While I agree that next years draft is deep at edge rusher, our primary concern needs to be Guard/Tackle. I know we need an edge rusher and we have for a decade plus, but more importantly we need to make sure Darnold is protected for the next 10 years. Not the sexy first round pick, but the right one. We can't keep neglecting this offensive line. Leonard and Nathan can hold down the fort for a couple of years.

I think if the tackles hold up this season , edge will be the priority with the first pick. Guard is our biggest need on the O line. Carpenter has not played well in zone blocking schemes in the past. Zack Martin from Dallas should be a priority in free agency. The cowboys won't be able to keep both him and DeMarcus Lawrence. Beachum should have a couple more seasons left in the tank but his replacement should be drafted sooner than later.
This D needs to create turnovers and the occasional defensive TD.
A very sad stat : the Jets haven't scored a defensive TD since Oct. 20, 2013, when Antonio Allen returned an interception for a touchdown against Tom Brady. It's been a league-high 73 games without a defensive touchdown since.

Wow I didn't know it had been that long without a defensive TD. No way Dallas lets Zack Martin anywhere near that door. I would let DeMarcus Lawrence walk way before letting Zack Martin go. Their main focus has to be keeping Zeke rushing for 1500+ and keeping Dak upright. You don't let guys like that walk away. Lets see how Winters and Carpenter play this year. I have hopes for Winters and with him being injured all last season, I want to see how he plays at 100%. We will have to see how Carpenter adjusts to the new schemes. We need a franchise LT for Darnold. The dudes we have on the outside are like turnstiles.

Weather they let Martin walk will depend on what they see in Connor Williams. They are looking to the future and can't keep both. Next year's FA class is going to be much better than it appears right now. Several teams, Vikes,Rams,Jags are going to have to release some top tier guys to get under the cap.
One of those turnstiles , Beachum the LT is by far the best player on the Jets O line.
With Winter's healthy, Johnson being replaced by Long and the switch to zone blocking. I think the o line will be much improved. They ranked 3rd last year in the when league running the outside zone concept , unfortunately, Morton refused to stick with anything that was successful.

If Ray plays to his potential he is worth a 6 to have first shot at signing him long term and would make us a contender next year. Which is what we are gearing towards. That would give us 4 years with darnold on the cheap and a legit pass rusher. I’d take that over hoping we are in position to draft someone next year.
This is really a no brainer if he is indeed available

That's a big if. He has failed to come close to his " potential" thus far in a much better situation with Denver.
First shot? We could theoretically franchise tag him and make him way overpaid. Otherwise we're going to have the same chance to sign him long term as 31 other teams.
Ray is a situational pass rusher at best. He is a liability against the run and almost as bad in coverage. He's undersized for OLB and don't forget he had to undergo 3 wrist surgeries last season.
As far as being in position to draft someone next year, we will be in position to draft a quality Tackle, Guard or OLB. Ray does not make this team a contender in any way.

We would have a large window of exclusive negotiations before any team could even talk to him, that’s before we would have to decide on a tag. That’s first shot.
As to his production thus far, let’s be real, if had been balling we wouldn’t be discussing this.these are the kind of chances you take when you are trying to fill the major holes. You can’t just wait till next years first round pick for everything . We are missing a 2nd next year so we won’t get many chances at top end talent, we have the cap space and Mac likes to dance around in the bottom rounds anyway, it’s likely he gets that pick back somewhere along the line.
I don’t see why we wouldn’t do this

I would be all for it if he agreed to a resonable contract extension, sign and trade type deal.
I get we have money to spend but it has to be spent on quality players. Throwing $50 million at a guy like Ray, which is what I was arguing against makes no sense, especially giving up collateral to do so.
I'm not high on Ray. If he can't Excell opposite Von Miller , I don't see him making strides here.

    1. Where is the incentive for either side to want to do a long term deal now? Ray won’t want to do anything in fear of leaving money on the table and Mac wouldn’t want to in fear of being stuck with a player not worth keeping.
    2. Where did this 50m number come from? Is this just a big number you came up with to make it look like a bad idea to trade for him or is there a basis for it?
Not being a smart ass, real questions

I would love Fowler. My 1st born niece Angel had a baby with Fowler's younger brother. My 1st great-niece. My family has been friends with the Fowler's for many of years now. Goes to the Jets? I'll have a lifetime supply of FREE GAME TICKETS and will catch a plane every Sunday to see us live and in action. Please GOD make Fowler a Jet.

The $$50 million came from Jay Bizniss. That was what I was opposed to. Then it increased to pay him what ever he wants next year if he works out. I do not see Ray garnering a $50 million dollar deal based on his performance to date and I certainly don't see him as a blank check talent as Jay Bizniss suggest. By the way, if you read back, I asked him the same question about how he came to the $50 million figure...

Ok, when I respond to quotes posts sometimes I miss other parts of the conversation.
My position doesn’t change here. Ray is worth a 6th rounder for a 1 year tryout and see where it goes from there

Why waste a 6th rounder for a guy that will stay here a year then leave?

    Two questions.

    Will WE want him back?

    Will HE want to stay?

    1. If he played well enough
    2. Why wouldn’t he?

We don’t know, just as we don’t know what we could get with a 6th rd pick.
Why wouldn’t he? we have ample cap space and if ya was having success what would be his motivation for leaving?
This would be the best usage of a late round pick in an attempt to fill a crucial need.

Ok - I snooped around a little bit.

Indeed he looks and sounds like a nice kid. I wouldn't mind him - now, will the Jets pull the trigger on him?

I liked Ray coming out. Not that that means anything lol.

But, it looked like Ray was on his way by his second year, and then got derailed last year. I think he was injured but I'm not sure. I wonder what the circumstances were for Denver being willing to move on from him... because of injury or something else?

Martin gets the nod across from Jenkins but doesn't appear to be a sack guy at all. I don't expect much from Bishop, but maybe they have hope that Donahue and/or Mauldin can accomplish what Ray could as a specialist? But have my doubts there as well.

    Edit: I found this http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/23385014/denver-broncos-not-pick-2019-option-lb-shane-ray

Three wrist surgeries and Bradley Chubb would change things for him. But the '16 Ray could help. Not that it will ever happen.
