Seen this movie before... Safety

  1. This could be more about a new coachong staff w a very different system than it is about playing ability. Thats not to say Maye cant play in a cover 3/seattle type D just maybe not the perfect fit.

Also Saleh could have a specific FA from San Fran in mind who can “QB” the back end through the transition.

I hope it's just Joe Douglas being a good GM, looking out for the whole team, cap, looking ahead, etc. It's still early in the process.

But I agree with others on here who pointed out Maye is older and is probably looking at his one and only shot at cashing in. After losing Jamal and Robbie Anderson, JD may open the purse strings a bit further than normal, but probably not as far as Maye would like.

I'm willing to let it play out. I think Maye has until March 17 to sign the tag, then the team has until June or July to sign a long term deal.

I like Maye and hope it works out.

You franchise tag him so he has to earn his paycheck next season. I would not sign him long-term. It's unfortunate, but that's the NFL. Still, 11 million for one season is not crying poverty so nobody should feel too bad.

On that premise, we should only ever offer 1-year deals then and say earn your next contract.

The man has earned a 3 year deal, at a reasonable wage (for the NFL)

I never said he hasn't earned a long-term deal. I'm talking about his situation. He will be 28, plays safety, and has never made all-pro. There is no reason to lock up someone like that when the franchise tag is available. Let him go out and earn his money next season. If he plays well, he will get a bigger contract the following season. It incentivizes him to play well, rather than just cash checks like we see so many professional athletes do after signing long-term deals.

Sorry, but this is the system that the union agreed to.

Reasonable wage? 11 million for a free safety is not a reasonable wage?

What is concerning is Maye, is one of the few players left from when JD took the job. What concerns me is why would JD take the job if there was no one on the roster he liked? Q Williams who was just traded when JD was hired is about the only player he is keeping. With guys like Adams,Bell, Anderson, Sam, L. Williams,CJ, T Johnson, all of the cast offs playing elsewhere from the o-line. Was it a great team no but there was talent, which is why I think he took the job. He hoped to build on it. Was he wrong about how he evaluated the talent on the team? Maybe, however you can not convince me it has been JDs plan all along to gut this team. If we hit on free agency and on the draft we will have close to the talent/potential in yr three that we had when JD took over. I think JD is getting a lot of shade because of Gase. I hope I am wrong but I think this offseason will expose that JD is over his head.

The Johnsons? Where are you getting that from?

I'd say if Bell and Maye walked into their office together they wouldn't know which was which, how long they were with the team, what position they play, how much they made and how they performed.

The only times either Johnson played even a slightly significant role in player selection was with Tebow and Favre and both were based more on marketing than on-field performance.

STFU? That's his job - it is exactly what he gets paid to do and if it wasn't what his client wanted him to do we would have heard about it by now.

It's also about showing loyalty to a homegrown player. Safeties also don't hit the age down-slope as quickly as other positions like corners, runningbacks and receivers.

You could realistically re-sign him for three years and feel confident that he'll be the starting for the duration without a huge production or ability drop.

Both sides should work to get rid of the franchise tag. It does nothing but create problems for the franchise and player. There's only a couple positions that can feel comfortable playing under it (edge, quarterback) because the money is so absurdly high.

The roster is so devoid of talent that we need veterans like Maye even a couple years from now. Not only is it good for the locker room but it solidifies a position from being a hole for a duration of time and the way he plays the deep third or single high makes the strong safety pretty interchangeable.

People need to relax...We will franchise him if needed, but I assume they’re trying to work on a long or medium term deal. If Maye and his agent are giving unreasonable demands, then we franchise him and re-visit it at a later time.

I’m sure JD is trying to lock him up at a fair deal, but Maye is understandably trying for much more. I doubt JD is low-balling him or doesn’t want to keep him at all. I would have to really question him if that’s the case

You say, you are not saying, he hasn't earned a longer deal but then immediately say again he has to go and earn it. Ok.
You cast a slur like he will drop off once paid, well how will we ever pay one of our own draft picks again in that premise? We should use your judgement in free agency where we have certainly been bitten by certified bag carriers for a long time.
Nice bit of scoffing at the reasonable wage of 11m but what is the tag costing 11m and how is it worked out average of the top 5.
He is already earning 6.5m and will obviously want a a pay rise, he has earned a pay rise, he covered for Adams fantastically and then looking online Spotrac has this...
Maye's current rookie deal is a four-year contract worth a little over $6.5 million, but his Spotrac market value for a new long-term deal carries an average annual value of $13.2 million (projected four years, $53.2 million).

    So scoff away.

Plus there is a thing called loyalty, if you treat your draft picks like shit at contract time your reputation will worsen, especially when a player has earned a deal with his play on the field.

in the old NFL loyalty was a thing. I really don't see it anymore though. outside of that I agree maye deserves to be paid but it's a business. i'd give him 3 years at 11-12 mil a year

I understand but at 28yo a 3 year 11m deal is hardly over the top and would be less than the 49ers gave to Sherman at 29yo, I just think it looks bad on us, especially on the back of Robby last season.

Read what KurttheJetsfan says in his post at the top of the page.

I agree 100% with him. We have a new system where Maye will not be as involved as he was under the previous regime, therefore no need to pay more money to a free safety under this system.

After I had clicked submit on the post I responded to you, I realized I forgot to point this out. This is a huge reason why we will not commit long-term dollars to a free safety in our new defensive scheme. Hello? Wake up. New defense, safeties aren't the focal point like the previous regime.

What about Maye wouldn't fit in the system? He's an excellent center field safety that does not let balls go over his head. He primarily played cover 1 the past couple years (except last year) and the cover 3 only reduces his territory covered and gives flexibility within the defense.

His age is the only concern with a long term deal, not the scheme for.

This goes to where you want to spend your dollars. Under Saleh, the emphasis will be more on getting to the QB and covering the quick underneath routes that kill us and all teams. That is why the dollars will be spent on the D-Line/Edge and probably a really good fast tackling LB. Safeties are only there to provide backup and cover to our CBs where again, more of our money will be spent. No need to pay big money to a safety in this system. He is not a CB, Edge or LB. Therefore he falls down the totem pole in importance. Now, I'm not saying he's unimportant, he is, however, you have to prioritize under this new defensive scheme on where to invest the most money. And that is certainly not a free safety.

Maye has been a solid player for us and seemingly a quiet leader who is respected by his teammates. I would be in favor of something like a 3 year deal around $10-11 million per year. I think that duration would be pretty low risk for us.

In the old NFL player compensation was much lower than it is now. Loyalty has been replaced by $$$ figures as the amount of cash in the till has soared.

The other thing is that players are very different now than they were back in the day. Back in the 60's and 70's players had a long break between seasons, with the SB in January and then nothing much happening until June for vets. This led to players taking some real time off between seasons and then having to work their way back into shape in the summer. Today any player who takes more than a month or two off is at a big disadvantage when things start spinning up again. The job has become a 10+ month a year job with a younger hungrier player waiting to take your job if you slack off and management happy to give them your job because they are much cheaper than you are are.

Curtis Martin was kind of unique in how he approached the job, staying in shape all the time and effectively never taking time off. Tom Brady was in the next generation of players taking that approach. Today everybody who is smart does it and the people who don't drop like flies as the NFL evolves.
