Going along with this thread; More than 5,000 years ago, the Chinese discovered how to make silk from silkworm cocoons. For about 3,000 years, the Chinese kept this discovery a secret, Because poor people could not afford real silk, they tried to make other cloth look silky. Women would beat on cotton with sticks to soften the fibers. Then they rubbed it against a big stone to make it shiny. The shiny cotton was called "chintz." Because chintz was a cheaper copy of silk, calling something "chintzy" means it is cheap and not of good quality.
i dont care what kind of fan you guys think i am, to say that mangini was going to take us nowhere is crazy. We were not a playoff team this year, its that simple. And I know all of you trollups are going to say, "oh we spent all of this money and got all of this talent..." yeah? Jenkins was about washed up, injured reserve in 2004 and 2005. He had 5.5 sacks in two years after that. Ok, Pace and Faneca are solid already. But there is something called a rebuilding period, and because of Favre's shitty play, we got no playoff berth.
and my evidence shows that u cant say Mangini is a bad coach now. Hes young and he only has three years under his belt (with 2 winning seasons). Belichick didnt have one.
Mangini's being fired had zero to do with performance. He was fired because Woody wanted Brett and either Brett didn't want Eric or Eric didn't want Brett. It's that simple.
Here's my take on your comment about winning seasons. The first year Mangini went 10-6. Pretty good in anybody's book taking over a 4 win team. The next year he goes 4-12, though with injuries, not completely his fault overall. If you split those records down the middle he's good for 7-8 wins. This year with virtually no major injuries and way more talent than his previous 2 teams had. What does he do? He goes 9-7 which is about what he was with less talent. Bottom line - he's an average coach that even with talent is going to get out coached by everybody not named Jauron...
I'm sick of these F***ing posts with people whining left and right about the people we let go. When has this site become a mourning of the crappy personel this organization has let go of? This probably all started with Chad leaving and seeing how badly he played this week, I don't really miss him. I bet we'd be in the same position as the Dolphins if still had Chad, make the playoffs and get steamrolled by the Ravens. With the way he played, no defense or running game could have bailed him out for his bad play. I don't know about you guys, but at least we took a shot on Favre even though it didn't work out. This is much different from the years we were screaming for Hackett to be canned and the organization doing nothing about it for years. Hoping this organization suffers because we let go of a coach who can't make simple adjustments is just stupid.
THANK YOU! I mean, for Christ's sake, we STILL have a "MANGINI MUST GO" icon on the top of the BB. He sucked. Who the fuck really thinks he's about to turn the Browns around. C'mon!
That Depends On What Went Wrong... You're assuming that ANY HC would have been able to fix the problems that beset the NYJs this year. What were the problems? Was the pass defense too athletic for our LBs to execute, and therefore the TEs ran wild, and the crossing patterns were totally ignored -- all because New England showed the rest of the NFL how to get at our defensive scheme? What was that NYJ defense dinner all about -- who were missing which signals, and what DBs could not recover from being clueless about what they were supposed to do...? If the strategy was too complex to remember and the DBs and LBs all kept "flubbing their lines" because of it, why didn't they rebel and get the CS to change things so the pass defense could work well again? This happened over the bye last year and the highly successful "mush" defense was born as a result. Was their a 'failure to communicate'? How could that be when most of these players and these coaches were going through their third year together? The offense is much less incomprehensible: Brett's seat-of-the-pants worked on the Cards because their secondary was 'out-to-lunch' that day and easily fooled. But unless Brett curbed himself, seriously, and stuck to it, we had to survive a lot of under throws and INTs. This put an end to our drives, and forced the defense back on to the field before they were ready to get out there with a response. The "Vernon Gholston syndrome" overtook the NYJ defense. Everybody was suddenly afraid to make a mistake, and so they continued to make mistakes, miscues, failed to execute, and turned a "swiss cheese" front to their thrilled opponents. You wonder just exactly how could the lowly 49ers and the changeling Broncos and the awful Raiders and the Stinking Fish could continually beat us to the punch and out-hit us on the line of scrimmage?! -- Were they so excited by our sense of confusion that they could not wait to take maximum advantage of it, again and again? Lots of questions, but no answers. Yet.
You are right about calling it "so premature." It's premature to call Mangini the next Chuck Noll. It's premature to make any long-term assessment of Mangini's future. Sure, firing him might bite us in the ass. But as NY2K09 said, it was time for him to go. Maybe he deserved one more year, but he hadn't really shown me a whole lot in the past two years to suggest that he was going to be that much better.
Did any of those teams have even a speck of talent in the years of those examples the OP made? I know Dallas and Pitt didn't. Not sure if Cleveland or KC did or not. (Was Vermeil even in KC those years?) I know none of them had 7 all-pros and a HOF QB.
tell you the truth, i preferred the Herm era. At least the defense wasn't an embarassment then and the team was solid at the fundamentals.
So Mangini goes from a team that hasn't won a title in 40 years to one that hasn't won one in 45 years. Not exactly what you call progress. I guess if things don't work out in Cleveland, he can move on to the next level, Detroit, a team that hasn't won a championship in over 50 years. And if the Motor City doesn't work out for him, he can finish off his career with the Cardinals, a franchise which hasn't won jack shit in over 60 years. Good luck to Mangini in his quest to become the next Landy or Knoll.
I agree with you 100%. I have previously pointed out the fact that the Titans were bad for 3 straight years 2004 5-11, 2005 4-12, 2006 8-8. They didn't panic or lose faith in Fisher and they're a better team/franchise for sticking with him. Cowher had 3 straight non playoff years from 1998-2000. They didn't panic and fire him and look how that turned out. Also no coach could win with a qb throwing 2 tds and 9 ints the last 5 games. Maybe Mangini wanted to bench Favre and was told no. I fully expect Mangini to be successful in Cleveland.
those coaches had the benefit of actual success. both had been to a suerbowl and proven themselves to be good coaches. all mangini has done is overachieve in year one much like the dolphins did this year. shit the bed in year 2, and choke away a division title in year 3. all the comparisons people are making are pretty far from what the jets situation is. Also no coach could win with a qb throwing 2 tds and 9 ints the last 5 games. Maybe Mangini wanted to bench Favre and was told no.
Hey, SJ pointed this out in another thread... BB went Browns-Jets-Pats to a SB Mangini went Pats-Jets-Browns So ...is Eric Mangini Bizzaro Belichik?
Now it all makes sense. And since BB screws other men's wives, it means other men must be screwing Mangini's wife. This explains the whole name thing.
