I certainly agree with that. As fans the only thing that we can hope is that the Jets don't let media perceptions influence the choice of who should play.
By guessing. That's the point. In either case, I'm with the poster who said these guys are both starters sooner rather than later. Slauson certainly has the build for it, and he's had, what, four or five years under Bill Callahan? I'd say that bodes well for any concerns anybody has about his technique, in pass protection or otherwise. Ducasse looks like one hell of a prospect, relatively undeveloped, but it wouldn't be the first time somebody made a quick conversion to guard. Brandon Moore was a nose tackle at Navy, and he switched over in just a few years. There have been a couple former wrestlers and such who have figured it out pretty quickly. On balance, I'd have to guess Slauson gets this job. They'll both be starting eventually, so why not give the first shot to the guy who's more polished and knows the offense. Ducasse will hang around for a year, maybe get some work as a sixth lineman or something, and end up replacing Moore or Woody in a year or two. On a side note, it's awesome that we have young talent on the offensive line ready to take starting jobs and play on the cheap for a few years, because we need the funds elsewhere. This was arguably our second thinnest area depthwise before the draft (after DE), it's amazing how much drafting Ducasse did to change that outlook.
It's OTA's, I wouldn't say it's a decided issue if Slausson had gotten all or the majority of first team snaps in OTA. No Pads, No contact, Just drills to get familiar with the system. The test for both players will be when the pads come on and full contact starts later this year, and that's when who wins the position will be decided, not in OTA.
There shouldn't have been. Faneca stated outright (on NFLTA shortly after he was cut) that the Jets had been grooming a guy to replace him at LG. It would make no sense to draft a guy in the second round to play LG. RT was the only logical destination for Ducasse.
Especially with how raw Ducasse was it should have been obvious we were going with Slauson and I think most people knew that despite the poll. Everything has worked out perfectly so far as well since Slauson improved a ton as the year went on. Now we just have to hope Ducasse can keep improving. With Mangold Brick Slauson and Ducasse we have 4 young starters on our line who can play together for years.
