Not so long ago, there was this quote: Quote: "...I never understood the deep ball knock on Chad. He is deadly accurate with his deep balls. They're always right on the money, where only the receiver can catch it. You don't really see receivers having to adjust to or wait for Chad's deep balls...." In the second or third game this year, Chad throws a 40 yard fly that LC catches over his shoulder in stride for a touchdown. This happens at the very beginning of the game before the pass rush has had a chance to take over and the DBs can confidently sit on the short routes because all they're giving the NYJs is 1.3 seconds now. The announcers were stunned into silence by this because both of them had just been talking about Chad's lack of arm strength. Later on in the season, before the switch to Kellen, in the waning seconds of another meaningless now-out-of-reach game, the NYJ CS instructed Chad to throw one "Hail Mary" after another from the 50 yard line, until Cotch catches one 50 yards in the air high arch "Hail Mary" finally on fourth down for a meaningless touchdown with less than 10 seconds to play. Now the fact that the NYJ CS are trying to make some kind of statement with these "Hail Mary's" at the end of this game is not remarked on by the announcers who are anxious to "get on with it". But the NYJ CS had a reason to say something about Chad with these calls. If he had had a true "spaghetti arm" none of those "Hail Mary's" from the 50 yard line at the end of a long, fruitless game would have made it down there. The fact that they all did and Cotch finally caught one for TD was what the CS was looking for: "This one's not on you Chad." "You're sitting down, now, Chad, because there's nothing you can do to overcome what's wrong with this team and win. You're sitting down, now, Chad, because we have to get Kellen in the game and build up his experience. Be a team player, Chad. It's not your fault alone." And he did just that, he took eight of them on the bench for the NYJ. He worked his butt off on every play and made damned sure that Kellen got the benefit of it. All the players had their eyes on him. All the time. He was the captain for all sixteen games, and he rode the sidelines and stayed in the game as best he could. The team remarked on his steadfastness. And they were each steadfast throughout that fruitless season, and one of the reasons they were was Chad. Chad made them understand that they all owed it to Kellen to hang in there and do everything they could think of to win, even if they didn't last time, or this time, or next time. I'm sure a lot of us were thinking the whole time, "What's the point?" I think that's what Mangini was looking for.
If the guy is nervous about his ability he is going to fail in NYC big time and Mangini and Tannenbaum will be fired. If the Jets make a move in the draft for Flacco or Ryan or try and get Quinn you can bet Clemens is already done.
Of course. Because every QB should be judged on the first 1 1/2 years of actual playtime. my advice...you should have worn a helmet.
Very good post. Your right. Chad handled what happened and exceeded anyone's expectations - IMO. With the line we have now (assuming a good RT fill) even Chad would do infinitely better next year. The question is, is Kellen's intangibles enough to really improve us provided Kellen shows us that he really can command the game mentally? We will find out. Part of me says, I would like Chad to stay only because he does guarantee a spirited competition in training camp between him and Clemens. It will by no means be easy for Clemens to win the job. The only sad part is, somebody has to take second best. If it ended up being Clemens as #2, I would not feel too bad because Clemens still has youth and he still could eventually be a great #1. Chad, on the other hand, I would feel a little bad for if he had to ride the pine only because his years to be successful and have a SB run are dwindling fast. This is almost why I would rather see him get traded this off-season. He still can get it done and could really help another team out who needs a seasoned starting QB. I think we could get a 2nd round pick for Chad (OK, maybe a 3rd), but all in all, not too bad, considering. If we traded Chad we would have a slight predicament. We would need to bring in somebody half way decent to compete for the starting job, but who is out there that would be a really good challenge for Clemens. I don't think there is really anyone out there that fits that description very well. Right now, I think Chad is staying because between he or Clemens having a great camp; they together give us the best possibility of going into the season with a groomed QB. The only thing is this...................????? What if the FO wasn't exactly thrilled with everything they have seen with Clemens and have made up their mind that the Jets could be thinking in a different direction. Could a trade of Clemens be looming? "Wow, I didn't see that coming", a lot would say, but it is not impossible. We could trade Clemens for a probable third rounder and then use our #6 to get a front running QB that we may have really liked in the combine and feel that after a year of grooming will definitely be able to take over. In this case, Chad would be our guy next year. If you look at all we have aggressively done in FA so far; it points three ways: 1) We are happy with Clemens and just want to give him better tools that may even include drafting McFadden 2) We trade Clemens and draft a new QB at #6 and Chad likely gets the start for '08 3) We just want McFadden or Gholston and feel OK about Chad and Kellen fighting for the starting role. The simple fact that Chad is still here does not take 1) or 2) out of play.
