It was my understanding his cap number this year was 4.4 millon with a base of 2.8 millon. Meaning cutting him saved 1.6 millon( 4.4 - 2.8 = 1.6). I Apoligize if my math is wrong. But regardless the cap savings of cutting him is a nominal amount.
I will stand by my previous statement that Mawae was cut because he was the one who threw Pennington under the bus, along with Fabini. The organization doesn't want anything of that sort going on anymore. It was an out with the old guard move. -X-
The more I think about this, the more I believe it. We kept Pete Kendall, who though he improved at the position last year, isn't even in the same league with Mawae at center. I doubt it had much to do with money. I do agree that the FO couldn't exactly let him say he wouldn't restructure and keep him, especially since by that point, a large number of starters had already renegotiated.
$1.1 million? We couldn't afford that? I think the reason for Mawae getting cut was not the cap money, but his age and direction the team wants to go under Mangini. We definitely had the money, but I don't think we would have gotten a 3rd rounder for him.
