I might be the only one who thinks that Schillens should be given the chance at a bigger role and thrown to a little more.
The receivers need to be better beating press. The few times they did, Hill came out limping, Holmes caught it, Sanchez overthrew Schillens. The drops also kill momentum and timing. All in all, I am not too upset in their play today.
Sanchez stinks. But when he does actually get the ball in a catchable spot, the receivers drop too many passes. Kerley is the lone bright spot, but he's a slot guy. And Shonn Greene is terrible, too. Powell should get more touches. He actually looks like he's trying to break tackles. Our offense is ugly.
This has been an issue since training camp. We have Holmes and not much else. Stephen Hill is still raw (although there really is no excuse for just flat out dropping everything thats thrown your way). Kerley is fine as a slot receiver. I dont see much use for Schillens, I believe he had a guaranteed contract which probably explains why he is here and Turner is not and Clyde Gates is pretty much a scrub (that first pick was absolutely his fault, he didnt finish his route). This team should have looked into bringing in a stop gap player for a year to give Hill more time to develop. There were some decent names out their in the offseason who we could have got on the cheap. Someone like idk maybe Braylon Edwards.
I really don't know what the answer is. Besides Holmes and Kurley highlights here and there its just bad. When Sanchez isn't missing wide open deep routes, they're dropping, not finishing routes or breaking them off for blitzes, and most of all they aren't getting any separation. They're not winning one on one battles to get open. Like today, they can squeak out wins against subpar teams like the Dolphins with this sort of mediocre play. Because of the way they film for TV (film the QB and line) it's hard to tell what these receivers are doing. All I can judge by is the poor end results. Like today when they had 6 chances inside the 5 and could not get it in the end zone.
My god watching Jacoby Jones just run go routes...............................why can't we do this
Because we don't have Ray Rice a top 5 RB who can burn teams on the ground. We also don't have a Torrey Smith and Boldin to help out the same Jones
We failed to sign a good receiver this year, and it probably has a lot to do with that ridiculous contract Santonio has. This guy is a #2 receiver. He's being single covered the entire game and can't get separation, can't beat his man, he's a #2 receiver. I don't know anything about the cap situation, will we have room to sign some receivers next season? If not, then we just have to rely on hill developing into a star. He certainly has the potential. We also need a running back badly. Can't ground and pound without a good RB.
If we can get more performances by Tone like today it will certainly be a boon to the offense. Kerley has been absolutely impressive so far as well
I've been saying this for the longest, we need a good RB possibly round 1. We could have picked up Lamar Miller but the Dolphins got him 4th round! ! He was projected as a 1st round pick by many. And I agree with Keller at WR, it could happen he's got the body for it.
Poor game to criticize Tone after. You literally had handfuls of games to pick, and you picked the one he goes 9 for 147 and drew a couple penalties. He beat his man plenty and sometimes 2 guys today.
I wont let one good game change my opinion of him. That's the problem with people around here. Get all hyped over one game, and then flip flop the next. Let me see him do it on a consistent basis. This is the first time he's gone over 100 yards in what, 22+ games?
Get TO on the team, he needs a job and I still think he's got some left in him. I know he dropped a couple passes but that was his first game in a while.
How do you have any idea what kind of job the WR coach is doing? The #1 receiver is a diva, but a talented player. Not sure a receivers coach is going to affect Holmes much at this point. He's been given a rookie 2nd rounder who didn't even catch 50 passes in his entire college career as his #2 receiver. Sanjay Lal can't fix Stephen Hill's hands, you just have to hope that it gets better with nerves and experience. The 3rd receiver is a 2nd-year 5th round pick in Kerley who has actually played well this season. The 4th receiver was signed in the offseason and barely played at all in training camp. Hard to teach a guy to break press coverage when he's sitting on the sideline rehabbing. I'm annoyed with our receivers' inability to break press coverage as much as the next guy. But scapegoating him for a lack of talent and experience makes no sense to me. The offense is breaking down as a whole. The receivers have a lot to do with that, but when you rely so heavily on a guy like Hill who was super inexperienced in college, he's got a lot of technique to learn. But you want to fire the receivers coach after 3 games? I get the offense is bad, but we don't need to call to fire people just to fire them.
I'm sure next year some running back that a couple people think could be a late 1st rounder will fall to round 4. People fall in the draft every year. We do need a running back though. Probably another receiver to groom to wait in the wings to replace Santonio at some point, too, but that doesn't have to be drafted as high. By the way, I have to give credit to Holmes. I've been making fun of him all year and been on his case, but he stepped up and had a nice game. Kudos to him. No one draws more penalties than he does (deserved or not), but he also made important plays in key moments today. Very good job. Hope we see more games like this from him.