When will this Pennington nonsense end? The guy is done, He went 1-8 as a starter (or something like that) last season, couldnt ever get the team into the end zone, has no arm, no legs, hes turnover prone, and at age 32- hes only gonna get worse.
KeepChad&Kellen and GreenHornet- Let's not make believe that Chad could fing the pigskin 50 yds in the air at will. I can count on one hand how many times he actually hit a reciever IN STRIDE on balls 20 yds or further. WRs consistantly had to adjust...either stopping and waiting for the ball, and then getting caught from behind, or literally turning a fly or post into a buttonhook. I like Chad, and can't knock him for being a bad QB...but the man had and still has, and has always had limitations. We all do, it's part of being human. But his arm stregnth has always been questionable.
Well, thanksfully it's Mangini who will make the decision and not you:jets:If he wasn't capable,he wouldn't be here to get his shot in TC. It's really amazing. Chad gets downed because of his play last year (behind a shit line) and Clemens get the confidence after looking like one of the shittiest QBs weve had since Rick Mirer(behind a shit line). If our professional coaching staff saw what the dillusional arm chair QB people saw here in Clemens,He would be declared starting QB of the Jets without a doubt(kinda like Chad was after taking over in 02. Not happening though. Clemens sucks
Wow you actually know nothing. Write this down, this is an absolute guarantee- Clemens is the starting quarterback for 08. And if the Jets have it their way, hell be on another team at the start of training camp.
I had no idea you worked for the Jets fron office, sorry. Please don't pass your opinions off as guarantees and tell others that they know nothing.
Won ONE GAME--lost 3 others by himself. Cannot throw. Is afraid of the rush. Why are we wasting our time talking about him? He will be dealt. After June 1. Mark my words.
Another point. The Jets are not spending all this money to hand their destiny to a piece of broken china like Chad.
All QBs have limitations. There are no supermen in the NFL. Well, "broken piece of china" is your opinion, jdon, and of course you're entitled to it. I point out that the CS still plans on having a competition for QB between Chad and Kellen, and should they actually follow through with what they have said, then that'd indicate a different opinion of Chad.
This is a function of the 07 OL -- and the results that Kellen had was because of the 07 OL as well. I don't think it's really viable to try and judge either QB behind this 07 OL.
Really? Because I doubt they are spending all of this money to hand their destiny to someone who flat out sucked ass. It's not gonna be Chad? fine, but it's not gonna be Clemens either. But for 08,IMO it's gonna be Chad, not Clemens.
With the Shitty O line working against both QBs,Kellen Clemens got pulled for Chad late in the season. Yeah,he got hurt but he was ready to go before the season was over. Not exactly what i would expect to see if the staff thought Clemens was the future.
The CS don't appear to share this opinion. We'll see if they really go ahead and have this competition between the QBs behind this new OL that they are building.
With the offensive line the Jets are looking like they will field this year...KC is the guy. The one thing you do not need with a qb that makes most of his passes within 7 yards from the line of scrimmage is a great offensive line. The difference between Chad not having the time and KC not having the time is that with Chad...MOST of his potential options were open to him because he releases the ball so quickly. He isnt the type of guy that needs to sit in the pocket for 5 or 6 seconds because defensive coverage doesnt have to worry about him deep (yeah yeah..I remember the 3 bombs he has thrown over the last 4 years...spare me). With KC, protection will only help him and give him what ALL OTHER QBS IN THE NFL have...options anywhere on the football field. Average qb's with protection become above average qb's...not to mention the improvement in the running game. Defenses that stack the line against Chad will do so with a poor offensive line..or a great one. It makes no difference. Dont get me wrong, Chad could win with a great offensive line...but the Jets will be the Jets...no quick strikes...plodding more successfully down the field then before...still troubled greatly in the red zone...I mean you can see how the season will turn out with Chad at qb. KC is a huge question mark...but at least he makes the offense have more options..and the defenses must respect a guy that might not be able to make an accurate throw..but can at least beat a team anywhere on the field if given the time...which makes your running game that much better. Its the thing that those that defend Chad will never understand about those that dont like him. Nothing personal...strictly business Frado.
You should remember this, also: "...In the second or third game this year, Chad throws a 40 yard fly that LC catches over his shoulder in stride for a touchdown. This happens at the very beginning of the game before the pass rush has had a chance to take over and the DBs can confidently sit on the short routes because all they're giving the NYJs is 1.3 seconds now. The announcers were stunned into silence by this because both of them had just been talking about Chad's lack of arm strength...." Chad has said more than once this season that he has confidence that he can make all the throws he is asked to. The CS must have confidence that he can make all the throws that he is asked to, or else they would not be talking about another competition for QB behind this new OL this year.
Chad may be able to throw the ball 50 yards down field, but he can't throw to the sideline. He went out of his way to prove that to anyone who watched last season.
