So on that basis, wouldn't you reward Geno with the same bump as Miliner for the progression shown in the final 4 games? Stark difference vs the rest of the season over that period in terms of completion %, TDs, Turnovers, Ws, consistent improvement across measures. I agree that Milliner progressed, but by that standard, they both did.
The best pick was obviously Richardson. I see him becoming the best defensive player on the team as soon as next year. Wilkerson is an excellent player, but I think Richardson will surpass him. With Coples coming on towards the end of the year as well, that is a scary defensive front. Geno was a rookie QB who probably wasnt ready to start right away. Thats exactly what he played like. Some good flashes mixed with some inconsistent play. What made me a bit of a believer was how much better his numbers were when Kerley was playing vs when he wasnt. After getting Geno a bit more talent on offense, I think the guy can really succeed. Maybe I'm watching with green glasses but I like what I see. Milliner has a bright future as well. He struggled mightily early on, but it cannot be easy to be a rookie CB in Rex's system. A lot of 1 on 1 coverage with no help over the top. He didnt get many snaps before the season and it showed. His improvement the last month or so was incredible IMO. He's learning the position. Covered Gordon and Wallace pretty damn well. Winters I'm not really sure on. I can never focus on OL while I'm watching the game lol
He was also throwing to the worst WR talent in the NFL, bar none, and set a Jets rookie passing record (while passing over 3,000 yards). All without spending the whole offseason taking 1st team reps as Sanchez did in '09. I freely admit he was straight up terrible at times this season. But so were those around him. 2013 is an "Incomplete" if we're being anything close to fair. By the end of 2009, look at who Sanchez- also a rookie on a much better team- was throwing to: David Clowney Jerricho Cotchery Braylon Edwards Brad Smith Dustin Keller Danny Woodhead Wallace Wright Sanchez went 8-7, throwing for 600 fewer yards in 1 fewer game. In '09, Sanchez had 1 game winning drive. Credit also goes to Nick Folk here, but in 2013 Geno had 5 (Sanchez has 12 liftime, fwiw). I don't love Geno. I don't know if he'll be a franchise QB. If I had to guess, I'd say maybe not, but to me the entire season is an asterisk when you consider who he was throwing the ball to. He went (iirc) 8-4 with Kerley in the line up, and 0-4 without him (incl. I think 6-2 with Jeremy Kerley starting). And Kerley isn't Wes Welker/Victor Cruz out there. Imagine J-Co & a younger Braylon Edwards (albeit, not the full- season), plus Brad Smith and Dustin Keller for a full season. I think has a better year than he does this year. Again, I freely admit he was terrible in some games. But I also remember when he threw a pass to Greg Salas (Saints, iirc) and I literally went "Who is 'Greg Salas'? at the same time the guy next to me did. You want to give him a C comparing him to Drew Brees, fine, but what isn't nuts is to consider the context of his performance against that of other rookie QBs, in which case he's a lot more of a 'B' than 'C' or below. Geno was at times good, and at times awful, with next to no help, on a team that asked more of him due to a worse running game than Sanchez had in '09. That's all I can say. I don't think anyone could honestly suggest he was given the talent to get an A or a B. EJ Manuel went 4-6, Mike Glennon 4-9. Each had higher QBRs and some better stats, but fewer wins, and Geno wasn't throwing to Vincent Jackson or Stevie Johnson. Geno is not a great QB, but I think he had a better than average year for any rookie QB being put in the spot we put him in. I don't think it is nuts to consider the tools he was given to work with when grading the product he delivered.
Isn't it too early? If at all, rookies should be graded on promises, not on results. Or you get to grade Peyton Manning's 20+ TD pass rookie season as C, which is hardly the case. I would give Sheldon A+, but I'd also give Milliner B+. Looks like (of course, with right guidance) he found his way out there. As hard as I have been on Geno, I'd give him a solid B as well - especially based on his strong finish. Winters struggled - or all the OL prospects, AND Mangold and Ferguson for that matter. I am inclined to think that it's an artifact of the poor OL coaching from Mike Devlin. I wouldn't want to see him coaching the OL again next season. I'd like to reserve my comment for now, but if I have to grade Winters, I'd give him C - he should get the benefit of the doubt. Bohanon was a pleasant surprise to me - in a league where FB is a dying breed, Jets look to have found a true WCO FB. Nice job on 7th. B+
Can't believe all of the C grades for Bohannon. What more would you want a 7th round pick to do at the fullback position? Did he need to score Sheldon's goal line TD's? He was solid for us all year, and I never once said to myself "he'll improve with experience" or 'well, he's just a rookie, why do you expect?" I'd give him a B+ He did a nice job for us all season. Relative to his draft position, he was more valuable to us than the other rookies, other than Sheldon. Compare him to Aboushi and Campbell, then give him a grade.
