Hindsight is 20/20 but given how the draft fell the Jets probably could have stayed at 6 and still gotten Darnold. The Colts weren't taking him at 3, the Browns weren't doing it at 4, the Broncos weren't doing it at 5 and given how the draft fell it's unlikely to have changed the draft fall, the colts still would have taken Quentin at 3, the Browns still would have taken who they took at 4, the Broncos still would have stayed where they were to take who they took (they backed out of a deal because he was still on the board.)....the Jets still could have had Darnold, in theory, and still had their 2nd round picks....but it's all hindsight now....but it's why I don't like making deals that early....

In darnold second season he lost 3 starting offensive lineman from the yr before and jj schuster-Smith. I honest,y believe he is more of his first yr. we of all, people know what it’s like to have three offensive lineman are new and
    can’t play

Turnovers don't bother me as long as there's more much more TDS than turnovers.

That's been the main problem around here lotsa lotsa lotsa turnovers, three & outs $#%@ play and not nearly enough TDS and big plays.

as long as Darnold is 2-1or better in TDS-turnovers ratio he'll be fine.

Do you honestly think some other team wouldn’t have possibly traded up with the browns or even colts for that matter to take darnold if we didnt. It’s a gamble we had to take

Like I said, Hindsight is 20/20.
But reports are that the Bills had tried to trade down to the Browns 4th and the price was too steep. They had a deal with the Broncos but the Bronco's backed out because Chubb was there and they weren't about to trade out from that. The Colts MIGHT have traded back to 12 from 3, but if the price for 4 was too high for the Bills 3 almost assuredly was as well.

has to do with the way the draft fell, as soon as the Browns passed on Chubb at 4 the Bronco's weren't about to move.

Disagree. Someone else would’ve traded up to the #3 if Darnold was still there. And probably the Broncos at 5 also. Doubt they would’ve passed on him.

Yeah, I would be shocked if Darnold would have lasted to 6. Someone would have overpaid. In actuality, I'm sure that #3 pick was worth a whole lot more than the Jets paid for it after the Browns picked Mayfield and even more so after the Giants picked Barkley. If the Jets tried make that trade tonight, they would have probably paid way more.

Colts weren’t staying at 3 . I think it safe to say darnold was going at 3 just a matter of to whom. That said, I would have rather had Rosen and the extra picks but I am not going to kill mac for it.
He better be right about Sam though

    May not be accurate.
If we didn't trade, Colts probably would have taken Chubb at 3, leading the Broncos to maybe select Rosen.

    Durability though, my dude. Durability.

I preferred Rosen to Darnold on the field, but it would have really sucked holding my breath every time Rosen hung in the pocket too long. I'm good with Darnold.

    Don’t worry guys.....

Let’s see if the jets try to get back into round 2.....with the cap space we have, it’s ok to burn a pick or 2 and move up. As long as we spend the cap money wisely in free agency.

Such great Luck. I vividly remember the day 2 years ago watching Darnold play Penn State.

I was at the gym and I said to myself...

    We need this guy.

2 years later, I got what I asked for.

Better or worse, I asked for this and I got it.

You might make an argument for #3, but the browns had asked for more than the bills were willing to trade and i suspect the same story with #3. We know for a fact that Denver has confirmed that there was a deal with the bills but the broncos backed out when Chubb was still on the board...so no, the bronco's weren't trading back at that point. So maybe, maybe, the Colts trade back to 11 or 12, but I doubt they would have done it for less than the Browns at #4 and the browns were too rich for the Bills.
And the Bills were hard on for Allan so.......

here's what we know, the Browns didn't trade back on either of their picks, the giants didn't trade back, and the Bronco's backed out of a pre-agreed deal so they could grab Chubb who fell to them. The only question mark at that point, and only variable, is the Colts and they needed O-line help so badly to keep Luck on his feet i doubt they would have risked trading back to 11-12 and pass on the best OL in the draft.

    It's all academic of course.

Of all the recent USC QBs, Darnold is the youngest (others were Junior or Seniors coming out) and interestingly if you only look at the ones drafted in the first round, he's the only one that USC wasn't ranked in the top 10 in his final season.

The last thing this team needs is a fading egomaniac who demands the ball thrown his way. Dez is all but done in this league

You got a point about his ego actually but he can help a young QB and I won’t mind him if price is right.

At this point in his career he’s a more talented and more volatile version of Kearse. We don’t need Dez’s me first attitude in the locker room right now. With Williams and Adams we have two good young leaders supported by McCown. Sam is really walking into a great situation with all that support. No sense in getting something to counter that IMO.

It was a good pick although I liked Rosen better. My second team happens to be the Cardinals since I moved to AZ. If you looked at what AZ gave up to get Rosen, the Jets look like absolute dopes. AZ moved to 10 and gave up their 15th a 3rd and a 5th and got Rosen.

You need the QB and if Darnold works out it won't matter. The reality is the Jets didn't just move up with a terrible value trade. They got arguably the 5th best player in the draft at 3. Personally I think Cleveland at 1 and 4 completely screwed up. Even if you think Mayfield was the best QB in this draft, he was at best the 4th best player in this draft. You can't have the 1st and 4th pick and not get at least one of the two highest graded players in the draft.

I was never a huge Steve Keim fan but after last year being outmaneuvered by both Houston and KC he remained patient and got arguably the first, 2nd or 3rd best QB in this draft depending on your POV and he got him without over drafting him or giving up to much value for him. That's how to play NFL GM.
