I just want to clarify something... Last year, we ran 607 rushing plays and 423 passing plays. Let's say 80% of those passing plays have a RB in the backfield. Now, those numbers will come down a bit. Say 500 running plays, 500 passing plays. Let's say we have a back in the backfield on 60% of those pass plays...a conservative estimate given our new receiving corps. In that scenario, I see Tomlinson likely getting 150 carries and see him in on 150 passing plays. According to your numbers, though, he's getting probably 225 carries (225 for Greene, 50 for McKnight) and he's in on 75 pass plays to 225 for McKnight. You really don't think the team limits his carries any more than that and tries to make him a bigger part of the passing game, both for his blocking AND his ability to catch out of the backfield?
If we're 'going for it' next season, I vote 'other'. Who? Don't know, but out of the two, Slauson has the edge. Ducasse is still very raw and lacks technique, which apparently can be taught.
I can't watch games of every player! Highlights can be useful in evaluting what a player is extremely good at. If you say many times Carroll had him run on the outside how can you be so sure he'd be good at running on the inside? If I'm watching a guy run 8 out of 10 times on the outside and being good at it I have evidence he's a good outside rusher but no clue as to wether he's a good inside runner. From what you say Carrol didn't make him run 5/10 inside and 5/10 outside... so what do you base your "he'll be a fine between the tackles runner" opinion on? I don't have absolutes but I do keep some number as references... especially when I'm talking about a guy who's never played a down in the NFL. Thanks Abzymul for explaining thos things about the zone-blocking...
I see LdT in 175 carries and 100 pass plays more or less... passing plays also depend on how quickly McKnight learns to pass protect.
Along with team chemistry, who's going to start at LG is a topic that's been beaten to death. Going to be a long wait up until Hard Knocks.
Here's some zone blocking stuff I found with a quick search. The stretch zone is another reason I think Slauson is going to get the nod at LG this season - we use it a lot. He played in the same scheme that Callahan is teaching our line. I don't know what kind of offense UMass runs, but I doubt they run as good of a scheme as what Slauson was playing in with Big Red. I'll say it again. I know he can run between the tackles because I've seen him do it, because USC runs a zone blocking scheme just like we do, and because I have faith he'll add some weight. If he were 10 pounds heavier, there would be no questions about his balance as a runner. Guess what? We have LT for two seasons while McKnight bulks up and adjusts to the pro game. I know you can't watch every game, but when you're talking to someone who has watched the majority of a player's games and you've only seen highlights, why the hell would you want to keep insisting that person didn't see what he saw? Because it didn't make a highlight reel?
I went with Slauson. If he can replace Faneca and Vlad replaces woody next year, it could be a great OL for the next 5-6 years.
that is my current dream scenario for this offensive line. i am confident vlad will be good but i need to check out slauson this preseseason.
Saw Faneca on Total Access tonight and he said that the reason he was cut was because they wanted to go young and give a guy they've been grooming a shot. Makes me think Slauson or Turner will be our LG come September and drafting Vlad was for Woodys eventual replacement.
I don't think we have enough of a sample of his ability to judge Slauson fairly, but he sure looks like an offensive lineman.
Well... It's either that or...... "I'm kinda old and not as good as I once was and I completely wiffed more than a few times nearly getting my QB killed - The Jets think a rookie could do that at this point for a lot less... "
