Something tells me if we offered Revis 3 years, 32-35 mil he would've taken it. I bet it's what we get him for after he ditches the Pats for us next season.
We also have athletic linebackers and can deploy a 3 safety package to help against spread offenses. That formation will help us against the NFC North / as well as the Broncos and Patriots. We have a versatile defense - we are built to really play any type of defense. Look at how we played the Saints last season. Big Nickel can help us ease the weakness at CB. I look forward to Pryor and Allen playing safety this season. Landry as well. I've known about the Big Nickel formation for some-time now, but now with 3 safeties capable of playing in the box as well as cover we should use it more often. We just need to up the pass-rush more IMO - once Milliner returns, I think the CB spot will be fine. I believe in Walls.
No, you suck. Go educate yourself - how dare you call people a homer or whatever the hell you call people and not know jack damn shit about nickel packages that can assist us in beating spread offenses.
Calm down Horace. How does my thinking Walls suck mean I don't know about nickel packages? As far as playing three safeties is concerned, I never said that cannot be effective, and do not say so. But if your weakness at cb means you don't have the flexibility to play press coverage, surely you would concede something valuable is lost. And if Walls is so great, why did they move Allen to Cb?
I love how the one guy that needs to read the "rollover money" thread the most is one of the few who hasn't weighed in on it yet. That's how you know you're wasting your time every time you try and talk to him.
if i read this drivel correctly, teams w/o two good-to-outstanding CB's on their roster need not apply for Super Bowls or Success. Got it!
If we end up having the worse passing defense in the league this season then what? All Hail John Idzik?
The point is that Rex has proven that he can adjust to his personnel. He had two good press cover corners in Revis and Cromartie so he therefore took advantage and played the coverage effectively. We saw a lot more zone schemes last year due to the ineffectiveness of the cornerback play and as a result the defense only struggled immensely when they were on the field for days or put into poor positions by the offense. There are probably 3-6 players in the league including Sherman, Revis, Peterson, Talib and Haden that can play press coverage without getting flagged on every down. It's obviously a benefit and a luxury but a luxury that very few NFL teams around the league have. Look at how teams like the 49ers, Panthers, Steelers and Ravens have faired building their defenses from the front back and dealing with the ailments at corner. It doesn't cripple a defense because they don't have two lock down defenders. Most of these teams compensate by having good safeties that make plays and having such a formidable front 3 allows the Jets flexibility to take a linebacker off the field in favor of another defensive back to devise a zone scheme to defend the pass while still defending the run.
You're talking about people that don't exist. Good try though. Whatever helps you self-loathe better.
Do you have anything remotely intelligent to say in terms of football knowledge to contribute? Because other than saying rah Idzik sucks I've yet to see you say anything formidable in terms of football discussion.
Then you clearly don't read half the shit I post, take a hike.I never said Idzik sucks but he def dropped the ball with the cb situation and you guys make a million excuses as to why that happend besides the obvious one
I have never said that Ryan will not try and deal with the roster he ends up with. But the fact is that despite having one of the better DL's in the league, having invested first round picks in Coples, Wilkerson and Richardson and lucking out with Harrison, despite a core player in Harris and a very good year for Pace as an aging vet, the pass D last year was bad. Coples of course was transitioning last year, and about him I have a relatively optimistic set of expectations. Overall I liked the Pryor signing, although I do not expect much from him in pass coverage per se. But despite likely improvements from those two and continued strong DL play, I would be surprised if the pass D is not at least as bad as it was last year. The unfortunate net result is that this situation is likely to hurt the O, since it risks them having to play from behind. The Jets will probably still attempt to run the ball well into the game even if behind. But at some point it puts the pressure on Smith to try and win it in the air, and that is not where they want to be. Of yuor examples, let's take the Niners. Those guys have perhaps the best linebackers in the league, or arguably so. The Jets are not in their league. How exactly is their situation supposed to be a model for what Rex can do? I agree there is more than one way to field an effective defense, and Rex will do what he can with what he is given. THat does not take away from the net effect of having less flexibility when your corners suck. It doesnt take away from what Rex could do if he had the tools at cb. It doesn't take away from the fact that the Jets did try to get more help at Cb but were inept going about it. And it surely does not mean we can all be confident the Jets will have a good pass defense this year.
I hate these arguments like "You should only take Revis for a one year rental at CB if we were going for the SB" We run a D that needs all-star CB's. It's a pity so many of our corners got injured, but signing Revis instead of Patterson and having $12mil rolled over to the next season(instead of $21mil) was definitely the better play. ----------------------------------------- This team with Revis and Milliner in the backfield would have definitely been a SB contender, and a contender for one of the greatest defenses of all time.