Milliner: C overall, was F until last month or so. expectations for the future? solid starter Richardson: A+, what else could we have asked from him as a rookie? expectations for the future? All pro Geno: C, finished strong and gives me hope. Expectations for the future? solid starter Winters: C, expectations for the future? solid starter Aboushi: incomplete, expectations for the future? No clue Campbell: incomplete, expectations for the future? No clue Bohanon: B, expectations for the future? solid starter
In my book Bohannon gets a DD---------------------------------------- Winters is maybe a C- to a D Geno I would raise up to a B - based on the last 2 games Sheldon is surely a A+ pick  Milliner I would give a C this year but see some possibilities from a B or even a A as the years go by
I think champs account got hacked. If only a SB is success then all these guys should have received an F for not getting us there...
Ur correct the entire 2013 NYJ team gets a big fat F cause they did not win the SB. But the thread about rating only the rookies which I did
Milliner. D+. Had shoulder surgery, didn't report to camp on time. What was the result? He played with poor technique for most of the year. Towards the end, he was certainly coached up (which makes me think that Reed had something to do with it), and performed more to his talent level. As noted in the last few weeks, his play has certainly improved. He seems to do better playing the man instead of the ball (as most rookie CBs do), but it would be nice to see him play the ball a bit better more consistently. Richardson: A+. Is he the next Warren Sapp? Who knows. He certainly appears to be the missing piece for the Jets' front seven. Given his fumble serving as fullback, would probably reduce his carries next year. Smith: C. Erratic play. Sometimes he makes great decisions. Sometimes he makes the worst possible decisions. Sure, his 40-step drops have to go, but what really irked me -- like most on this board -- were the picks. Earlier in the year, his INTs didn't bother me because he was chucking the ball downfield. If the goal is to take those kind of high risk/reward throws, then the team will have to live with picks. That's fine. But, if there's anything that two years of Schottenheimer and a year of Sporano taught us, as fans, it's that the QB absolutely cannot turn the ball over close to the LOS because it leads to pick-6's. And that's exactly what Smith started doing a bit before the Saints game. Even in the second Dolphins game, he took that questionable throw across the field to a receiver who wasn't 10-yards off the LOS (forgot which LB had a shot at it). Apart from his decision making, it's clear that Smith's gotten more comfortable with the scheme and with using his tools. Whenever he ran, it seemed to be successful. made me feel better about the pick. In this case, objectivity is tough because the kid plays the most important position in any sport. Ultimately, Idzik picked an 8-game winning QB with a second round pick. At this moment in time, does it appear that Idzik got decent value? Certainly. Could he have gotten better value in Larry Warford? Certainly. Hell yes. Would it have led to more wins in 2013? Maybe. Will Smith turn out to be a better pick? Don't know. INC Winters: C+. The kid's great in run blocking. Can definitely make a hole and moves upfield fairly well. Might have been better if he wasn't injured in TC. He needs work in pass pro, which is typical of rookie guards, especially those who are changing positions (LT). Confident that he'll get better. Best thing that can be said about Winters? He's better than Ducasse. Bohanon: B. Does what's asked of him. Incompletes Aboushi, Campbell. Who the hell are these guys? This GGN Article, Bargain Basement Bigs, seems to indicate that Mornhinweg likes to use late picks on linemen, which seems to make sense for me. Hopefully these guys will amount to something (a la Brandon Moore).
I just read that Dee Milliner was named defensive rookie of the month? Incredible progression, wooooo!!!
Richardson AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA+ bohanon C smith d showed me the same thing he did in collage,(NOTHING) winters d+ I though he would be better. millner d- such a disappointment, I expected so much more.
