I have an extended baton at home. The United States Marine Corps trains with them. I have a home security system. Cameras. If anyone comes into my home, I will be aware. Once I stun the person trying to break into my house - cuff the sucker outside and call the police.

If I lose that day, well then shit I guess it wasn't in the cards - that fear won't make me buy a gun though. I live in a decent area and I see where you are coming from, but I think there's always a way to protect yourself in your own home.

Texas, other states are a different story, everyones' got a gun in those states it seems.

I don't want to steer this thread off course - but since it involves race: legend has it Cobb was a vicious racist. However in a new biography, “Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty,” author Charles Leerhsen claims the many accusations against him were not true, that Cobb had many black friends growing up and after becoming a millionaire (invested in Coca-Cola in its infancy) he employed many blacks one of whom, Arthur Rivers, named his son after Cobb and said of him: "I love the man." Cobb also referred to Willie Mays as "the only player I'd pay to see."

I can understand that there are some places that are so violent and dangerous that having a gun would be a reasonable way to protect yourself. I also think you'd have to be a complete asshole to live in such a place if you had any other realistic option.

I can also understand that some people live in such remote places that they are uniquely vulnerable in the microscopically unlikely event that someone wanders by to do them harm. Those people are probably justified in believing a gun is an appropriate tool for self defense.

The vast majority of Americans need guns for protection like they need, well, a hole in their head.

The church in Charleston is having a prayer meeting tonight. Kind of like the one they held last week when they opened their arms to a stranger who ended up killing 9 of them. Well, as much as I despise guns and would love to see a complete makeover in our laws on registration, sales, etc. I hope and pray that tonight they have security in the church. Armed security.

The problem with this situation is that there are valid and reasonable positions for both sides, but we have been so well trained by our rulers to believe these arguments are political, our identities are tied to our politics, and anyone who has a different perspective must be our enemy and we must dismiss and dispute their positions even in the face of reason.

This is truly a situation where there is no right or wrong, but the rulers want us fighting each other instead of uniting against them.

According to the media the police are a dangerous threat. Police are armed. Clearly it creates a significant imbalance of power if the people cannot arm themselves to protect themselves from the police menace.

So are you suggesting having open warfare with the cops.

Having guns doesn't equate to conducting open warfare. But if the police are such a dangerous menace, and are armed, what is the argument in having citizens armed to protect themselves from the police?

Every conflict could end with someone shooting someone else. Get rid of all guns, police in the UK don't carry firearms; no one really has them there. People are abusing the privilege of having guns. We need to take that privilege away IMO.

It's not a privilege, it's a right. You'll never get rid of all the guns. Never.

Wait until they can be 3d printed by normal people.

2nd amendment needs to change, the amount of killings in this country is just too much. As a progressive country, it needs to be updated.

People in the UK are victims of violent crime more often than the US too.

I'm curious what about our country constitutes it being a progressive country?

Yeah, other means of attack is used - violence will never go away, but gun deaths as a whole would take a huge dip, which is what I want. Too many people in this country have guns, a lot of people aren't responsible and shouldn't have one to begin with.

taxes, technology [having patients enter data on mobile devices; information that is sent to doctors to see adverse events instantly], politics, having a minority as a president, social networks. More people are voting now, then ever before. We are making movements to fight government corruption.

Sorry. Not accepting a greater chance of my wife & mother being raped, my family or myself being assaulted because it makes you feel more progressive.

go move to the UK if you prefer being raped.

Most of the gun deaths (non-suicide) are fucking gang bangers in inner cities killing each other. You know - those black lives that don't cause a media uproar? They can go fuck themselves ... or kill themselves, I don't care.
