Execlent post Edge. I could not possibly agree more. Anyone who really wants to get on the front office for picking Schlegel at this point is nitpicking. All in all I'm very happy at the progress we've made and feel we have the right people in place (coach, GM, Ect.) I have my fears that our record may take a step back, but over all the team is moving in the right direction.
Exactly. I always feel the true barometer of talent evaluation from a GM/scouting staff standpoint is getting late round value, ability to sift through the junk heap. In only two years with Tangini, we've found two excellent 4th round talents in Brad Smith and Leon Washington, both important contributors, Drew Coleman who has a role in cornback depth, Pociak who was hurt last year but looked pretty good in preseason and made the roster, Jacob Bender this year who has the potential, even if he's being forced into the lineup early and Stuckey, a 7th round steal and should be returning punts on day one a could play a role in multiple receive sets. Add these late round gems to the early round success of Mangold, Clemens, D-brick (jury still out a bit on him) and Revis/Harris (haven't proven it in real games yet, but both look to have big roles on Defense this year), and you can certainly forgive the Schlegal transgression. I think Mangini was so in love with character and intangibles that it blinded him a bit to Schelegals physical shortcomings, something I'm sure they've analyzed as a talent evaluation team 1000 times over and I'd be shocked if there isn't an official "5 key things we learned from the Schlegal over-reach" document in every scout's hands as we speak!
My problem with the Schlegel pick was the hype. It was, " were smarter than everybody else." All they kept saying was "he made more plays than AJ Hawk," and "he hunts wild boars." AJ Hawk has not been cut and Schlegel will have plenty of time to hunt wild boars now.
That was a typical move by Herm, he would keep guys around way longer than they needed to be. Glad to see these guys say we messed up and this guys sucks so good riddance.
Credit where credit is due. This is an excellent post and I think there is quite a lot of reality there. I would be shocked if the mistake was not analyzed to death and made sure they do not ever repeat it. Of course you can not prevent a mistake in the draft but these guys will do everything in their power to make sure it does not happen often/ if ever again.
im not so much as mad at tangini for the pick as i am mad at the many posters on this board who after last season still contended that schlegel would be a valuable contributor this year. of course now they are nowhere to be found.
I was hoping for Michigan DT Gabe Watson in the 3rd round -I see he starts for Arizona but don't know if he's doing much.
It's good that I'm not picking for the team- my guy, Max Jean Gilles, is an absolute bust for the Eagles.
Well, now there was Parcells, Snagging Abe,Ellis,Penny, and Becht, all in the first round. or 2007. Thomas Jones by swapping 2nds, Revis, Harris,Bender, Stuckey. All of whom will see Substantial action this season.
That was an awful pick but this organization has done an AMAZING job at drafting the past 2 years. I hardly consider one failed pick anything less then a small mistake when taking into considering the quality of players they picked around him.
Interesting stat last night...only four plays on the Colts roster have ever played for another team...wow!
Parcells getting the four picks was what was brilliant. Unfortunately that draft wasn't the best one we've had. Abe had ability to be one of the greats in the league, but he couldn't stay healthy and had a shitty attitude. Ellis has been solid, but he's never lived up to expectations. Penny has been solid, but he's another who hasn't been able to stay healthy. Becht sucked. In all honesty, Coles in the third round was the best pick of that draft. The jury is out on this year's draft. If Bender plays well and Stuckey makes contributions (aside from Revis and Harris being successful), then this will have been a great draft.
i would have liked to see them put him on the PS. the kid has a lot of upside, and he played well for a big time program in college. i wouldnt be shocked if he turned out to be a decent player. i dont think you can call him a bust after a year or 2, sometimes it takes a bit to get acclimated to the nfl game.
Those quotes were never made by the front office, rather the media. The only thing Mangini said was that whenever he was watching OS games, the guy was always around the ball. Tannebaum was the same way. Nobody thought he was better than AJ Hawk. Please, many here, myself included if you want to go back and check the posts, thought Hawk should have been the 4th overall pick. All front offices make mistakes, the good ones move on from those mistakes sooner, rather than later....
Listen, Shlegel was brought in to be a "lead blocker" for Vilma (Mangini knew Vilma could not take on lineman). Shlegel was pegged as a powerful straight ahead force. Shlegel was to take on lineman at the point of attack freeing Vilma up to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. This has never been tried before, so noone knew if it would work. It didn't.
I wouldn't say amazing and if Ferguson doesn't get a whole lot better in a hurry it will be anything but amazing. Mangold could have been taken in the second round too or at least that was ehere everybody had him projected.
You could have Tomlinson in the backfield and it wouldn't make any difference if the OL doesn't open up any more holes then they did last year. I'm hoping the entire preseason was just a charade and everything will change starting tomorrow.
