What number are you going for? Good posts so far: http://forums.theganggreen.com/search.php?searchid=413750
Apropos of nothing, I just double-checked this interesting fact. 18 of our 53 players on the active roster were undrafted free agents. That's just over a third. I don't think it's a coincidence that some of the more physical stars on this squad (Brandon Moore, T-Rich, Bart Scott, Jimmy Leonhard) had to fight their way up from the bottom. That sets such a great example for the remainder of the third.
And I was trying to say he'll be a solid contributor, but never an ace. That is Woodhead's story. He will always contribute, but he'll always be a minor role player. I think there is a chance Washington may get cut for Coles, but I'm no longer 100% convinced Coles will come back. I just think Westoff is going to put his foot down and demand that he not lose any more special teamers at all. Ryan said that to Coles long before they sat down and made the final cuts. Westoff has a major say in the final roster decisions. I don't think he wants to lose either Washington or Clowney for a WR who will only be rostered for 3 weeks. If in fact that is his position, I agree with him.
Going forward you may see this # increase. They touched on it in Hard Knocks. With the Jets star players getting big contracts that is putting added pressure to find cheap alternatives for depth. Thankfully this staff and FO have had a good track record finding them. If a new CBA gets done and a rookie wage scale put in place Tannenbaum might begin to stockpile picks again.
I'm just happy that these four guys didn't get cut: Four who made the cut were veteran RBs Danny Woodhead and Chauncey Washington and two rookies, CB Brian Jackson and TE Jeff Cumberland, all of whom used their good summers to make the team's Active/Inactive list.
Cumberland looks to have immense physical tools. All camp long you heard him making incredible catches and such. The weird thing is they really didn't throw to him much in the preseason games. I hope it is because they plan on playing him to surprise other teams. Although that is unlikely. If he ever learns how to block adequately he could be really dangerous. Anyway, he will be a great dvelopemental guy. The Jets have been looking at tons of ex basketball players and such. Maybe they finally uncovered a gem.
Clowneys gone for Coles after week 1 This is what Tannenbaum said about David clowney (it's in mehta's blog at the daily news): ON DAVID CLOWNEY: If he can become more consistent in the kicking game even replacing a guy like Wallace Wright, then the security will be enhanced. With that said, he provides an explosive element for us. We’re moving forward with him. What happens after that, we’ll see. It sounds like they're not too pleased by his inconsistency on ST and the "what happens after that, we'll see" sure sounds like he's gone after week 1 when they bring back Coles. It's also the right move if they decide they want Coles and they need to cut someone.
In my opinion Tanny saying "what happens after that, we'll see" means that they will see what happens after that.
Tanny said in the latest Vrentas article that the team will try to make some moves via the waivers... The roster as it stands now is likely not how it will look on opening day. Waiver claims are due tomorrow at noon, and Tannenbaum said he expected the Jets would make some. They could be looking for defensive or offensive linemen, linebackers or a special-teams ace. Tannenbaum added that the roster is about 2,000 to 3,000 calories from being finalized, referring to the snacking that would go on as they met late into the night. Five running backs -- Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson, Joe McKnight, Danny Woodhead and Chauncey Washington -- are currently on the roster, though Woodhead also plays receiver. Tannenbaum cited Washington's physical running style and special teams production as reasons why they kept him, and also said QB Mark Sanchez praised his pass protection dating back to their days at USC.
Washington is obviously insurance against Greene getting hurt at some point during the regular season. My guess is that the CS doubted seriously if Washington would have cleared to be placed on the PS as RB's with his style seem to be all the rage these days. I'm thinking Washington needs to show what he can do with the "ones" as I think he would surprise alot of folks and could extend the "ground & pound" late into the 4th qtr and the season on whole.
No chance. At this point, every player we pick up, we have to make a cut. Washington's not going to be clearly better than Clowney.
The Jets cut Tony Richardson. What a shocker. They also cut Clowney, and Chauncey Washington. They picked up Patrick Brown from Minnesota, Marcus Dixon from Dallas, and Patrick Turner from Miami.
Solid moves. Of course our roster for the second game could look very different since they will probably bring back Tony.
