Winters is one of the keys to developing this team to the next level, imo. Colon is one way or the other not going to be a part of the Jets' medium to long term future. If it had been Winters who committed three penalties I would have been much more upset. He seemed to have some nice blocks. I will be looking at some more clever analysis of his game than I could come up with, but to me he looked relatively good, and I was big time down on him last year.
Colon is a solid blocker in the run game, and is genuinely part of the reason we had 212 rushing yards yesterday. The penalties must come down, but had we cleaned up other mistakes we still would have blown them out even with Colon's 3 penalties. I'm pretty sure Colon will walk in FA or retire after this year, so hopefully Aboushi or Dozier steps up. I'm not opposed at all to drafting another OL in the 4th round or higher next year.
Great post. We were one of the least penalized teams in 2012. The roster was overhauled in 2013, and we became one of the youngest teams in the NFL. That is when penalties also increased. People look at one year, have a previous Rex agenda, and try to further that agenda by claiming penalties have been some ongoing problem (while ignoring the facts). it's comical really. In terms of last night, i believe every Olineman with exception of Mangold was flagged. However, the Oline had a tremendous day overall, including Colon. I'm ok with a few penalties, as long as they stay this aggressive against better opponents. What both the Offense and Dline can clean up is some of the pre-snap flags though. Illegal formations, delay of game, offsides, etc, can be improved on even with the young team. For instance, on the Dline, i noticed they are trying to time the snap based on play clock. that's an unnecessary gamble if your a good enough player, and it's bit them a few times now. that can (and should) be corrected.
yea, give him a hanger steak. Jets record 1-0. The only stat that matters. Watch film, clean up the mistakes.
We had 11 - 105 in penalties and as far as I'm aware , Colon had 3 of those. I thinks its a little unfair to just single him out as there were plenty of bone-headed penalties, and for once I didn't think the refs had a bad game either. Its game 1 and we won, enjoy it.
List of NYJ penalties this game: 1. Giacomini - false start 2. Colon - Holding 3. Ferguson - Holding 4. Demario Davis - off sides 5. Eric Decker - holding 6. Colon - False start 7. Allen - Holding 8. Richardson - off sides 9. Decker - PI 10. Colon - face mask 11. Pace - roughing the passer 12. Walls - PI 1st half penalties: 9 2nd half penalties: 3 It did get better as the game went on. Colon is responsible for 3/12 penalties (tied for 1st in the league in penalties). Decker for 2, the rest is a grab bag. Either way 12 (11 enforced) is way too many. That puts us right near the bottom with only 2 teams that got more penalties this week (Titans and Rams). Without Colon's 3, we'd be tied for 11th worst, so it's still something we need to clean up. I hope Rex is tearing them a new one this week.
i could care less about the number of penalties. i get more crazy about what down they occur on and where on the field.
They said they are going to put further emphasis on calling the offensive pass interference. I sure hope that's true across the board and not just in certain situations/teams. I'll take a curious call like that against Decker if they start calling the offensive pass interference and picks on New England as they have made livings up there with that bullshit for years.
These type of things always happen with locker room leaders. They get a pass for a long time on mediocre, or worse, even downright negative play. But also, Colon definitely does good work in the running game. He's not getting benched anytime soon.
I wish they would give more leeway on both sides of the ball. They've pussified the receiving game over the last two decades by calling ever more ticky-tacky penalties to the point where you get phantom calls like the one on Decker way too often. Let the guys play the game...
Absolutely agree with this. There will always be times in a game where an OL or a DB just gets beat, and has no choice but to hold in order to avoid potential disaster. It's the pre-snap concentration penalties that are the most frustrating.
This is the point. Most of the holding calls and pass interferences turn out to be pretty good fouls in the grand scheme of things. Would you rather a Geno strip sack going the other way or a a ten yard loss? Would you rather a long touchdown on the Walls pass interference or a ten yard gain? It's not inexcusable but it's understandable why players make these plays. Anyone whose played offensive line in their lives know how easily it is to get flagged if your hands even touch the bicep of the other player and more importantly how important it is to protect your quarterback. My high school team went down to our 3rd option and our season was over, playing our #1 receiver at quarterback.
Colon was atrocious on Sunday. He needs to get it together moving forward otherwise we are going to have to turn to one of our younger backups earlier then it would appear we'd like to. On a good note though, Brian Winters, after starting off a little shaky, played a good game which is very encouraging. I just hope Willie Colon doesnt become the 2013 Brian Winters.
