or the guy from SF (whose name escapes me) to rotate with Pouha at NT and shift D-Rob to DE and I think we've got a pretty damn good front 7 in the making. Moore-Pouha-Robertson Thomas-Vlima-Harris-Gholston With Barton being brought in for some downs at ILB, Ellis and Coleman in the DE rotation (if we don't release or trade Ellis' ass), one of the guys above in the NT rotation, as well as Bowens coming in every once in a whileto give an OLB a rest. All this gives us a very talented front 7 with people who will also take up blockers around Vilma and allow him to make the plays he once made in the 4-3. If we can grab someone like Gay in the offseason as well and resign Poteat in addition to all this I think we're set on D.
