This is Sanchez in a nutshell. Like AK in poker; like Anna Kurnikova in tennis: looks pretty, but does nothing except screwing you over.
Sanchez is #2 or #3 on the depth chart now. He wants to start, he has to earn it. Yesterday, if the Jets don't make the switch to McElroy, they lose the game.
I didn't bother reading any of the posts in this thread, but the answer is yes. We should've pulled the plug after last season, or at very worst during the bye week this year. Sanchez just isn't good. No amount of hoping he turns it around will change that. Sanchez has all the physical tools, but that doesn't mean anything. JaMarcus Russell had all the physical tools, too. There is one thing you can't do in the NFL if you're going to be a successful quarterback, and that is turn the ball over. If you're an elite quarterback, you put up prolific numbers while protecting the ball. If you're a middle of the pack quarterback, you put up prolific numbers while turning it over excessively, or put up average numbers while protecting the ball. If you're a bad quarterback, you do not accumulate prolific numbers or protect the football. Sanchez will never be a prolific passer because he is not accurate enough. He can't hit a high enough percentage of his passes to put up high yards per attempt totals. More importantly, his decision making is what does him in. He leaves too many potential big plays on the field, and he commits mind-bogglingly bad turnovers. It's been four years, and he looks less poised than McElroy, who is a 7th round draft pick and just took his first NFL snap in the midst of his first game of the season on the active roster. The guy doesn't have it mentally, and there's not a great track record of guys putting it all together after four years of failure. He has the physical ability, but he can't take advantage of it. That's not going to change.
They already have. And it's like Adam Schein said last night, this is lighting a spark under everyone else who may have turned complacent. If Rex isn't afraid to bench El Guappo, no one else feels safe from being benched either. So you see the blocking improve immediately and the run improve immediately, and so on. To go back now means everyone can relax again. No way does Rex start El Guappo this week.
that's it in a nutshell for me. This team was "supposed" to be good defensively with a good running game. now that hasn't particularly panned out, however they just need efficient QB play with limited turnovers...that's where Sanchez has failed miserably. I can live with some missed throws and taking sacks here and there..but the dopey turnovers throughout the season in the red zone, and overall lack of protecting the ball is where he has regressed immensely, and that has translated directly to a few of their losses this season. They just need a game manager, especially given their remaining schedule. see if McElroy can handle it so you know maybe he can be a #2 next year. bottom line, we need a new QB next season regardless, Sachez is done.
I don't get it... If Jets need a game manager & McElroy is it, why would he be #2 and we need a new QB? If McElroy shows promice, why isn't he #1?
After sleeping on it, I think yesterday was a mercy benching, and Sanchez is starting next week. Sanchez now knows he can be benched now.
because you can't assume he's starting Qb caliber unless he plays absolutely lights out...and because our defense and running game are nowhere close to what they were expected to be. so while a game manager is enough to get us through the rest of the year, it's not enough for a long term solution. Again, to me if he's good enough to compete for #1 next year i'm good with that, my point is Sanchez needs to be gone and they need to look at avaialble Qb's. you can't hang everything on a 7th round pick. Whoever loses out in SF is the first place to look.
I'd argue just the opposite. Keeping Sanchez in helps other teams realize all of his flaws and they keep coming out. Sanchez has a 50cent arm and a 2 cent head, when you get change back from your dollar you're not worth a damn to any team. I saw one of Shotty's old colored playbook charts for sale on Ebay (you know the one.. pass plays for dummy QB's). Lets bid for it collectively and turn it over to Sporano. Maybe if Dumbchez only has to look in one direction on one side of the field he might be able to pick out the open receiver. Nah, that would still require him making an informed choice. Sanchez just likes to throw it where the greatest crowds gather, he knows the ball is lonely and wants a group hug. ; )
Wow... wait a second. This whole conversation is based on your "...if McElroy can handle it [being game manager] so you know maybe he can be a #2 next year..." So now your qualification for starting QB is changing from "being game manager" to playing "absolutely lights out". If he can be game manager, he can be starting QB, there is no need to be "light out" to qualify for the spot.
Another reason why benching Sanchez was beautiful. This the first win since maybe the Colts game I felt really good about. I feel as though we have a slightly more legitimate chance to go on a run and make something happen. I also feel as though this switch has brought some hope back into the fanbase. I truly want Rex Ryan to ride the GMac train for the rest of the season.
El Guappo shouldn't ever return to the starting lineup, IMO. You make a decision - you cut and run. Period. Rex is bullshitting for PR reasons, and appeasing El Guappo for humanitarian reasons as well. This guy had many chances... way too many, IMO. Now you go with your other two options. I could live with McElroy for 4 more games until we see what he's made of. Put Tebow in sporadically and see what happens. Freeing oneself from the "Sanchez Shackles" allows the team to let it rip now and see who we want to insert on a game-by-game basis. Let the best man compete and win.
not sure why your arguing with me, my point is pretty clear. reading comprehension is an essential skill here ; ). Let me make it more simple for you to follow, my points are: 1) They need to let Mcelroy start the remainder of the season. 2) They need to somehow find a way to get rid of Sanchez next season (not that easy to do). 3) They need to look for another option for a number 1 QB next year (if they can somehow mamge #2 above). If you want me to clarify further I'll say if McElroy proves he's a capable starting QB there should be an open competition for the starting spot........but they cannot hang their hopes on McElroy being the future starter even if he plays well against the likes of the remaining competition......unless like I said he plays waaay above, and I mean waaay above expectations. My personal opinion is that Gmac is a solid 2. My opinion is also that Sanchez will start Sunday anyway rendering this discussion meaningless.
I've been a Sanchez supporter and I still think the guy has the talent to salvage his career. That being said, he looked like a beaten man on Sunday, a guy who was ready to wave the white flag. I think he definitely needs a break, and G-Mac is the guy to get the start against the Jags.
I'm a sunshiner, and I can honestly say that I believe that we are fucked. Sanchez sucks and will never be able to lead us to anything. Tebow sucks. McElroy sucks (29 yds passing and some are anointing him our savior - LOL). We will be lucky if one of these turds can be an effective game manager and not make bonehead plays. Well that sure sets the bar high! We have no running game. If McElroy starts, teams will stack the line to stop the run and force McElroy to show off his pea shooter. Who's he going to throw to? We have very little talent at WR. Keller is hurt and unlikely to be re-signed given our cap trouble. There are major holes on the OLine. Simply put, we have no playmakers - none. We need to start over a build through the draft and accept that we will suck for 3 years. Stop signing over the hill FAs as stopgaps to help salvage mediocre records that keep us from high draft picks. Embrace the suck people!
I also think this is the case. Again, I think Sanchez has the raw talent to salvage his career, and I hope that he does, but the best thing for him would be to sit and watch a successful, veteran quarterback for a year or two...or three. I seriously doubt he's ever gonna find "it" while being on the field for the Jets.