Milliner - C-: which is up from the D or worse he would have got earlier in the year but he had some improved play over the last three or four games. Rating on this games alone would be B+ or even A- if I'm being really generous. I hope that he picks up where he left off but if you look at his season on the whole (i.e. benchings, holding out of camp, poor coverage and tackling at times, etc.) anything above a C is being insanely generous or just not taking his entire season into account. Richardson - A+: What can I say? Didn't like the pick at the time but he killed it this season. Would be shocked if he didn't get DROY. If I was getting a jersey today it would be between Big Mo and Richardson. Geno - C+: Torn between a C or C+ but went with C+ factoring in the crappy receivers he was working with. I'm operating with the idea that C is average and thinking he was a touch above being average based on his play over the last few games. Otherwise he'd be a D or worse. Winters - C-: Definitely had major issues but I felt like he improved towards the end like a lot of our rookies, especially in run blocking. Bohanon - B+: This is based on his position and the fact that he was a 7th round pick. Personally I didn't expect him to do anything at all, like at all, and while 130 all purpose yards isn't exactly earth shattering it's about 120 yards more than I expected so on that basis I think he is above average while not quite excellent (which would be the A range). How often does a FB get a 20 yard reception? To grade the draft overall I would probably give it a C+ or even B-. A lot of guys had average seasons, a few didn't play much or at all but also managed to get what is likely the DROY and a 7th round pick who could contribute something. Furthermore the class all seemed to be improving as the year went on which could bode well for next year and into the future.
Some grades with a 'slash' to show progression or drop off (if any) 1a. Dee Milliner: D-/C Milliner was a tentitive, slow to react Wooden Indian. Mr. "8 yard cushion" showed improvement in the last month but let's not forget the lousy TD he gave up even last Sunday vs. Miami by allowing inside position on a blitz package with no inside safety help. Physically, his length and closing speed may push his grade up big-time in '14 turning the overall 2013 draft into an overall success. 1b. Sheldon Richardson: A- Solid against the run (A), but A-minus because his pass rush was meh. Played all 16 games. Many thought his selection was a head-scratcher in a predominantly 3-4 defense. Helluva pick. 2. Geno Smith: D-/D Alternately shaky and brutal start. Atlanta (and NE-2nd to a lesser extent) turned out to be a tease and he regressed to the point where they shut down the QB position during a stretch that impacted on their playoff chances. Eventually showed improved ball security, however, when the coaches are lauding a young QB for running more, I read that as something that gives pause: either they don't trust his 'reading' or 'decision-making' in the passing game. 3. Brian Winter: D/C- Seeing him up close in Cortland, the guy is 'meh' unimpressively from a physical standpoint. While he did log a lot of snaps for a 3rd rounder, this guy imho will be a career JAG. 4. Trade for Chris Ivory: B-/B Ivory seemed like his hamstring was going to keep him on the sidelines pedaling for a 1,000 yds. on a bike the way he had to be treated with kit gloves from traing camp on. Came on and turned out to be on the field long enough to rack up 800+ yards. Good, hard-nosed runner. Successful trade. 5. Oday Aboushi: incomplete/A+ "Incomplete and an A+" grade? Aboushi was sushi on the field as far as his play went working with the awful OL "2's" in pre-season. However, the hysteria he generated ("the Jets must cut ties with him immediately!") from both uncredible hack writers and a few hysterical, reactionary TGG'ers served to promote a trainwreck marriage between ethnocentric bigotry and religious zealotry.....and the back-and-forth flamming was fun to read! 6. William Campbell: incomplete This guy as everyone knows is a DL converted to OL project. What may not be known is that this back-and-forth conversion went on at Michigan. Rich Rodriguez moved him from DL to OL. When Brady Hoke replaced Rodriguez, Williams approached him and asked to be put back on defense. Nice for a 6th rounder to make an NFL roster but inside the young man, is this a digruntled, frustrated "DL-wannabe" sitting on the bench? 7. Tommy Bohanon: C- Better yield as a rookie than fellow 7th-rounder Antonio Allen. Suitable replacement for the injured Lex Hilliard.
Wow, that's a lot of current (and future) starters from one draft. Perhaps out of necessity this year, but it will be because of talent in the next couple. I think Rex was right. http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/sto...n-coach-new-york-jets-says-team-draft-winners Only time will tell, but I'm very excited about the future of this draft class.
