That's 10 years worth of picks and the OP was citing 20. I think what you've demonstrated is that first round picks are far from a sure thing, that we're getting about a 50% return thus far.
Marshall, to me, looks like a player who is headed down a path of a Burress. Awesome WR but wants his money and wouldn't think team first...continue to get into to trouble. The team can't afford to pay for what Marshall wants (White contract), we have Leon we need to lock up and Mangold as well. You can't just keep outsourcing to fill holes, it puts a strangle hold on your salary cap. Signing Leon and Mangold are much bigger priorities than upgrading at WR. Can you imagine how we'd alienate Leon if we signed Marshall to a Roddy White type of contract. Give tons of money to a WR with tons of baggage before extending our most explosive player, home grown leader and consumate professional. I'd be shocked and dissapointed in the organization! I agree we could use a major upgrade but not Marshall.
There are many problems with your take on this. First, the CBA expires after this season and the structure of the salary cap is going to change IF they manage to work out a new one, so you really can't plan for it at this point. If a new CBA isn't worked out, then there is no salary cap... at least not until a new deal is agreed on. Second, Marshall was acquitted of any wrong doing in the case with his ex-girlfriend. From what I understand, they basically found the ex-girlfriend to be a gold-digging stalking psycho nut job who had it out for Marshall. I'm not trying to make the case that Marshall doesn't have off the field issues, he clearly has had lots of them... however, he would not have been the first, he doesn't have something imminent over his head right now, and at this point the best thing for him would be a change of scenery... hello New York Jets. Leon and Mangold have to get locked up regardless of what the Jets do at WR. Mangold WILL be locked up, and will probably end up being the highest paid center in the NFL in the process. No matter what each side feels Leon is worth, the Jets won't let him go. He's way too valuable to the organization to just let him walk. The contract negotiations with these players has nothing to do with addressing another position. Tannenbaum has been excellent at negotiating deals and keeping the salary cap balanced. I have no doubt he'll be able to continue to do so.
Their Wide Receivers suk... Enough of this just getting by with marginal nonsense at WR.... They have a rookie QB and he needs to be surrounded by studs, not #4 receivers. Get Marshall already and who cares if it costs a #1 picks, big deal.....
I'm going to re-post this because it bears repeating. The most recent charge (which, as you said, he was acquitted of) is just one in a series of incidents making people question Marshall's character. continued in the next post because I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH SPACE...
In the most recent case it was. I didn't deny the past history. I'm well aware of it. It seems like a trend in the NFL that all the bigtime elite receivers, with the exception of Fitzgerald, are all headcases in some form. What I'm arguing is that a change of scenery for this guy, combined with hopefully a greater maturity and the need that we have at the position could be a very good deal for all sides involved. There's definitely a risk here but I don't see this guy in the same light as say Pacman Jones, who was constantly screwing up no matter how many chances he was given. Even still, I'd be happy even getting someone like Crabtree or Boldin. The point is we need to address the WR position, and Marshall seems as good a fit as any right now. From a football standpoint, he has a lot of Al Toon like qualities.
Fixed Anyone who thinks we HAVE to get a "#1" receiver but giving up even more draft picks just does not understand how championship teams are built.
#1 picks are not used on depth, they're used on impact players. The Jets are built to win a championship right now, and they literally are an elite wide receiver away from being an elite team in the NFL. Depth is developed from the later rounds, undrafted rookies, and journeyman free agents. If you think Tannenbaum's drafting has been anything less than great, then I'd argue you don't understand how to build a championship team. An elite wide receiver would make a tremendous difference on this team not only right now, but for years to come. If you disagree, look at the difference on the Giants when Eli had and doesn't have Plaxiglass.
As I said many posts back, if we don't then it won't be for a lack of trying. Every move they have made for the last two years was to win now. We can't without a #1 receiver.
I believe in the idea of second chances and sometimes with changes of scenery... but most times when it happens, it's a case of the player being humbled to some respect. Brandon Marshall is sitting out and demanding a trade because he saw his QB do it and get away with it. I don't see anything that would humble him in this situation. He'd come out of it feeling like he won. And then he'd be dealing with the cops in Jersey instead of the ones in Denver.
If that's actually the case then I'd agree with you, but there's no way to actually know that. Either way, I trust Tannenbaum to do his homework. If there's something flagrantly wrong with Marshall that Tannenbaum is privy too, I doubt he makes the deal. Almost all of Tannenbaum's trades have worked out for us so far.
