Pretty much. I have no problem with the formation itself. The problem I have is that we don't seem to have the personnel to successfully execute it.
What are the chances Tebow and Hunter will both play TE. Then they could actually be valuable to the team!
I think the benefits would be far greater to Sanchez having two big hulking tight ends who are good blockers, and fractionally ok receivers . Two tight ends who can REALLY block would do so much more for Sanchez. First it helps develop and really get the ground and pound going. Which opens up Sanchez's greatest strength playaction. Plus he can do his rollouts (his other big strength) all the more effectively. Right now our TEs are just dogshit and gonna get Sanchez killed
Cumberland is complete garbage. By the end of the Preseason Josh Baker will supplant him as the #2 TE and the blocking will get a little better. Keller's gone after the season.
Baker is smaller than even DK (and Tebow) and like 25 pounds smaller than even Cumberland. I expect very little from him
At this point given the personnel I think the Jets best bet is to run the old Raiders 80's offense with a ton of shots down the field and counter-punching with draws up the gut and traps off-tackle when the defense sits back in a zone and sends 4 or 5 rushers with their ears peeled back. Sanchez will throw a bunch of picks, just like Plunkett did when he was QBing the Raiders, but the Jet offense will not be stagnant in the process. The thing I fear the most this year is that the Jet's offense is completely stagnant because the scheme doesn't fit the personnel. That would probably leave the defense as the deciding factor in whether the Jets win 4, 5 or 6 games.
There is nothing based on our past play that suggests we should be pursuing more 2 TE sets. The reason New England is bananas over TEs? The Patriots embraced 2 TE sets because that was the only way to get 2 really good players on the field at the same time... it wasn't about scheme, it was maximizing the opportunity of the talent they already had. If anything, we should be figuring out ways to get Tebow on the field at the same time as Sanchez... hype aside, he is a player with a very unique set of skills that provides matchup problems for defenses
The reason the Patriots are in a 2 TE system is that Bill Belichik is enamored of TE's as assets that break defenses. The size factor gives a team in a 2 TE set more mass on the field and creates matchup problems for the opposing defense. If you look at Belichik's draft history with the Pats you see 6 TE's taken in the first 4 rounds over the last decade. He's got Gronk and Hernandez now as part of a pattern of trying to find two good TE's not as a lucky result of taking two in one year.
That's a BS assertion, sorry. Belichick tried for close to a decade to draft his two prototypical TEs and hit the jackpot with both in one draft. It's not like he just whoops and drafted two talented TEs accidentally. He has been moving his offense's focus toward the center of the field for years. It's not a bad blueprint to follow, now that the rules are what they are.
So... you are saying Jets cannot run or pass. Then what kind of offense do you think is going to be effective for them?
Ok, I'm not saying DK is a great blocker. He is actually a very poor blocker, but he had something with Sanchez that no one else had last year. Why get rid of the only thing that has been a constant for him? When he's on the field it should be in passing situation where he is split out. Even if we run out of a formation like that, I'm pretty sure DK can handle blocking a S or CB. All we need to do is bring back Matt Mul..... Oh wait....
DK sucks at blocking, no doubt about that. His connection with Sanchez kinda makes up for it though. I dont see him going anywhere
Because he doesnt fit this team Hes gonna be a highly paid (as far as TEs go) next year, so no reason to pay someone good money (for a te) that doesnt fit the offense. Tight ends should block plain and simple, especially ones on a team that prides itself on ground and pound. And if Sanchez in his 5th year cant handle adjusting to new talent around him then, then he shouldnt be a starting qb in the nfl. The first 1 2 3 years, hes young and learning adjusting, you wanna keep shit simple and keep his guys the same I get that. But by the 5th year if he cant handle changing pieces then theres something wrong. Not to mention itll be his 4th year with Holmes, 3rd year with Kerley, 5th year (maybe?) with Greene and he has Hill locked up for likely 5 more years so that should be fine for continuity. If we build the offense to match our style on defense this is a perennial Superbowl contender. If we continue to have this ridiculous mix and match offense with guards who dont fit, tight ends that dont fit, and a wishy washy offensive philosophy the offense will never succeed. We brought in Sparano to install a power running game, yet simply dont have the personnel to do that. If this is the plan, then I dont like it
If you're a TE that can't block for shit then you need to be a game-breaking receiver ... which DK is not. Tired of all this crap about how he's Sanchez favorite target and then ignoring how useless a blocker he is. Blocking TE that can only catch easy wide open passes would contribute more to the "Ground & Pound" then a watered-down Shannon Sharpe. I'm still hoping the other TE will show us more than what we saw in the first preseason game. With DK, there's no need to wait to pass judgement. We've seen him enough to know he just won't block. Sometimes I wonder if the Jets should experiment with pushing him out & trying WR. That way he won't be bringing in an unblocked LB on every running play.
the two tight end set was probably due to personell more than anything else. two of our top 3 receivers are out right now as well as our starting right tackle.
Sanchez is a NFL qb and needs to adjust to the best package the Jets can surround him with. DK sucks as a blocker and isn't focuses all the time when receiving. You can't cripple other positions on the field because you're afraid your QB can't develop the ability to throw to other receivers.
Your game plan shouldn't be based in what you want to do, but more on what kind of personnel you have. We don't have the pieces to run two TE sets, so why run them? Don't make your players do things they're not good at. If someone can't run a certain route, don't have him run it. If a certain someone isn't too good throwing the ball, don't make him throw. If Keller can't block, SPLIT HIM OUT AS A RECEIVER. I'd much rather him on or team than watching him do well on another.
