We don't have the tax dollars that would be required to protect every possible place with an armed police officer. I believe every US citizen should be required to take a firearm training and safety class once they turn 18.

We don't have the tax dollars to try and have a "war on guns" either. It would never work anyway.

Protect yourselves and your family. Train yourself and your family on firearms and firearm safety. Get your concealed permit and carry. Encourage other sane people you know to do the same. These things will stop happening the moment these cowards have to actually fear that normal Americans also have a gun on them.

how feasible is it to manufacture bio-metric readers on all guns going forward which will only enable the registered user to operate the weapon?

what about a failure mechanism on all guns not used for law enforcement or military use?

the military or law enforcement can somehow turn off guns within a 500 yard radius with some wireless transmitter they have and turn off a receiver on the gun being used incorrectly nearby

I was in Portugal over the summer and the police in Lagos didn't even carry guns. I guess that means there are no criminals in Portugal? It's such a stupid argument that we can't do it.

    Somewhat related..

Another teenager killed by an old white guy who "thought" he saw a gun

Yes, the answer is put more guns in the hands of people who have no business owning one.

This kids mom was a good person with guns. In the sense that she acquired them legally, apparently.

The flaw in this logic is so daunting its tempting not to bother responding. You can severely limit the number of bad people with guns if you limit the amount of guns available in general. Nobody needed the 223 this kids mom had. Least of all a kindergarten teacher in an affluent suburb with a mentally disturbed young adult in the house. You really think more guns is the answer to this problem?

I wasn't implying to add more police officers to cities and towns but instead I'll take my chances with a bad guy having a gun. Las Vegas has quite a high crime rate so it's not like I live in Mayberry. A "war on guns" isn't the answer but we have the means to hold these companies who manufacture weapons designed to kill large groups of people liable. You can start by having uniform policy in how somebody can obtain a firearm.

I have to be honest, I more fear the coward who has nothing to lose by running into a grocery store or casino and shooting a bunch of people then himself then some criminal who is going to rob me in broad daylight.

Something else to think about and how it is a societal issue is people always want to bring up the fact that gun crimes in Europe and East Asia are astronomically lower then here in states. From my observations from traveling around the world is that most of these westernized nations do not have the gross disparity in classes like we do in the States. Germany has one of the smallest gaps between rich and poor and essentially very little gun violence yet we have one of the largest and ungodly amounts of gun violence.

He didn't fear that other might have guns and that would not have stopped him. Most of these mass shooters kill themselves and commit these acts as a precursor to their own suicides. Arming the public or the principal would not stop these events. The shooter would just take out the armed adult first. They go on these rampages expecting to die.

It's not an economic issue, it is a social one. We have gun violence and an absurd amount of gun deaths in this country because we have 300,000,000 guns and you can buy one at the drop of a hat.

I honestly don't think they'd have the balls to try. I understand they're suicidal, but they're going into it thinking no one is going to even have a chance to stop them before they do what they want to do.

I also don't think the type of gun matters too much other than having fewer victims. Their is still an awful massacre that happened, just fewer victims.

How many armed adults could have potentially stopped this psycho before it came down to what it did?

And this psycho didn't buy the guns.

If that principal and other staffers had guns, I highly doubt we're talking about a bunch of innocent kids being mowed down. And while I don't think they type of gun matters all that much, I do agree that their's no need for this type of gun to be highly available to a normal citizen.

From now on the TSA, instead of making everyone line up, take off their shoes and xray their luggage, should just issue all airline passengers box cutters. If everyone on Flight 11 had a box cutter, I don't think Mohommed Atta gets anywhere near the cockpit.

Right, but this wasn't a "bad guy" capping guys crossing their turf this was a young adult with autism and a personality disorder gaining access to semi-automatic weapons because his mom liked to collect guns and shoot cans off the fence. There is no reason this woman should've had a .223 rifle lying around the house. Stupid. Go to a shooting range, rent a gat, and get your fix.

From now on when everyone exits their homes we should make them take off their shoes, go through an xray machine and pat them down to make sure they don't have any guns. We will also need to have a similar process for any building with a door in case someone managed to obtain a gun somehow after leaving their home.

    That should do the trick.

The latter is more expensive for the government than the former.

Do you realize how ridiculous your argument is? Do that and you have mentally unstable adults walking around with guns. Who's to say whether an armed staffer becomes unstable and opens fire on the kids??????? In this day and age with road rage and all other stressors and social media where insults fly all day, you want a fully armed citizenry??? That is insane.

The solution is less guns, not more. Unbelievable.

So if Lanza's mother does not have guns, 20 6-7 year old children would be alive and in their parents' arms and homes today. Instead, to protect gun freak Nancy Lanza's right to own semi automatic rifles and pistols to satisfy her need to go target shooting or whatever other reason she thought she needed military type weapons, 26 innocent people are dead. How can anyone be pro-life, rational, and agains any gun safety and control legislation. This is now a public safety issue.

If this is not the tipping point for gun safety and control measures in this country, I don't know what is.

Even without taking the argument forward (assuming gun control against a law-abiding Nancy Lanza who, as far as we know, rightfully and legally obtained her weapons), gun control reduced Lanza's number of guns by 1.
