He doesn't have to sign the franchise tender. If Houston and Buffalo worked out a trade he could just come out and say he doesn't want to play for Buffalo so he won't sign the franchise tender with them either. Then the Bills would be fucked so they wouldn't make the trade. Clowney (or his agent really) could also tell teams looking to acquire him that he won't sign the tag unless the team guarantees they won't franchise tag him again in 2020. then sign the tag for 2019 once they agree to that, ensuring that he gets a long term deal either way - after the regular season with them or in free agency. most likely though, the scenario FJF cited is what's gonna happen. Oh my God. The Texans don't have a GM and Clowney doesn't have an agent. It doesn't get better than that. this is an IDEAL, rare chance at getting Clowney's services for cheap

None of that matters if Clowney doesn't want to be a Jet though. The Texans probably aren't taking less than a 2 or 3 (and they can get that because they know he wants to be in Miami) and we would be dumb to give up a 2 or a 3 without a wink wink nod nod deal from Clowney himself.

Judging by the reports that he wants to be in Miami, clearly the market and winning are not his top priorities. Warm weather and no taxes are. The New York market (especially when it's actually NJ) doesn't matter to some people at all.
What makes you think Clowney wants to be in Miami? He has said he doesn't want to play there because they aren't a contender. He wants to play for the Eagles or Seahawks.
Couldn't that be because that's the only team the Texans have given permission to speak with Clowney? Maybe Miami was the first team to contact the Texans and made them a good offer, and that's why the Texans allowed him to speak with the Dolphins.
No Idea, I can only assume he inquired on the asking price. Can't negotiate anything before he signs his tender. But between him saying they are going to explore every option including trade for Edge, multiple times in recent days and him inquiring about Clowney. It's pretty clear,at least in my opinion, that Douglas is looking at the possibility of a trade.
So hows it not true? I didn't go through the whole thing because I did in another post. He cant be signed this year. You'd be trading the picks or players or both for one guaranteed season and then a crap shoot. If I'm a player and cant sign until after the year, unless I fall in love with the Jets I'm going on the open market to start a bidding war. I'm not doing a wink, wink deal, it does nothing for me. Very well could be. I just feel like he wouldn't meet with them if he wasn't serious about playing for them. Who knows though, this situation is pretty unique. I can't remember a scenario like this ever. Bell's comes close but he wasn't going to be traded no matter what whereas with Clowney it seems like he's definitely getting traded.