Marvin Jones- Aaron Glenn- Keyshawn-absolute scrub won us nothing, never was worth a 1 overall. Farrior(though he didn't blossom until his last year w/ us)-didn't do anything for the jets and they let him walk and turn into one of the best LB in the league. Chad-love him, but i think we all know what everyone in the world thinks about him. Abe-yeah he was worth it everytime they got to the playoffs. Ellis Becht-???? is that a joke? Moss-he was good until the jets layed an egg on coles then had to trade away moss for coles...didn't turn out so great. Vilma-another guy who turned out great for the jets led the team in tackles then changed systems and looked like Gholston. Brick-remains to be seen, worth the 4th overall? Mangold-great Revis- the best Of all those guys 4 are still on the jets and 3 of the 4 are still in their rookie contracts. That must say something, lets not be delusional.
Yeah, I find this disturbing also. This is a Plaxico Burress waiting to happen. Um..... get him if we can, but let's not mortgage the farm.
Name the other WRs that are well known for beating the crap out of women. Frankly I don't really give a shit if the girl is a gold digger as you called her - Brandon Marshall is 6'4" 235lb - Do you really think its okay that he conducts himself by routinely getting into domestic violence scenarios with women? If the woman is a gold digger does that mean that she deserves to get physically attacked and threatened by Brandon Marshall? I see no reason for your optimism. He has beaten women in Florida, Georgia and Colorado. What makes you think that he won't beat women in New York and New Jersey? I think the guy is inevitably going to get locked up and thrown in jail. He seems to me to be just as much of a screw up as pacman. Good Fit???? He's a walking liability. The guy cannot stay out of trouble and cannot stop beating up women. He has mental / emotional problems. It doesn't matter if he can catch a football and run down the field because he is 1 click away from being locked up and/or getting seriously injured as a result of his off the field criminality. Unlike Marshall - Al Toon is a gentleman. he is married to the mother of his 4 lovely kids and he is a successful business owner who is a member of several boards of directors including the packers board of directors. Al Toon never hit women. Marshall would have a lot to learn from an Al Toon.
Everything you just wrote was at the complete optimistic side of the spectrum. As a GM, everything can't be now now now, they have to look at the big picture. For giving someone $50mil, give me more than, if everything happens perfectly, the signing will be worth it. Exactly what you said, no one knows whats going to happen with a new CBA so it isn't the wisest thing to start flinging money everywhere when you don't know how/if the future will restrict you as an organization. Yes, Marshall was acquitted of the charge, but still has been charged numerous times, guilty or not, he's making poor decisions to put himself in these positions. Injury last offseason, another poor decision. Your argument that he is not the first, is irrelevant, and even if you do look at it, the track record for players that have had off-field issues isn't very promising. That would support my argument. Reference you saying 'the best thing for him', it's about the best thing for the JETS, not him. You are not understanding my point that it will be difficult to sign Leon to a monster contract and Mangold to, as you say, biggest C contract in the league and still pay 50mil to Marshall. The only way would be if A. there were no CBA next year, which I believe will not be the case, or B. We trim a lot of fat from our current salaries. Who do you trim, Faneca? D'Brick? Moore (not a huge hit but still valuable)? Woody? Sanchez? Pace? Jenkins? Ellis? Revis? Rhodes? Scott? Gholston? So add Mangold and Leon to this list to players with major contracts, not to mention Harris will want a new contract next year. If you keep all of these players, assuming they cut Thomas, Jones, you still have to cut a few more medium starting/major role contracts. This equals weaker talent starting and weaker depth. Marshall's handling of the Bronco situation is not inspiring either. Not worth it for Marshall in my opinion....unless, there is no CBA, not only next year, but for about 3 yrs when a lot of these contracts will expire. Not to mention my point that if Marshall signs and Tanny continues to be stingy with Leon, and it drags out, that sends the wrong message to the entire team - won't pay up for home grown playmakers but hands over the bank to an unknown player with baggage. Just my opinion. We don't want to turn into the Redskins!
As I said earlier, I trust Tannenbaum to do his homework and find out if Marshall has or hasn't changed. If he's going to come here, beat women, get arrested, and be a general piece of shit, then no I don't want him. However, if Marshall has actually gotten away from that, then from a football perspective, I want this guy on the Jets. I completely understand your reservations because of his off the field issues, and my desire for him to come to the Jets has more to do with the Jets need for WR than him in particular. Again, as I said earlier, I'd be happy with Crabtree, Boldin, or any other elite WR we can get our hands on. The greater argument I'm making is we need a WR. I completely respect the reasons you don't want Marshall for.
As bad as he is Denver sure loves him and don't want to part with him for anything short of a big haul.
