Kyle Wilson would be above average on a predominantly zone/cover 2 team (e.g., the Bears). He just not a good press CB which makes him a bad fit for a rex Ryan defense.
that is quite a strawman you are constructing. being a bad player, or in Wilson's case likely an average player, does not mean a complete absence of ever making a good play. good players make them with frequency, average players have infrequent moments, and bad players very rare moments. a team defense can excel because, as a team, they can mask the deficiencies of their weakest players. so, no, I never said that his output has been completely absent of a good play here or there, because that isn't what it means to not be good. your argument is that good numbers, from a team standpoint, can not be put up if there is a bad player on the team. the history of the NFL kind of disputes that. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl, the ultimate team accomplishment, with pretty average individual statistics. how the fuck is that possible to achieve the greatest accomplishment in a season possible if he did not play great? because it is a team game.
As far as I'm concerned Kyle Wilson's legacy with the Jets will always be letting that ball hit him in the face in that AFC title game in Pittsburgh. I never viewed him as anything more than a nickel and you don't waste 1st round picks on nickel backs. He was a case of luxury pick over best player available. I don't think they cut him but he'll have to play out of his mind in order to be brought back next season.
If he got a starting job as an outside CB on another team it would only be because he played for Rex and that counts for something. 2 weeks of getting burned, multiple PI calls and show boating for no reason, he would no longer start. Your right its a team game. But if every other player around him was ranked as lowly as they were other than Cromartie, he can't be too bad. There was games here and there where you would see him making mistakes, but in most games you didn't notice him, and that's a good thing.
Darrin Walls was a big time CB recruit at Notre Dame. Okay in college, but never became anything more than just a serviceable starter.

If he's the 4th best CB, as you said, why on earth would you cut him? There are many times throughout the game where you need to go to the 4th and 5th CBs on the roster. Cutting him to send a message would go against the competition idea. Not playing him except in those sub-packages would be more in line
Yeah Wilson should hold the nickel spot while if Cro or Millner has to take plays or games off for whatever reasons, Walls, Trufant, and Lankster should fill in there. I don't think cutting Wilson is the right answer, but I wouldn't keep him on outside receivers.
Wilson ain't going anywhere. He's decent in the slot but sometimes gets burned on the outside. He gets picked on, but has handled it well overall. People only remember bad plays, that's the problem. They don't account for the dozens of plays where he has tight coverage on his man and the QB has to force it elsewhere. Just because you don't hear his name, doesn't mean he didn't impact the game. He would indeed start on most NFL teams. #2 pass D without Revis? Wilson had nothing to do with it?
We didn't exactly have a monster pass rush or great coverage safeties, so I don't know how Kyle Wilson would get masked. Talib is a lot more talented, but I wouldn't say better. I'd rather have Wilson than all 3. For as many picks as Arrington and Talib get, they allow twice as many TDs. I remember the first game Talib played for the Patriots last year, he got a pick-6 early. Everyone talked about that, but nobody mentioned the 2 or 3 TDs that he single handily gave to the other team.
