In most cases I don't think it's wise to make moves for the right now, but sometimes a team needs to dare to be great... right now the Jets are in a rare position where trading for an elite WR would be daring to be great. The reason I'd prefer Marshall or Crabtree as opposed to Boldin is because of their young age and the fact that a move like that would essentially be building for now and the future. Sanchez needs a threat to throw to, and someone like Marshall or Crabtree would be great to fill that role. You might argue that spending money on a threat at WR sends the wrong message, but I think that's extremely short sighted. Trading for / signing a top flight receiver sends a signal that the Jets actually are hardcore intent on winning. Second, Leon's contract issue has a lot to do with his agent, if you look at Andre Smith as an example of how this guy is incapable of getting deals done. There's an article floating around the board about Keels that doesn't speak very highly of him. From a contract perspective, I believe you seriously underestimate how good Tannenbaum is when it comes to balancing the cap out on a year to year basis. The Jets have been able to do just about anything they've wanted and still stay significantly under the cap. If Tannenbaum thinks there's a way to get an elite WR and stay healthy financially, I have no doubt he'll get it done. Like I responded to Abdul Salam, I completely understand the arguments against Marshall because of his off the field issues, that's a completely logical and reasonable argument. It still doesn't change the fact that the Jets need a wide receiver and if the Jets can get one at a good price, they should jump on it. I wouldn't trade a 1st and a 4th for Marshall as being reported would be required on ESPN. The Patriots got Randy Moss for a 4th, the Jets need to be able to pull something similar off. It'll be almost impossible to get another Randy Moss for a 4th, but they need to find something that makes it completely reasonable on our part.
Disagree on Keyshawn- probably one of the best possession receivers this team has ever seen. When he went over the middle never once did you worry about him not holding onto the ball when he took a hit.
XX I agree w/you that it would be great if the Jets could upgrade at WR through a trade. I also agree w/you that B Marshall is a gifted WR and that this is up to Tannenbaum to perform the due dilligence as to what Brandon has done to ensure that he will not hurt women, embarrass himself and the NFL any more. Maybe he has changed. But he has to demonstrate that. I would not be inclined to give up a 1st rd pick for Brandon based on his off the field issues. Plax is going away for 2 yrs for his behavior/stupidity. I see Brandon on the same path unfortunately. But he can change, he can grow up, I look at Randy Moss as the kind of guy that needed to grow up and he apparently has. But again, I don't think Randy was into beating up girls, I think he mainly liked to smoke weed and drive like an idiot.
Agree to disagree, however, I will agree with you if they don't overpay. A first pick next year would be a large contract as it is (probably on a WR - obviously unproven), so that and a 4th, preferebly 5th or 6th, doesn't bother me. If they can sign him for somewhere around 5yr incentive based contract maxed at 30mil, 10mil guaranteed I'd agree, as oppose to Roddy's 5yr 50mil, 19mil guaranteed. He does not deserve that size contract.
A #1 receiver could probably account for 1-3 more wins this year. Obviously I can't prove that but it seems pretty plausible.
Which in turn makes the draft pick we sent for him into a lower pick in the draft, thus a less valuable one... making the trade a better one for the Jets.
Honestly, I just want someone who knows how to run routes, get open, and will have sure hands so that Sanchez can have another outlet when in trouble. As long as we don't sign Matt Jones, I guess I'll be ok (depending on what we give up). I still look back and wish we could have gotten Holt. He isn't what he used to be, but he is dependable.
Was anyone else having flashes of Chad in their heads yesterday, seeing all of the check-down receiver passes?
Leon will get locked up, I think it happens before the season starts. That goes back to 1993 so it's alot more than 10.
We have done better than 50% since 1993. The only busts we had was probably Robertson. Even a bad pick like Kyle Brady worke dout somewhat as he was a great blocking TE(like Becht). I didn't even mention Hugh Douglas who was another really good pick. We have drafted very well in rd 1 for a while now w/ the exception of probably Gholston if he doesn't get it going.
Still strikes me as a 50/50, especially when you consider that some of those guys, like Farrior, didn't turn it on until later in their stint with the team. Also, while Brady and Becht were great blocking TE's, is it possible to justify a first round pick, and argue that it was well spent, when they can't catch the ball and pose zero threat? I thought that the notion was either all-around or receiving TE's can go in the first, but that blocking TE's/extra linemen, are more often than not taken in the mid to late rounds. I'm still calling an even split.
personally, I don't think getting Marshall would be a good move (because he is a head case) but that is the type of guy teams want to dump. I think we will be better off with what we got either that or get a player that gets cut. It looks like Tyree may be availible, I think he could replace Brad Smith and also contribute on ST.
Maybe if we keep our DP's this next draft, we can get a true impact WR. I cringe everytime Tanny pulls one of his 3 for 1 trades because it only nets us one player at the expense of depth.
When you get solid starters I think that is a good job unless we are talking top 5 or so. We've done better than 50/50.
What about a guy like Marvin Harrison for a year? Don't forget though, Cotchery is the number one WR, but Dustin Keller is the number two... He's just as effective as a WR..
Trading for a Brandon Marshall is not a now move. The guy is 25 and just entering the prime of his career. Trading a first for him is a no brainer, the question becomes how much more then a first do we also have to give up. The chances of finding a legit superstar at the WR position that could come in ready to be the #1 next year is slim at best. I understand he is a headcase, I also underdstand he is a top 5 WR in the game. I think we have enough leadership and high character guys that it is worth the risk to bring in a guy that could take our offense to another level. Still don't see Denver trading him though, unfortunately.
It's about more than just receiving ability... it's about how defenses gameplan for the Jets offense. Right now, teams can easily stack the box since Cotchery doesn't command a double coverage and Keller can be spied by a safety. While Keller being spied by a safety is still a threat to opposing defenses, it's a risk they'd be willing to take because they can apply constant pressure (and they will this season) as well as have 8 guys flying in to stop the running backs. If you add a major threat at WR, then teams suddenly have to shift off the line which opens lanes for the running game, and makes the whole offense in general more dangerous. There would be a tremendous difference adding a number one as opposed to sticking with what we have.
Why not take a shorter view and look Just in Tannys regin as GM. Brick - A very good young LT. Started every game since drafted. Mangold - One of the best centers in the game, also started every game. Revis - Young shut down corner. You can easily make a case for him int the top few in the NFL. Gholston - Looking to have bust written all over him. Has shown no promise again this offseason. Keller - Good rookie season. Has the skills to be a beast as a receiving TE. Sanchez - Hope for the future, possible starter this season. Not a bad haul for a short period of work. 50% of 1st round picks do not live up to thier draft slot. We are hitting way over that in the past few years. I'm torn on Marshall. He's a beast. One of the best yong receivers in the game, but his off feild issues scare me. I'd hate to trade away multiple picks to have him end up in prison like Plaxico. The guys is a nut job.
