A big part of the problem as far as sustaining success goes, has been this team's complete inability to get a franchise quarterback who can last more than a few seasons. We have had good quarterbacks, but never for an eight- or ten- or 12-year period that might have led to the sort of sustained success we see other teams enjoy. Todd, O'Brien, Pennington, Sanchez and now Darnold... we've made some efforts to find that guy, but injury or lack of talent has always derailed them. We have tried stop-gaps too many times. Esiason, O'Donnell, Testaverde, Favre, Fitzpatrick... they all had flashes, but even if they'd been great they wouldn't have lasted more than a few years. We don't seem to have really committed to finding that guy. It's one of the reasons with this Trevor Lawrence situation is so frustrating. He might have been the one.
