Glennon should be thankful he isn't taking snaps from our line. Guy would get drilled left and right, he needs a clean pocket to operate and the Bucs OLine has given him that in his brief run thus far. Glennon has taken advantage so credit has to be given to him admittedly but Glennon on the Jets would still be a disaster. Geno at least has mobility even if he doesn't make wise decisions when under duress.
One QB I really like so far, but have GREAT reservations on is Mariota from Oregon. - Marcus Mariota,Oregon 6'4", 215 lbs and runs a 4.55 Things I look at are who he throws to and who he hands off to in college. Mariota has a top 20 college receiver in Josh Huffn so I count that as a negative. Add in he has two great young RBs in Marshall and Tyner and that is a double negative. Is the run so good because of the passing game or is it the other way? Then add in he has Colt Lyerla at TE and Hroniss Grasu at Center whom is pretty darn good. Begs to ask who wouldn't be good with that talent around you? The guy I think who is my dark horse is Sean Mannion from Oregon State. He hurt his stock in the last three games, but up until then he was rocking it. - Sean Mannion, Oregon State, 6'5", 215 lbs, with a sluggish 4.90 speed. (A pocket QB.) He has a possible top ten receiver in Brandin Cooks who caught 110 passes this year, but is short and quick, but not what I would call a speedster at the NFL level. He has no run support and not an offensive guy at any passion I would call even a top thirty except for Cooks, compared to all the guys Mariota has. *Both these guys would be better if they stay in college another year, but they won't and even as they are should find themselves in the top 5 QBs taken.
Bucs fan here. What is up with this "Glennon has a better O-line" rumor that is circulating among the Smith apologists here? Our fan base considers our O-line a big negative as well. While I could not tell how much worse your O-line is, if at all, I will say that if you watch Glennon play, you will see a QB that with quick decision making and extremely accurate arm within 20 yds that hits his receivers in stride or checks down to RB when no one else is open. Its unfair to penalize him by giving credit to our undeserving O-line when he does a masterful job of managing that pressure for a rookie.
Smith does not have a quick release at all, and is slow to read the defenses which leads to a lot of the pressure he gets. The Jets have a good O-line, much better than last year and yet people are quick to blame them and not the real problem. The Jets have a top ten O-line.
Top 10 O line? On what planet? They were ranked 27th by PFF before the Ravens game, and I doubt they moved up after that game. Mangold and Brick are both having disastrous years, along with Winters struggling mightily.
Smith is killing the stats. We have a top five center, a top five LT, a solid RT who is better after a year under his belt. A veteran guard who is holding his side pretty good and a rookie guard who out played a three year vet who was a 2nd round pick. If we has a RB anyone feared or a QB who didn't hold onto the ball we would be way better off. This O-line is the best we have had in three years.
I absolutely hate the system that Mariotta plays in, I really like Zach Mettenberger's skillset and also McCarron to a certain extent, I question McCarons arm strength though, is it good enough to play in New York weather?
And now you've officially lost all credibility (not that you weren't already full of sh*t). Not sure what team you've been watching, but the offensive line I've been watching has been VASTLY overrated, including your top five center and your top five LT. While there was a time that Brick and Mangold were certainly top 5 players at their position, those days have long past. Brick gets beat regularly in pass protection and Mangold has been above average at best the past few seasons. The fact that you are so ready to completely give up on Geno after 11 games is asinine! Dude's got arguably the worst offensive talent in the league (certainly WR's, especially with his go to guy Kerley hurt) and a secondary that's getting burned regularly, putting the team in early deficits. I don't have a crystal ball, so I can't tell you if Geno is gonna be good or not, but I choose to reserve judgement until Geno gets a year under his belt and gets some legitimate talent around him. I know it's asking a lot, but sometimes patience is needed when assessing a first year QB. Lastly, Glennon has INFINITELY better play makers around him. To even compare the two at this point based on what weapons each has is utterly ridiculous!!
Even tho i agree with you that our Oline is terrible Smith pocket awarness is alarming on the other hand the guy he mentions is very aware when he is about to get pressure and for where it comes plus he doesnt panic and directly check down to his quick screen from the running back.
Your OLine can run block as evident by 3 running backs having success in the past 2 years. A 6th round rookie this year and a guy who got signed off the streets basically have done good things for you with the help of the OLine. Ours at times can open up holes but it isn't consistent and our running game takes flight usually after the defense gets worn down. I can't judge your pass protection necessarily compared to you but ours is very inconsistent and our tackles have not been the best all year around. I know Penn has been lousy for you guys at LT though hasn't he come on lately? He did a solid job vs Miami I thought? Again I am not trying to discredit Glennon so much....I just don't think he'd be accomplishing what he is in Tampa Bay with the Jets.
I don't even think DBrick is a top 10 LT this year. He used to be one of the elite but age might have caught up with him as a LT. Austin Howard at times is a solid RT but he's too inconsistent. And I think half of TGG if they were 280+ pounds can outplay Duccasse. What a huge letdown he was, I really thought he'd be an answer for us in the OLine when we drafted him. Colon is holding his own in creating holes but he has been shaky with pass protection for quite some time, dating back to his Steelers days.
You were gone for a while and now that cause we all wanted geno to succeed and hype him up.... Gonna have to eat our crap? Come on man. I thought he would be decent at least. Now I don't care and hate Every QB we drafted or signed ever.
Glennon looks good. I know I liked him coming out of collage. He is tall and has a nice arm. Good pick by tampa. Glennon got no love from Kiper or the NFL. I Know a lot of people here liked him too.
Stephen Morris is not impressive and I wouldn't touch him in the first 5 rounds for sure. He lacks the accuracy and physical frame NFL teams are looking for. During his two years as the starter he has averaged only 58% completions each year and this year only managed 18 TDs with 12 Ints. During the last two years when Ryan Williams has seen action he has completed 71% of his passes and 4 TDs to 1 Ints with the same players around him. Makes you wonder why Williams was benched for Morris. Also, Morris cannot run at all and only averaged an embarrassing .4 yards a carry over the last two years. This kid had a GREAT running game to take the heat off and should have opened up the passing game for better numbers. The primary RB for the last two years, Duke Johnson has averaged 6.5 yards a carry and the #2 RB Dallas Crawford has averaged 4.5 yards this season and has 12 TDs, as the #2! Morris is a slightly above average college QB with a great running game. What would happen in the NFL with no running game to take the heat off. May as well have Geno Smith as your QB. It is likely Miami will have the most drafted players in the 2014 draft class. Morris’ supporting cast the last two years include these guys who will be on some NFL team in June 2014: Top 10 FB in Maurice Hagens Top 30 WR in Allen Hurns Top 15 TE in Asante Cleveland Top 5 OT in Seantrel Henderson TWO Top 20 OGs in Brandon Linder and Malcolm Bunche TWO Top 20 Cs in Jared Wheeler and Shane McDermott Add in both his RBs would be drafted if they weren't Sophomores and he has been completely surrounded by NFL talent the last two years and still only managed little better than average numbers. If Sean Mannion (Oregon State) had this much talent around him he would be a top 1-2 QB in college and even without any support near this level he is lights out better than Morris. Geno Smith had talent around him in college and we now know those players made him look better than he really was. Same goes for Morris.
Great article you will never see about Geno Smith. Six-Pack of Reasons Why Mike Glennon Will Become a Franchise Quarterback for the Tampa Bay Bucs Too long to fully post, but here are the main points: He Has the Height Throws Where Receivers Aren't...Yet College Career Reveals Poise Avoiding Costly Mistakes He Can Run After All! I've been mad we didn't draft this kid from the moment they announced Smith's name at the draft. This is what happens when a GM with no scouting or true football experience makes a pick.
